Ed Pilkington Reports From Hearing of Bradley Manning on Alleged Role in WikiLeaks Documents

DemocracyNow.org - The military hearing of alleged US Army whistleblower Private Bradley Manning began Friday at Fort Meade in Maryland and continued over the weekend. Manning has been detained for more than a year and a half, and could face up to 23 counts of violating military code. The 24-year-old is suspected of leaking hundreds of thousands of secret US diplomatic cables to the whistleblowing website WikiLeaks in the biggest leak of classified US documents in history. Army prosecutors have signaled they will not recommend the death penalty in the event of Manning's conviction, but they could be overruled. The issues raised during the trial so far include the lax computer security at the military base in Iraq where Manning was stationed, and Manning's emotional stability and anxieties around his sexual orientation. "It is important to say that all this [Manning's sexuality and state of mind] area is being raised by Manning's own defense lawyer at this hearing. It is the case that the defense is pushing -- now, we have to be careful at this stage because this is not a trial and we cannot say this is what the defense will do at a court-martial -- they may be doing it for other reasons: they want to get more evidence, they want to get disclosure out of the prosecution which they will then use in a different way at the trial," says Ed Pilkington, a correspondent for The Guardian, who has been reporting from the pretrial hearings for the last three days. Wikileaks document release puts focus on alleged source

nma.tv | http The release of more than 90000 classified US military documents by the Wikileaks website has put renewed focus on military analyst Bradley Manning, the alleged source. Manning has been held in custody since May after being detained in Iraq just days after he allegedly boasted to hacker Adrian Lamo about the leaks in an Internet chatroom. Lamo later informed the authorities. Manning, who has been charged in connection with the earlier "Collateral Murder" leak, faces 52 years in jail if he is convicted on all charges.

Guido Fawkes called to appear at Leveson inquiry (28Nov11)

Guido Fawkes if called to the luvvey Leveson inquiry to explain the leaking of a statement due to be given by chief spinner (liar) for Labour, Alastiar Campbell. Unfortunately, that leak was done first by an MP, the press keeping quiet about that. Slapping an injunction on one website is pretty pointless, when there are hundreds of copies of the "alleged" documents made the moment it goes on-line. Just goes to show how far out of touch judges are with the REAL world. It's like trying to stop one copy of a newspaper from one person, when there are 100's other copies already printed and available. Recorded from Sky News, 28 November 2011.

Bradley Manning: Whistleblower Daniel Ellsberg on Alleged WikiLeaks Soldier's 1st Court Date

www.democracynow.org - Alleged US Army whistleblower Private Bradley Manning is scheduled to make his first court appearance today after being held for more more than a year-and-a-half by the US military. Manning is suspected of leaking hundreds of thousands of secret US diplomatic cables to the whistleblowing website WikiLeaks in the biggest leak of classified US documents in history. For more, Democracy Now! talks to perhaps the nation's most famous whistleblower, Daniel Ellsberg, and go to Ft. Meade, Maryland for a brief update on a rally in support of Manning outside the base where he'll appear. Noting that the WikiLeaks revelations helped spark the Arab Spring and in turn the Occupy Wall Street movement, Ellsberg offers this qualified praise if Manning indeed committed the leak of which he stands accused: "The Time magazine cover gives protester--an anonymous protester--as 'Person of the Year,' but it's possible to put a face and a name to that picture. And the American face I would put on that is Private Bradley Manning." CIA Drug Trafficking Allegations - Sale of Cocaine in Los Angeles - Part 6 (1998)

