Aluminum Production During WWII US 1940s

The production of commercial aluminum was a twentieth-century industry. A natural oxide found in bauxite mined directly from the earth's crust, aluminum was made by running an electric current through molten bauxite to remove ferric ore and silica. The metal was lightweight and highly tensile, a strong, cheap alternative to steel. For the first half of the century aluminum production was monopolized by Alcoa (Aluminum Company of America). During World War II, however, the government's enormous demand for aluminum exceeded Alcoa's ability to produce it. To make up for the shortfall, the government encouraged smaller competitors such as Reynolds Metals and Kaiser Aluminum and Chemical to increase their output; it also funded new production facilities, which Alcoa built and operated. After the war, in 1946, the government's War Surplus Properties Board sold its plants to Alcoa's competitors, specifically to break the company's monopoly and create a competitive situation.

Special Features of Aluminum Wires

Special Features of Aluminum WiresIn wiring cords and cables with aluminum and copper strands are used. For economic reasons cords and cables with aluminum conductors are commonly used in wiring. However, aluminum has some properties that don't make a connection fully reliable. One of them is its increased (as compared to copper) fluidity and oxidability with generation of non-conductive films. Aluminum oxide creates a large transient resistance, what leads to poor electric contact and excessive heating. Oxide film creates difficulties for soldering and welding wires, as it has the melting point of 2050°C, while the melting temperature of aluminum is only 660 °C. This film must be removed from contact surfaces, and some actions must be taken in order to prevent its re-generation. To do this, they use quartz-vaseline or zink-vaseline pastes, as well as power supply network protection lubricants. Copper conductors may also be covered with an oxide film, but its influence on contact connections quality is insignificant, moreover, this film can be easily removed. A considerable difference in the coefficient of linear thermal expansion of aluminum in comparison with other metals also results in contact faults. Therefore, aluminum wires can not be compressed in copper lugs or attached to copper contacts of devices. Even in the case of normal operation after a while the wires in the places of bolted and screw connections of aluminum conductors must be tightened, since when ...

Aluminum Production USA 1941

Copper, lead and tin have been used by man for thousands of years. But Aluminum was not "discovered" until 1808. Early civilizations used aluminium-bearing clays to make pottery and aluminum salts were used in making dyes and medicines. In 1854 we learned how to produce aluminum metal commercially. Aluminum - in its metallic form - does not exist naturally. It is found only in combination with other minerals in the form of silicate and oxide compounds which make up about 8 per cent of the earth's crust. Aluminum is the third most common crustal element and the most common crustal metal on earth. These mineral compounds are very stable and it took many years of research to find a way to remove the metal from the ore minerals in which it is found. Aluminum can be very strong, light, ductile, and malleable. It is an excellent conductor of heat and electricity. Polished aluminum has the highest reflectivity of any material - even mirror glass. It can be cast, rolled or extruded into an infinite variety of shapes. It has unique barrier properties as a packaging material, it resists corrosion and it can be recycled again and again and again, with no loss of quality or properties. Producing aluminum is basically a two stage process consisting of several intermediate steps. First, using several mechanical and chemical stages, bauxite is refined to recover the alumina. Once the alumina - aluminum oxide trihydrate - is recovered, it can be electrolytically reduced (transformed by ...

Aluminum Infomercial (Chemistry Project)

For this project, we had to make an infomercial for an element. We chose Aluminum. You might have to go to our school to understand some of the stuff, like with Blitz, the teacher in the red shirt. We were required to include the products of Aluminum and its properties, which is why those are there. The Billy Mays costume was not supposed to look or sound exactly like him, it was more of a tribute to him. Obviously Russell doesn't have black hair or a voice like his. The bloopers are pretty hilarious, definitely watch those. This was edited in iMovie, if anyone was wondering. Granted, it's not fantastic editing or anything, but I think it's pretty well-put together. Also, don't call that number obviously, it's just a random number, lol.

Just Add Water: New Fuel from Aluminum Nanoparticles

Scientists at an Air Force Research Lab in Dayton Ohio have developed an amazing new way to harness the hydrogen energy stored in ordinary tap water. The secret is aluminum nanoparticles. By adding water to their specially-coated nanoparticles, the scientists can produce over a thousand liters of hydrogen gas from a single liter of water. This new fuel is being designed to provide power in emergency situations -- but it could also be used in rocket engines or airplanes. According to research chemist, Dr. Christopher Bunker, "You have your palette of paints, the chemicals, and what you can do and where you can go is only limited by your own imagination."

Mechanical Properties of Nano-phase Metals (Tensile test)

tensile test nanophase Aluminum (sintered) We model tensile testing of nano-phase Al (Al modelled by an EAM potential described in: Phase Transitions 75, 265 (2002), Atomistic modeling of diffusion in Aluminum by S. Grabowski, K. Kadau, and P. Entel.) by either sintering from spherical nano-particles or setting up by a Voronoi construction. Different crystallographic oriented grains (red) are separated by grain boundaries or pores (yellow). Under tensile testing different modes of plasticity such as grain rotation and grain-boundary movements are observed. In addition to that and in contrast to other materials like Cu, No, and Pd (see Literature) crack propagation along the grain-boundaries at high strains (around 10 percent depending on grain size) is observed. As in the case of Cu,Pd, and Ni an inverse Hall-Petch effect (ie softening at smallest grain size) is observed. the case of the sintered nano phase material the remaining pores significantly reduce the strength of the material (growth of pores).

