Alton Towers Rapids (POV)
The Grand Canyon Rapids (as it was originally known), was built for the 1986 season, and took up 12 acres of space previously occupied by the car parks. Over 40000 tons of earth and rock was excavated to create the channel that forms the 6 min. ride. It even required the installation of its own electricity substation, and the creation of a 1.3 million gallon reservoir to store the water. Great care was even taken during construction not to disturb the existing trees in the area. Back in 1985 during its construction, it was by far the biggest project the park had entered into, and was, and still is one of the longest water rides in the UK.

I didn't realise when I sat at the front, just how WET I was going to get! It was our last ride of the day and even after a 3 hour ride home I was still damp. Also a bit silly to take my HD camera on,as it got really wet (my lens shield won't close now : ( waaah ) Katanga Canyon Themed as an African village; created in 1992 and incorporated existing rapids ride. Rides include the Runaway Mine Train a wild speeding mine train rollercoaster and the Congo River Rapids. Both are well-established rides in the park whose ride tracks share a tunnel. The area has a new 'Explorer's' restaurant for 2009, with a shared indoor seating area. There is a shop located at the exits of the two rides called Katanga Cargo, hosting "ancient" tribal themed merchandise. Slightly outside the area (but still part of Katanga Canyon) is the popular 'Flume' ride, a log flume with boats themed as bath tubs and many ducks quacking around the station area. The Flume opened in 2004 after being re-themed from a traditional log flume ride. The ride is sponsored by the Imperial Leather toiletries company. The Flume does not fit into the theme of Katanga Canyon yet remains part of it according to the park, even though its entrance is now in Mutiny Bay.

Building & Designing Oblivion - Alton Towers - 10 Years On
This video shows the building of Oblivion at Alton Towers 10 years ago. In 1997 somthing strange was going on and in 1998 the worlds first vertical drop rollercoaster was launched. Alton Towers first revealed their plans for the ride in October 2008 when it was announced that Corkscrew would be removed. Planning permission was initially delayed due to concerns about an Iron Age hill fort in its vicinity. However, in March 2009, Staffordshire Moorlands District Council accepted planning permission for the ride (with conditions) and groundwork construction commenced about three months later. During the planning stages and construction, the ride was codenamed as Secret Weapon 6.The surrounding area (previously known as Ug Land) was completely rethemed alongside the opening of Thirteen. The new land was based on the ride's rough storyline of a supernatural forest. The surrounding structures all are heavily themed with branches and ivy wrapped around them to give the sense of the trees 'engulfing' the area, including the nearby Rita coaster which has been rethemed to make it look run-down. The area is called the Dark Forest. In the area several statues of wraiths (hooded ghosts) can also be found. The entrance to Thirteen is situated underneath Rita's two banked turns at the end of the Dark Forest. The queue line travels through the woods and into the gothic station, themed as a castle-like building (similar to the Towers themselves). The queueline circles enters a dark area with a large tesla coil in the centre in a protective cage. On our very last day, we were able to visit Alton Towers. The power was having problems for a few days, so we were given head of line passes that allowed us to skip queues! We missed early entry due to the power problems, but we at least managed to play mini golf. we eventually were able to take the monorail to the park. When we got there, I was pleased to see a tribute to the old COrkscrew, my first inversion on a coaster ever. I miss it. It was freezing, and power was out in half the park. So we headed to Hex. I was impressed my little ones did not get too scared. I was a proud dad of my emerging gothic kids! Then onto Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. I did not know what to expect as Merlin dark rides vary so dramatically. But this one was awesome, and followed the book nicely - a boat ride through the factory and a very cool glass elevator ride. Superb. The kids enjoyed the driving school, and then off to the Cookoo Land show - aimed at little kids really, not bad, but not great. The kids enjoyed it though. We hopped the cable car and enjoyed a spot of BBQ food and Chilli in the Smuggler's Inn. Then off to the Sea life Aquarium of Mutiny Bay. Very similar to all their other outlets, in other words, very good. WE enjoyed being touched by the shrimp, looking at the monster spider crabs, sharks and octopus. Very cool. Mikey was worried that one of the Spider Crabs was trying to get out. Then we headed to Katanga Canyon. It was sooooo cold, the idiots on the water rides <b>...</b>

The idea for Air came to fruition after many years of planning, and construction started towards the beginning of 2001. Numerous advertisements for the attraction were placed around the park towards the end of the same year. In early 2002, testing began on one of the world's most technologically advanced rides ever made, and the ride opened on March 2002 at a cost of £12million. It holds the title of one of the most expensive rides jointly with Oblivion at Alton Towers, which was built at a cost of £12 million. Special crash test dummies were brought in to aid with testing. The Alton Towers Hotel Sonic the Hedgehog Room
I spent the night at the Alton Towers hotel on the first night of opening of the season for 2010 - as did Jonathan Ross! Although he probably got to ride the Sonic Spinball rollercoaster, he didn't get to stay in the Sonic the Hedgehog themed room! Enjoy my breif tour of what's in it! (Sorry it's a bit dark at points - lighting in the room wasn't extensive!!)

Nemesis is Europe's first inverted roller coaster located at Alton Towers, England. The ride's concept was created by John Wardley, designed by Werner Stengel, manufactured by Bolliger & Mabillard and opened in 1994. It is located in the Forbidden Valley area of the park, adjacent to Air, which is a flying B&M roller coaster that opened in 2002. Sixteen years after its opening, Nemesis is still one of the most popular rides in the park and indeed worldwide. The coaster is still ranked as one of the best coasters in the world by many polls, with thecoastercritic.com ranking the ride as the 3rd best roller coaster in the world in 2006 and the 6th best in 2007 and 2008 and The Golden Ticket Awards ranking it as the 13th best steel roller coaster in the world in 2008.Many of the best rides it has been ranked with, such as Superman: Ride of Steel and Expedition GeForce, are many times taller and faster than Nemesis, as well as more modern.
