In the mid-50s, No 1 Group used to exercise operational control over these air defence elements while a Deputy Director Operations (Control and Reporting) was established at Air Head quarters for policy formulation. After the disbandment of No. 1 Group, an Air Defence Headquarter (ADHQ) was formed on 1 June 1961 and was located within the premises of Air Headquarter, Peshawar. For the next five years, the ADHQ exercised operational control over all the air defence units of the PAF. As the result of a major post-war reorganization in the 1966, an Operations Command was established again at Peshawar, to direct all operational activities of the PAF including air defence. However, over a period of time it gradually became involved in policy functions as well which created a duplication and control between Air Headquarters and Ops Command. To overcome these organizational and functional problems, it was decided to bifurcate Ops Command in 1970. Panavia Tornado - ADV

Due to be retired from RAF service in 2010, the Air Defence Variant of the Tornado has been responsible for the Air Defence of the United Kingdom since 1986. It is currently being replaced by the Eurofighter Typhoon. Although never intended as a dogfighter and despite early teething troubles with its Foxhunter radar, the Tornado F3 nonetheless developed into one of the most capable long-range interceptors in the world.

Panavia TORNADO . The Panavia Tornado was designed as a variable geometry "swing wing" multi-role combat aircraft. Most of this video features the Royal Air Force Tornado F3 air defence fighter variant in the red and white markings of 56 Squadron RAF. However, the aircraft with the black nose cone is an example of the RAF Tornado GR1 ground attack (bomber) version of the aircraft in the markings of XV Squadron RAF. The RAF Tornado is becoming a less common site at UK air shows as the Eurofighter Typhoon has entered service. The Tornado is a lot less agile than the new Typhoon but it is an impressive aircraft all the same.

Kashtan (Chestnut) CIWS is the newest addition to the Russian naval air-defense inventory. Mounted on the Kuznetsov-class aircraft carrier, the more recent Kirov-class heavy cruisers, as well as the Udaloy and Sovremenny-class destroyers and Neustrashimy-class frigates to name a few. Most typically employed as a combined gun and missile system, it is intended to provide surface ships with a defense against sea skimming anti-ship missiles, as well as other high precision weapons, such as anti-radar missiles and guided bombs. The system can also be employed against fixed and rotary aircraft, other vessels such as fast attack boats, as well as shore based targets.

NATO's Fear SA-5/S-200 Surface-to-air Missiles

MABUS ROMANIA ^^^ SA-5 Gammon, is a very long range, medium-to-high altitude surface-to-air missile (SAM) system designed to defend large areas from bomber attack or other strategic aircraft. Maximum range is between 150 and 300 km (81 and 162 nmi), depending on the model. The missile uses radio illumination mid-course correction to fly towards the target with a terminal semi active radar homing phase. Maximum target speed is around Mach 4. Effective altitude is 300 to 20000 m (1000 to 65600 ft) for early models and up to 35000 m (115000 ft) for later models.
