www.ishafoundation.org Ananda Alai, or "A Wave of Bliss", has sparked a revolution across Tamil Nadu, India's southernmost state and home of the Isha Yoga Center. Since September, Sadhguru has set the region aflame by holding 16 "Mahasathsangs" ("Maha" meaning "great", and "Sathsang" being a "communion with truth"). Long-time player John Silvia says that is what got him interested in the sport. JOHN SILVIA: "The ball averages about 140 miles (225 kilometers) an hour on the throw. It kind of comes at you like a snake in the air, so it is very difficult to catch." The players catch and throw the ball with a cesta -- a wicker-basket glove tied tightly around one hand. Jai alai's rules have changed very little over the years. Players have to keep the ball moving by hitting it against a wall. A player must be replaced if he lets the ball bounce more than once or if it leaves the playing area. The game was once very popular in many parts of the United States. JOHN SILVIA: "My mom took me when I was a kid to watch, and ever since then I was hooked to it. The guys were running around and jumping up the wall, and the crowd was screaming when they made good catches. And I was just very excited to see it; And so I always wanted to do that." In the middle of the twentieth century, there were jai alai courts - called frontons - across the country. Thousands of people went to see the sport. Many hoped to get rich by predicting the winners. Isha yoga - Ananda Alai in Chennai: Date: January 02,2011 Venue : YMCA Ground, Chennai Free Program All are Welcome ---------------------------------------------- Isha is holding Ananda Alai Mahasathsangs throughout Tamil Nadu -- seventeen of them. "Ananda Alai" means "wave of bliss" and we have already hit many cities including Madurai, Dindigul and Trichy. The Madurai Mahasathsang was especially fantastic because it poured rain until 5:30 in the evening, thirty minutes before the Sathsang was to start. It was just knee-deep rain. The volunteers were desperately trying to clean the chairs and set up the place but everything kept getting soaked. I couldn't even get out of the car. I had to drive up to the ramp to get out. And in spite of this, about 35000 people came. During the Sathsang, the water started slowly receding, but about 6-7000 people sitting in the center segment remained knee-deep in water. It was quite incredible for them to sit like that. How many people can do that? Normally, in this kind of weather, these things get called off. But not our people. The whole town was amazed at how the volunteers worked -- they were just watching them with the expression on their face, Who are these people working like this? Everybody was soaked but they wanted to make it happen no matter what, so they called me at 4:00 and said, "Sadhguru, what to do? It's raining like crazy and the ground is full of water. What to do?"
