This is the first record by Juan Atkins and Richard Davis (AKA 3070) recording under the name Cybotron from way back in 1981. This is one of the very first Detroit Techno tracks which helped lay the foundations for Detroit Techno as we know it today. A seminal release in the true sense of the word. Apparently, this was released just after the landmark track "Sharevari" by ANUMBEROFNAMES, also in 1981. To my knowledge, 10000 copies of this 7" record were sold. ABOUT PASSENGER The brainchild of 26-year-old Brighton born singer/songwriter Mike Rosenberg, Passenger is redefining the troubadour for the 21st century. Formerly a five-piece band, Passenger has now pared back to basics, quite literally bringing music to the streets on a series of lengthy busking journeys across Australia, America and the United Kingdom. A classic journeyman musician, cut from the same mould as Van Morrison, Neil Young and John Prine, Passenger has the unique ability to move from the humorous to heartbreaking with every song. ABOUT THE EPISODE We got in touch with Mike Rosenberg - aka Passenger - after a number of people recommended we record a session. We soon discovered this UK native spends a good deal of his time here in Australia having recently collaborated with a number of our nations finest on his 2010 release "Flight Of The Crow". After meeting Mike at the nearby train station we gathered with the crew in a lovely leafy suburban Northcote laneway. Timed beautifully with the evening fading behind the weathered picket fences, the light seemed fitting to the song choice of the day. While normally accompanied by Matt Corby on the album, the backing for this performance of Golden Thread was replaced by the neighbourhood dogs and birds, such is the reliability of the wildlife we've become accustomed. Local banjo totting, folk pop, cool guy Isaac de Heer had kindly volunteered to be our ginea pig. How nice. He did go to school with one of our crew, but having a pack of strangers around to your home at 10am on Sunday morning is asking a lot. Did we have a plan. Kinda. Who has brought what lens? Original crew member Sammi Needham was already living in NYC so it seemed like the perfect thing to do. Resident cool-hunter Brianne McCabe, who we'd met through music festivals and general shenanigans, linked us up with Vice Records' own Puerto Rican garage band, Davila 666. Now we had a band, but no crew. Putting the shout out on twitter we found Mr Ori Dubow who came onboard with a mountain of gear, skills and good attitude. Brianne called in a few friends including sound wizard, Richie Levengood, while Sammi pulled in camera operators Lucas Hearl and Patrick McInerney. We were set. It's Saturday afternoon about 2pm and we're on a rooftop in Manhattan with six smiling Puerto Ricans. While Sideshow Alley's origins are amidst the cobbles and cracks of a Melbourne laneway, in New York the city's secrets are hidden on the roof. With the weather intent on killing the mood with its rain-on rain-off madness, we found a clear pocket and called action. Sir Charles, Panda, The Latin Snake and the rest of the Davila clan laughed their way through the infectious and aptly named "Muy Chistoso" ("Very Funny"). ABOUT THE EPISODE It was the middle of the afternoon on a Saturday when we met Tom and Jo. We'd chosen an alley behind The Toff in Town, right in the heart of Melbourne's Chinatown, as they were performing there that night and were waiting to do soundcheck. We couldn't resist asking if they might like to perform while sitting on top of one of the large rubbish bins that filled the alley. We realised it was meant to be when Tom's socks blended so perfectly. Up you get then. We had the most on-lookers and the most traffic noise of any Sideshow to date. Yet Big Scary managed to carve out a lovely moment of serenity with a beautiful and personal rendition of "Satisfy Me".
