His Highness the Aga Khan receives honorary doctorate from the University of Ottawa

Ottawa, Canada, 13/01/2012 - His Highness the Aga Khan was awarded an honorary doctorate from the University of Ottawa for his service to humanity. The degree was confered at a special convocation presided over by Chancellor Huguette Labelle, as well as University President Allan Rock. WE ISMAILIS ARE PROUD OF OUR IMAM! ALLAHUMMA SALLI ALA MUHAMMADIN VA AALE MUHAMMAD! Since Allah had inspired the Prophet (p.) with the science of Quran and the Islamic principles, Muslims considered that the Prophet (p.) is the one who has the knowledge all sciences. They were worried because there was no enough time to learn from his (p.) knowledge. So, he (p.) told them: "I am the city of knowledge, and Ali (as) is its gate and the one who wants to enter this city must pass through its gate." That is due to the fact that Ali (as) lived with the Prophet (p.), learned all his knowledge and was the only companion who was able to answer all questions concerning all issues. He was the authority whom all the companions used to refer to, while he did not have to ask anyone about any issue.

Aga Khan-Who Builds Bridges

The first time I saw His Highness the Aga Khan, he was playing soccer and I was getting ready to play cricket at Harvard. The Aga Khan was a Harvard student in 1957, the year when he became Imam of the Shia Ismaili Muslims. I was enrolled in Harvard's Business School, just across the fence. We shared playing fields and I saw him from a distance but I don't think we ever met at this time. Over the past 20 years, the Aga Khan and I have grown to become close friends. We came into contact first when I was directing the Rockefeller Foundation, and later at the World Bank. The Aga Khan's vision for humanity to help the most marginalized people was very much in line with the work I was doing to alleviate poverty. The Aga Khan has persevered, through his foundation, to promote the well being of, not only his own followers, but also communities at large - from all faiths and all backgrounds, especially in the developing world. In our early years, both of us realized that the differences between rich and poor were not going to continue unaddressed and that people in poverty - who constituted more than half of the world's population - were not going to remain silent. There was also a sense that proactively tackling the issue of poverty and deprivation was a matter of doing what was morally right; for those who were more religiously-inclined, aiding those in need was the result of religious teachings and religious practices. The Aga Khan, as a leader of his faith, is a unique ...

2010 Aga Khan Award for Architecture, Shortlist - The Green School, Indonesia

One of the 19 nominees for the 11th Cycle of The Aga Khan Award for Architecture Location: Badung, Bali, Indonesia (South-East Asia) Architect: PT Bambu Client: Yayasan Kul Kul Completed: 2007 Design: 2006 Site size: 7'542 m² Environmentalists and designers John and Cynthia Hardy wanted to motivate communities to live sustainably. Part of that effort was to show people how to build with sustainable materials, namely bamboo. They established the Green School, and its affiliates: the Meranggi Foundation, which develops plantations of bamboo plants through presenting bamboo seedlings to local rice farmers; and PT Bambu, a for-profit design and construction company that promotes the use of bamboo as a primary building material, in an effort to avoid the further depletion of rainforests. The Green School, a giant laboratory built by PT Bambu, is located on a sustainable campus straddling both sides of the Ayung River in Sibang Kaja, Bali, within a lush jungle with native plants and trees growing alongside sustainable organic gardens. The campus is powered by a number of alternative energy sources, including a bamboo sawdust hot water and cooking system, a hydro-powered vortex generator and solar panels. Campus buildings include classrooms, gym, assembly spaces, faculty housing, offices, cafes and bathrooms. A range of architecturally significant spaces from large multi-storey communal gathering places to much smaller classrooms are a feature of the campus. Local bamboo, grown ...

Aga Khan Planning and Building Service, Pakistan - Ashden Award winner

This video can be downloaded here: www.ashdenawards.org Aga Khan Planning and Building Service, Pakistan won an Ashden Award for Sustainable Energy in 2011. To find out more visit the link above, and follow us on: Facebook bit.ly Twitter twitter.com Blog: www.ashdenawards.org In North Pakistan, winters in the mountains are harsh and natural disasters are part of life. Wide-scale forest destruction causes damage from flooding and disrupts the country's water supply because the region acts as a watershed. Over 14 years ago, the Aga Khan Planning and Building Service (AKPBS) began a concerted drive to make homes in North Pakistan warmer, and reduce the use of wood. Based on the Aga Khan's belief that: "A proper home can bridge that terrible gap between poverty and a better future" the programme is doing just that for over 240000 people. Today over 100 'resource people' work in their own villages promoting energy efficient products. A US$80 package could include floor insulation, an efficient cook stove with a chimney to let smoke out, a water heater, and a roof hatch window that cuts out draughts and lets in light, also fresh air when needed. AKPBS trains local people as artisans and entrepreneurs and has created over 360 new jobs. Over 50000 products have been sold through word of mouth, tours and demonstration homes. Homes are warmer and families save money on fuel-wood and, by ridding their homes of smoke, they avoid respiratory problems too. And local trees and the ...

2010 Aga Khan Award for Architecture, Shortlist - Dowlat II Residential Complex, Iran

One of the 19 nominees for the 11th Cycle of The Aga Khan Award for Architecture Location: Tehran, Iran (Central Asia) Architect: Arsh Design Studio Client: Ali Nazemian Completed: 2007 Design: 2005-2006 Site size: 535 m² This project counters the two-dimensional facade and level open-plan floors of the typical Tehran mid-rise with a building that seeks a three-dimensional approach. The facade—a wooden grid—is punctured with a variety of openings that extend the building's volume beyond the main envelope and allow unpredictable configurations dictated by the preferences of the inhabitants. At the same time, each apartment is split level, allowing the creation of a roof garden that is directly accessible from the top-floor apartment. In addition to being responsive to its users, the building adds a sense of excitement to the public streetscape that it overlooks. The architects see it as a model and as a design strategy that can be adapted to a number of similar sites, to enable the creation of well-designed living spaces that can be modified according to clients' needs, without significant cost premiums and with the use of local materials and technologies. 2010 Aga Khan Award for Architecture, Shortlist - Tulou Collective Housing, China

One of the 19 nominees for the 11th Cycle of The Aga Khan Award for Architecture Location: Nanhai, Guandong, China (Asia) Architect: URBANUS Architecture & Design Inc. / Xiaodu Liu & Yan Meng Client: Shenhzen Vanke Real Estate Co. Ltd. Completed: 2008 Site size: 13'711 m² This pioneering prototype for affordable housing in China is inspired by the traditional tulou, the multi-family, fortress-like earth house found in the rural areas of Fujian province. The urban Tolou consists of an outer circular block with a rectangular box within that is connected to the outer ring by bridges and a courtyard. Both the circular and rectangular blocks contain small apartment units; the spaces in between are for circulation and community use. The lower floors contain shops and other community facilities. Rents are low and apartments are not available to car owners, adding to the homogeneity of the community, many of whom are migrant workers. The self-contained circular form stands in sharp contrast to the typical high-rise blocks around it. The entire structure is wrapped in a concrete screen with wooden inserts that shade the balconies, giving each unit a secondary living space. The position of the apartments also allows for good light and ventilation. Resulting from extensive research into the original earth houses as well as the social dynamics of current urbanisation trends in China, the Tulou Collective Housing is a unique experiment in low-income housing and the transformation of ...