March 16, 1998 www.amazon.com Watch the full program: thefilmarchived.blogspot.com Robert Parry, who in 1985 became the first reporter to accuse the Contras of involvement in drug trafficking, wrote that the Post's denunciation of Webb was ironic, because the paper "had long pooh-poohed earlier allegations that the Contras were implicated in drug shipments" but now "the newspaper was finally accepting the reality of Contra cocaine trafficking, albeit in a backhanded way." In response to these attacks, Webb created a web site that contained primary documents, transcripts, and audio interviews. By January 1997, Webb's editors no longer contacted him about his stories. In March, Webb was informed that the paper was going to address the readers about his series. On May 11, 1997, Mercury News executive editor Jerry Ceppos published an editorial describing the series as an "important work" and "solidly documented," but criticized the series for: a reliance on one interpretation of complicated, sometimes-conflicting pieces of evidence; failing to estimate the amount of money involved; for oversimplifying the crack epidemic; and for creating impressions that were open to misinterpretation through imprecise language and graphics. Webb was reassigned to a suburban bureau 150 miles from his home. Because of the long commute, Webb quit the paper in December 1997. On December 18, 1997, The Washington Post and The New York Times reported that CIA Inspector General Frederick Hitz's ...

Prison taking toll on alleged UN Gang leader

Prison taking toll on alleged UN Gang leader By: ctvbc.ca Date: Sunday Mar. 29, 2009 7:45 PM PT Less than a year ago, he lived in a half-million dollar condo and drove a Mazerati as he allegedly masterminded BC's thriving illegal drug trade at the helm of the notorious UN Gang. Now, as he spends 23 hours a day in solitary confinement in an American prison, using a meagre $600 prison account to purchase items like trail mix and Lady Speed Stick deodorant, even his lawyer admits this hard time for Clay Roueche is taking its toll. "I am concerned that Mr. Roueche's mental state will rapidly deteriorate if the conditions of his detention are not modified," said his lawyer, Todd Maybrown, in US court documents uncovered by CTV News. But the warden at the Federal Detention Centre in Seattle said that alleged UN Gang leader Clay Roueche -- now prisoner #36994-177 -- is too dangerous even to be exposed to other inmates. "Due to his position of leadership in the UN Gang, placing Inmate Roueche in General Population creates an unreasonable burden on staff to prevent further criminal conduct," says Warden Robert Palmquist in a declaration. "It would be irresponsible at this juncture to allow Inmate Roueche to have unmonitored access to other inmates who may be easily intimidated into assisting him in the furtherance of criminal activity," he said. Roueche is being held on charges relating to the importation of cocaine allegedly under the auspices of the UN Gang, a group whose ...

SEC Destroys 9000 Fraud Files To Top Banks : And... Some Of My Humor

Senator Chuck Grassley, Republican of Iowa, says SEC may have destroyed documents "From what I've seen, it looks as if the SEC might have sanctioned some level of case-related document destruction," said Sen. Chuck Grassley, Republican of Iowa, in a letter to the agency's chairman, Mary Schapiro. "It doesn't make sense that an agency responsible for investigations would want to get rid of potential evidence. If these charges are true, the agency needs to explain why it destroyed documents, how many documents it destroyed over what timeframe, and to what extent its actions were consistent with the law." Agency staff "destroyed over 9000 files" related to preliminary agency investigations, according to a letter sent in July to Grassley, the top Republican on the Senate Judiciary Committee, and obtained by MarketWatch. The allegations were made by SEC enforcement attorney, Darcy Flynn, in a letter to Grassley. Flynn is a current employee, and according to the letter, received a bonus for his past year's work. Flynn alleges the SEC destroyed files related to matters being examined in important cases such as Bernard Madoff and a $50 billion Ponzi scheme he operated as well as an investigation involving Goldman Sachs Group Inc. trading in American International Group credit-default swaps in 2009. Flynn also alleged that the agency destroyed documents and information collected for preliminary investigations at Wells Fargo, Bank of America,, Citigroup, Credit Suisse, Deutsche ...

