From his Central Saint Martins postgraduate collection of 1992 to his final runway presentation, which took place after his death in February 2010, Mr. McQueen challenged and expanded the understanding of fashion beyond utility to a conceptual expression of culture, politics, and identity. His iconic designs constitute the work of an artist whose medium of expression was fashion. The exhibition will feature approximately one hundred ensembles and seventy accessories from Mr. McQueen's prolific nineteen-year career. Drawn primarily from the Alexander McQueen Archive in London, with some pieces from the Givenchy Archive in Paris as well as private collections, signature designs including the "bumster" trouser, the kimono jacket, and the three-point "origami" frock coat will be on view. McQueen's fashions often referenced the exaggerated silhouettes of the 1860s, 1880s, 1890s, and 1950s, but his technical ingenuity always imbued his designs with an innovative sensibility that kept him at the vanguard. The Metropolitan Museum of Art's Costume Institute celebrated the genius of the late Alexander McQueen with an exhibition and red carpet gala. Hollywood heavyweights and the fashion elite mingled while paying tribute to one of the fashion world's most acclaimed and provocative talents. The exhibition's initial run was scheduled from May 4, 2011-July 31, 2011 but was extended until Aug. 7, 2011 due to it's popularity. 661509 people attended making it the 8th most popular exhibition in the museum's history.

RIP Alexander Mcqueen Biography: Alexander McQueen was born in London on March 17th 1969, the youngest of six children. He left school at the age of 16 and was offered an apprenticeship at the traditional Savile Row tailors Anderson and Shephard and then at neighbouring Gieves and Hawkes, both masters in the technical construction of clothing. From there he moved to the theatrical costumiers Angels and Bermans where he mastered 6 methods of pattern cutting from the melodramatic 16th Century to the razor sharp tailoring which has become a McQueen signature. Aged 20 he was employed by the designer Koji Tatsuno, who also had his roots in British tailoring. A year later McQueen travelled to Milan where he was employed as Romeo Gigli's design assistant. On his return to London, he completed a Masters degree in Fashion Design at Central Saint Martin's. He showed his MA collection in 1992, which was famously bought in its entirety by Isabella Blow. Alexander McQueen shows are known for their emotional power and raw energy, as well as the romantic but determinedly contemporary nature of the collections. Alexander McQueen - Paris FW 2011 the dresses on the runway at alexander mcqueen's show were 'fit for a queen'... especially after the rumors that sarah burton, the creative director for the brand, was going to design kate middleton's wedding gown... not true... but too bad because they fit the mold...burton played with tweed and checked velvets as the collection took a dark turn from the pearls and creams... armor-like black dresses traced in zippers were fitted with elaborate harnasses and hardware...the music for the showing was eery... kind of tied in with the vampire-big-bad-wolf trend in film lately...the snowy white dresses in her fall collection were inspired by an ice queen and her court... live wolves also strutted down the runway...the fog lifted and out came angelic-looking gowns in fraying organza embroidered with pearls... one of the most extraordinary pieces had a bodice made from pieces of bone china and the finale gown, with it's enormous tulle skirt, seemed to carry the model down the runway...
