Israel Boasts Agricultural Innovations

And in Israel, the agriculture industry is reportedly on the rise. An exhibition held last week in Tel Aviv featured the latest innovations, attracting visitors from all over the world. Our Israeli team has more. With an average of 20000 visitors in past years, the "Agro Mashov" exhibition hoped to open for new Israeli companies doors to sprouting international markets, mainly in eastern Europe and the Far East. One company presented a biological method for reducing the population of flies which damage fruit. [Sara Goldsmith, Logistics, Biofly]: "What we are doing now, is mass rearing the fly and then we take the males which don't damage the fruit, we sterilize them, and then we release those sterile males into the wild population, they mate with the wild females and then the females lay eggs that basically nothing comes out of these eggs." In another booth, the Jewish National Fund presented their latest efforts in blooming the desert. [Dorit Sadovsky, Jewish National Fund]: "Special people are finding solutions for the people how to grow in an area that is very hot, without water, sometimes salty water." But one of the main attractions was undoubtedly a wide variety of exotic fruits, recently developed by Israeli scientists [Moshe Weiss, CEO, Israeli Exotic Food Association]: "Some of the fruits are just grown as they are, but some of the fruits that have potential to become commercial fruits are being tested for better varieties. The game here in Israel is not to ...

Agriculture: Downsizing The Federal Government

Agriculture is easily the most distorted sector, with high tariffs and, in developed countries at least, large amounts of government subsidies through price supports and direct payments. On the other hand, developing countries, who have a comparative advantage in these products, cannot afford to subsidize their agriculture sector and face prohibitive tariffs for their products abroad. The powerful agriculture lobby groups, particularly in the large developed countries, make reform politically difficult. Chris Edwards, Sallie James and Dan Ikenson discuss the inequities of American farm policies. This video was produced by Caleb Brown ( www.twitter.com ) and Austin Bragg ( www.twitter.com ).

Agricultural Subsidies: Corporate Welfare for Farmers

"The government is bailing out the banks...but who's going to bail out the government?" asks Texas cotton farmer Ken Gallaway, a vocal critic of agricultural subsidies that cost US taxpayers and consumers billions of dollars a year in direct payments and higher prices for farm goods. Agricultural subsidies were put in place in the 1930s during the Great Depression, when 25 percent of Americans lived on farms. At the time, Secretary of Agriculture Henry Wallace called them "a temporary solution to deal with an emergency." Those programs are still in place today, even though less than 1 percent of Americans currently live on farms that are larger, more efficient, and more productive than ever before. Consider these facts. Ninety percent of all subsidies go to just five crops: corn, rice, cotton, wheat, and soybeans. Two thirds of all farm products—including perishable fruits and vegetables—receive almost no subsidies. And just 10 percent of recipients receive 75 percent of all subsidies. A program intended to be a temporary solution has become one of our governments most glaring examples of corporate welfare. US taxpayers arent the only ones who pay the price. Cotton subsidies, for example, encourage overproduction which lowers the world price of cotton. Thats great for people who buy cotton, but its disastrous for already impoverished cotton farmers in places such as West Africa. US farm programs cost taxpayers billions each year, significantly raise the price of ...

Iwate Swan 15: Agricultural School Festival

It is high school festival season here in Japan, but it is also coming at the same time as many students and teachers are becoming sick with influenza and the flu. One of my schools had to cancel their school festival altogether, but the agricultural school decided to forge on amongst all the sick vibes sweeping the countryside and I was happy to see them pull through. The school is known for Miyazawa Kenji (宮沢賢治), Iwate born author who actually taught at this very agricultural high school. He is most well known for his famous stories for children, and there are little monuments dedicated to him all over the city. As a fan of Japanese literature, it was certainly very rewarding to know I was also teaching where such a respected and well known author had once taught many years ago. The festival was fun and featuring dancing, food, and booths for the students to show off their creativity and talents. I was glad to have gone and enjoyed the event!