War Crimes and the White House: The Bush Administration's Cover-Up of the Dasht-e-Leili Massacre

Physicians for Human Rights (PHR) has issued a call for a criminal probe in the wake of a major New York Times story by James Risen with new evidence that the Bush Administration impeded at least three federal investigations into alleged war crimes in Afghanistan in 2002. ("US Inaction Seen After Taliban POWs Died" - NYTimes.com bit.ly PHR is calling for the Department of Justice to investigate why the Bush Administration impeded an FBI criminal probe of the alleged Dasht-e-Leili massacre. According to US government documents obtained by PHR, as many as 2000 surrendered Taliban fighters were reportedly suffocated in container trucks by Afghan forces operating jointly with the US in November 2001. The bodies were reportedly buried in mass graves in the Dasht-e-Leili desert near Sheberghan, Afghanistan. Notorious Afghan warlord General Abdul Rashid Dostum, who was reportedly on the CIA payroll, is allegedly responsible for the massacre. This video, detailing nearly eight years of advocacy and investigation by Physicians for Human Rights, explores the events surrounding the massacre and subsequent cover-up. Featuring Physicians for Human Rights' CEO Frank Donaghue, Campaign Against Torture Director Nathaniel Raymond, and Deputy Director Susannah Sirkin. Written, directed, and narrated by Jared Voss. CIA Drug Trafficking Allegations - Sale of Cocaine in Los Angeles - Part 5 (1998)

March 16, 1998 www.amazon.com Watch the full program: thefilmarchived.blogspot.com In August 1996 the San Jose Mercury News published Gary Webb's "Dark Alliance", a 20000 word, three-part investigative series which alleged that Nicaraguan drug traffickers had sold and distributed crack cocaine in Los Angeles during the 1980s, and that drug profits were used to fund the CIA-supported Nicaraguan Contras. Webb never asserted that the CIA directly aided drug dealers to raise money for the Contras, but he did document that the CIA was aware of the cocaine transactions and the large shipments of cocaine into the US by the Contra personnel. "Dark Alliance" received national attention. At the height of the interest, the web version of it on San Jose Mercury News website received 1.3 million hits a day. According to the Columbia Journalism Review, the series became "the most talked-about piece of journalism in 1996 and arguably the most famous—some would say infamous—set of articles of the decade." Webb supported his story with documents obtained through the Freedom of Information Act, subsequently including a 450-page declassified version of an October 1988 report by CIA Inspector General Frederick Hitz. According to Webb and his supporters, the evidence demonstrates that White House officials, including Oliver North, knew about and supported using money from drug trafficking to fund the contras, and these officials neglected to pass any information along to the DEA. Adrian Lamo, Bradley Manning Informant, Defends Turning in Alleged WikiLeaks Whistleblower

www.democracynow.org — Democracy Now! interviews Adrian Lamo, the former hacker who last year informed the US military authorities of his conversations with Army Private Bradley Manning, in which Manning claimed to have leaked a large body of classified documents. In Internet chats with Lamo using a pseudonym, Manning allegedly disclosed he was providing materials to WikiLeaks founder and editor-in-chief Julian Assange. Lamo is now a witness in Manning's trial. "I very much regret the situation that his actions have put him in. He is on my mind every day. I remember what it was to be that young and that idealistic, and when he came to me, he created a situation where there was no right decision. There were simply choices that were between greater and lesser harm. I had to go with the one that resulted in lesser harm, but still resulted in harm," says Lamo. "The leaks have real potential to do harm or hazard. Additionally, they still do long-term damage to US policy with other countries, which, in turn, weakens our international position." Video Libya Secret Files On British Libyan Relations Found By Human Rights Watch Politics

