Recent discoveries in the Altai: Issues on the evolution of Homo sapiens with Professor Anatoly Derevianko, Director of the Institute of Archaeology and Ethnography, Russian Academy of Sciences, Novosibirsk. This lecture was recorded at The Australian National University and is part of the Centre for Archaeological Research Lecture Series.. Denisova Cave, in the Altai Mountains of southern Siberia, has yielded stone artefacts that have recently been associated with the fossil remains of an unknown group of hominins, referred to as 'Denisovans'. The Palaeolithic artefacts at Denisova Cave are between 300000 and 20000 years in age, with Denisovan fossils found in deposits nearer the younger end of this range. DNA extracted from Denisovan fossils suggests that the genetic vestiges of these hominins are present in the DNA of modern Melanesians and Aboriginal Australians, and that genetic admixture between Denisovans and the first modern humans to leave Africa took place in Southeast Asia. Professor Derevianko has been instrumental in the archaeological and palaeoanthropological discoveries at Denisova Cave. In this illustrated lecture, Professor Derevianko will explore how the new data emerging from the Altai connect with contemporary theories of human evolution. nohon Shumarov Nikolai Shumarov, known as Nohon, born on 9th July 1947 in Yaman, a small village in the Altai mountains, attended the College of Art in Novosibirsk for three years and then worked as an actor for a year in the Theater of Dramatic Art. He then went on to study in St. Petersburg at the Academy for Theater, Music and Cinema for five long years. From 1977 onwards he was the theater producer in charge of an ensemble of 30 performers in Gorno Altaysk, the capital city of the Republic of Altai, in southern Siberia. Material is presented there from the traditional folk art of the Altaiic origin, Kirgiz, and Bashkirs, as well as from Japan, Russia, and Moldavia. Nohon has also written plays of his own and composed the music for them. At the age of 30 he discovered his love for traditional and folk art. He says: "My people are my gold". Nohon now works and teaches overtone-singing at the School of Classical Music. This is the only school in the Altai to work with traditional music. Nohon works on the folklore of his home, including works by such people as †Aleksey Kalkin, Tovar Tchetsiyakov, and †Tanishpai Shinshin, and tries to preserve the creative heritage as well as produce new work to suit modern times. With this animation I wanted to go back to my roots a bit and just play around with fun movements and morphs with plasticine shapes and figures. While playing around with lighting I discovered that if you place objects on a light box and rig another set of lights to shine on them from above then you get a really nice, crisp and colourful result. So I used a vertical tripod with a Cannon 450D to look down onto the light box. Then I just played around with the plasticine and animated whatever movements came into my head. The overnight bus races through the Dzungarian Basin, crossing the desert of northern Xinjiang before arriving in the fertile foothills of the Altai Mountains -- the most northerly section of the Ili Kazakh Autonomous Prefecture. This nook of territory with a population of just over half a million is wedged between Russia, Mongolia and Kazakhstan. It is about as far away as you can get from Beijing and still be in China. Its also a place where the Communist Partys reach is barely felt, and where Kazakhs comprise a majority of the population. The areas relative isolation means that Kazakh culture here has remained strong and the music has remained very traditional, with little or no influence from Uighur or Han Chinese musical traditions. The sounds of the Altai region borrow more from nearby Mongolia, in particular from the tradition of Khomooi, or throat singing. Russian influences are also felt to a lesser degree. Over the past two decades, the Altai region has experienced rapid and profound economic changes. Incomes have risen, and the area has witnessed a ten-fold increase in urban population. Throughout the boom, there has been a steady influx of Han Chinese. As the Altai Prefecture continues to develop, these changes clearly are impacting the regions traditional culture.
