Live from Ithaca on September 23, 2009 at Castaways, this is Sufjan Stevens playing a brand new song, Age of Adz from his outstanding set. I have this whole set recorded and will post a couple individual songs to youtube. If you want the whole thing, send me a PM and I'll let you know where you can find it. It should be up by this weekend. This is the best quality available of Sufjan's new stuff as far as I've found in both video and audio quality and was shot on my Panasonic Lumix ZS3 / TZ7.

The Age of Adz delivers on all the talk of electronics that built up to it, but the sounds Stevens bring to the table aren't that dynamic or interesting--which is surprising considering how vast Enjoy Your Rabbit was. I like the songs, lyrics, melodies, and orchestrations a lot. The electronic beats and production is really what kills it for me. He is known for his lyrically focused and instrumentally rich songs that often relate to faith and family. He has enjoyed wide critical success in the United States. He is considered part of the folk revival through indie pop, but his influences are very broad, including experimental electronic music, the jazz of Vince Guaraldi, and the academic minimalism of Steve Reich and Philip Glass. Though Stevens had announced plans to make an album for each of the 50 US states, beginning the series with the albums Michigan (2003) and Come On Feel The Illinoise! (2005, officially named Illinois), he has since then retracted the statement. "Sufjan Stevens is not going to write a record for each of the 50 states after all" was the original text included on the online liner notes for their Mews Too: An Asthmatic Kitty Compilation disc released on February 7, 2006.