Secret files have been found by Human Rights Watch which show the close intelligence relationship between the UK, US and Libya. They reveal that MI6 and the CIA had a regular dialogue with their counterparts in Libyan Intelligence, in particular Musa Kusa the former head of Libya's intelligence service and foreign minister who defected to the UK earlier this year. Kusa flew to Britain in March and was allowed to fly to Qatar the following month, despite being accused of rights violations. The papers reportedly include letters and faxes to him headed "greetings from MI6" and a personal christmas greeting signed by a senior spy as "your friend". The documents were discovered in Kusa's private offices in Tripoli. Human Rights Watch emergencies director Peter Bouckaert said his organisation "stumbled across a room containing the files". He said they expose the "close relationship" between Kusa and the CIA and MI6. "These documents we found, their faxes start off 'Dear Musa, thanks for the oranges you sent us, they were delicious'," he claimed. One file reportedly details the UK's help in drafting a speech for Colonel Gaddafi to make. Another document apparently shows that a statement given by Col Gaddafi saying that his regime was giving up weapons of mass destruction was put together with the help of British officials. Another contains information on Tony Blair's meeting with the former Libyan Leader in 2004 and suggests it was Downing Street's idea for the two men to meet ...

Details Of Alleged Sledgehammer Plot Revealed

The Taraf daily reported new details of the alleged "Sledgehammer" coup plot that the newspaper says included plans to arrest thousands, perhaps even millions of people, after overthrowing the government. The newspaper reported Wednesday that the coup plan was launched in 2003 by members of the Turkish armed Forces or TSK with the goal of returning Turkiye to the early days of the republic in 1923 before the Justice and Development Party, known as the AK party, came to power. The newspaper says it has a 5000 page document that outlines the complex plot by three generals and other miitary officials to use bombings and other violent acts that would be blamed on al-Qaeda and the PKK. The idea was to create unrest in Turkiye and foment opposition that would lead to the overthrow of the government and allow the military to essentially take over the government. The aim of the plan, called the Sledgehammer Security Operation Plan, according to the newspaper, was to "get rid of every single threat to the secular order of the state." The newspaper claims the documents showed the group planned to arrest some 200000 people for "reactionary activities" in Istanbul and even stated palns to detain them at large sports arenas like the Burhan Felek Sports Complex and the Fenerbahçe Stadium. The plan also called for munitions buried underground to be distributed to memberes of the military during the coup, according to the newspaper. Bob Dean - Inspiring Message

Robert Orel Dean (born 1929), also known as Bob Dean, is a retired Command Sergeant Major in the US Army, who became notable in UFOlogy circles after he claimed to have viewed "Cosmic Top Secret" documents detailing alien activity on Earth. He now lectures in ufology around the world and has been described as 'an elder statesman of the UFO community'. Dean has appeared many times on radio, TV documentaries and at conferences discussing the subject of UFOs and Extraterrestrial life. Dean is also notable for having successfully sued his employer under anti-discrimination laws on the ground that they were treating him unfairly because of his belief in UFOs. Alleged NATO document on UFOs − "An Assessment" In 1964, a USAF colonel, Col. Frank Collins, gave Dean, a Command Master Sergeant, access to a copy of a document called An Assessment. Dean stated that there were only 15 copies, one of which was kept in the safe. He said to read it every chance he had, being able to access the document because he had Cosmic Top Secret Clearance, As would be expected in the case of such a high-security classified document, Dean has been unable to provide a copy to prove his recount. Dean states the document An Assessment: An Evaluation of a Possible Threat to Allied Forces in Europe (published in 1964) was a one and a half inch-thick secret NATO report on UFOs. The document was accompanied by eight and a half inches of Annexes and Appendices. The report was ordered to be compiled by ...

Spitzer's alleged escort defends herself

Hello on this Thursday, the 13 day of March 2008. I'm Kristin Volk with today's UPI Headline. The woman alleged to have been hired by New York governor Eliot Spitzer for sex says she doesn't want to be thought of as a monster. The New York Times has identified that woman through court documents as 22-year-old Ashley Alexandra Dupre. Dupre says on her MySpace Page that she's been broke and homeless and has abused drugs while pursuing a singing career in New York. The governor announced his resignation yesterday after reports of his connection to a prostitution ring emerged. Neither Dupre or Spitzer has been charged with any crime. Geraldine Ferraro is resigning from her post with Senator Hillary Clinton's campaign. The former congresswoman and vice-presidential candidate made a controversial comment recently about Clinton's rival, Senator Barack Obama. She said Obama's campaign was successful because he was black. Ferraro says she's absolutely not sorry for her remarks. Clinton has said she doesn't agree with Ferraro's remarks. President Bush is vowing to veto a new House surveillance proposal. That bill would update the country's wiretapping program, but allow lawsuits against phone companies that agree to wiretap and monitor potential terrorist activity. The President is rejecting that provision, saying without legal immunity, companies wouldn't participate and America's security would be undermined. The IGP in a confidential partial report served to the president by his chief investigator John Nduguse revealed that the source of the documents tabled before the house is unknown. The IGP Maj Gen. Kale Kayihura appeared before the Adhoc committee as a witness in the ongoing investigations that pins key cabinet ministers in the Museveni administration. The IGP was tasked by the president to investigate claims that Foreign Affairs Minister Sam Kutesa and Internal Affairs minister Hillary onek received a bribe from Tullow oil official Brian Glover to waive chargeable capital gain tax. Kayihura's findings from investigations conducted in London indicate that the account number FGB36EFGB 17800000491740 used to transfer money to the minister's accounts does not exist at EFG private bank Ltd both in Euro and pound sterling banks. Other than the IBAN reference number EFGBGB2L which the private bank acknowledges to be related to their bank, no other information was obtained. WikiLeaks US Forces in Iraq Turn a Blind Eye to Torture

One document shows the US military was given a video apparently showing Iraqi Army (IA) officers executing a prisoner in the northern town of Talafar. "The footage shows the IA soldiers moving the detainee into the street, pushing him to the ground, punching him and shooting him," states the log, which also names at least one of the perpetrators. In another case, US soldiers suspected army officers of cutting off a detainee's fingers and burning him with acid. Pentagon spokesman Geoff Morrell told the BBC that if abuse by the Iraqi security forces was witnessed, or reports of it were received, US military personnel were instructed to inform their commanders. "And at the appropriate level that information would then be shared with the Iraqi authorities and the military for them to take action." The documents also reveal many previously unreported instances in which US forces killed civilians at checkpoints and during operations. The Secret Iraq Files: The War. US turned blind eye to torture . Leaked documents on Iraq war contain thousands of allegations of abuse, but a Pentagon order told troops to ignore them., An alleged militant identified only as "DAT 326" was detained by the Iraqi army on July 7, 2006 at a checkpoint in the town of Tarmiya, north of Baghdad. New Claims Of Police Brutality In North Chicago

A videotape of an alleged incident of police brutality in North Chicago was played during a packed city council meeting in the north suburb Monday night. The video -- in which an officer is seen striking a man and sending his face into a wall -- was shown to aldermen by Ralph Peterson, a cousin of Darrin Hanna, who died last month after being arrested by North Chicago police. State police are investigating his death. Aldermen confirm that the place where the officer was caught on camera hitting a man in custody is in fact the North Chicago Police Department's booking room. While ABC7 cannot independently confirm when the alleged incident happened or what led up to it, the videotape is fueling further mistrust of the North Chicago Police Department and its chief. "It represents what the chief of police and the North Chicago Police Department has been doing since 2005, and nobody's stepped up against these guys," said Peterson. Peterson says he received the video and accompanying police report anonymously. His cousin, Darrin Hanna, died last month days after North Chicago police arrested him in a separate incident. An autopsy report revealed a stun gun had been used on Hanna. "I'm a mother who lost her son by a beating. By a beating!" said Gloria Carr, Hanna's mother. "You want justice? Justice is going to be served. Mother Carr, justice is coming. It's coming," said Alderman Valerie Devost, North Chicago, to applause. Petersen says he received documents purported to be the ...