AlloyWorx - Reliability of Aluminum

Queensland, Australia - (www.alloyworx.com.au) Aluminium has hundreds of alloys and tempers, making it useful for a very wide selection of applications. Aluminium is easily the most widely used non-ferrous metal. Over-all, it's the second most favored metal after iron. Newer applications, for example drive shafts, radiators, cylinder heads, and suspension systems have proven to be most advantageous when dealing with weight versus strength versus cost considerations. Aluminum is nearly always alloyed, which markedly improves its mechanical properties, especially when tempered. For example, the most popular aluminium foils and beverage cans are alloys of 92% to 99% aluminium. The main alloying agents are copper, zinc, magnesium, manganese, and silicone.

EASYROLL - Wear Resistance Test for Aluminum & Nylon Roller for FMC Cargo Loader

Wear Resistance Accelerate Test Purpose: 1. To prove the following statements corrected in general principal & and theory of Tribology. a. Metal-to-metal wear, or adhesive wear lead to the following list of surface characteristics and the processes that produce them. - Micro-rough due to tractive stresses resulting from "ADHESION". - Macro-rough causes severe "ADHESION", at least as an initiator of damage. - Shiny, a very thin (or perhaps no surface film) of eg, oxide, hydroxide, sulfide, chloride, or other species. Quoted from"Friction, Wear, Lubrication"(see appendix) A Textbook in Tribology by Kenneth C Ludema, Publisher : Boca Raton : CRC Press, c1996. b. In theory of Tribology, same metal with same crystal lattice type, same atomic plane distance and same electron density. Those materials carry similar characteristics in electrochemistry. Their mutual solubility in same materials becomes greater. They easily bond together and cause wear damage. But metal and non-metal eg example nylon, plastic, graphite etc., the mutual solubility is relatively small, the tendency to coherence of two materials is greatly reduced. Quoted from"Materials in Engineering & Its Applications"(see appendix) Course Outline of Professional Degree in Mechanical & Automation Engineering Design published by University of Xian Electronic & Technology Publication, c2008. c. High degree of miscibility between same metals has a high adhesion and bonding capacity. Therefore, we should try to avoid ...

Oxidative properties of nitrous oxide

A small batch of ammonium nitrate was isolated from a fertilizer. Dry sample was placed in a small Erlenmeyer flask carefully heated over a steel mesh. The salt melts and decomposes to form water vapor and nitrous oxide which was then washed with regular water and collected in beakers. Oxidative properties of nitrous oxide are shown on a glowing wooden stick, burning sulphur, ethanol and propanone applied on cotton, and steel wool. If you lack laboratory skills and are not familiar with the dangers of this experiment, please DO NOT attempt to reproduce it. Do not heat ammonium nitrate, do not heat fertilizers, and do not inhale the gases. It's very easy to get a corrosive mixture containing nitrogen dioxide which can cause delayed pulmonary edema. Larger amounts of the heated salt can experience a runaway reaction, leading to a detonation. This experiment does not show the safety measures, but that doesn't mean there were none.

It All Starts With Dirt

It All Starts with Dirt. This kind of dirt is called bauxite ore. From four tons of bauxite, it's possible to refine about two tons of alumina—a powdery white oxide of aluminum. And from those two tons of alumina, we can smelt a ton of aluminum. Smelting aluminum was the invention that launched Alcoa in 1888. A ton of aluminum is enough to make the cans for over 60000 Cokes, Pepsis, or Buds. Enough to make the spaceframes for seven full-size cars. Enough to make 40000 computer memory disks, capable of storing all the books ever published. All from a truckload of dirt. It's almost magical. And we're proud to have the magicians who can pull it off. There's no other material quite like aluminum - it is light in weight - highly resistant to corrosion - strong in alloys - an excellent conductor of electricity and heat - an excellent reflector of heat and light - nonmagnetic - nontoxic - outstanding in cryogenic properties - highly workable - easy to assemble - and naturally good looking.

Causes of Ignition in Oxygen Regulators 2001

In 1999, NIOSH warned fire departments and other emergency care and health care employers and workers about an occupational risk from aluminum attachments or regulators that controls the flow of oxygen from pressurized oxygen tanks or cylinders often used by fire departments and emergency medical services, and in health care settings. A number of factors contribute to the generation of a fire flash from these aluminum devices during equipment checks or routine use when the valve on the attached cylinder is opened, releasing a flow of oxygen to the regulator. NIOSH determined that a particle of aluminum from the oxygen cylinder entered the oxygen regulator when the cylinder valve was opened during an equipment check. The particle struck a filter component and ignited with the impact during the oxygen flow. In turn, a fire flash was triggered when aluminum in the regulator's high-pressure section ignited; this is the part of the regulator that high-pressure oxygen enters from the cylinder. A similar hazard can be created from the impact of other types of particles in the oxygen flow, such as dirt or other contaminants. Using a regulator constructed of bronze, brass, or other materials with comparable heat-resistant properties is a key safety step because these materials, unlike aluminum, are not likely to promote burning from particle ignition during oxygen flow. NIOSH suggested that users consult with the manufacturer to determine if a regulator is made of aluminum. For ...

Green Architecture,

The Modular Housing System (MHS) was developed by Tim Siahatgar, founder and CEO of Unique Structural Systems. This system is composed of MHS aluminum structural members connected by a patented, quick-connect bolt -interlocking technology. Typically it is designed to be used with SIPs or other panels which fit within the unique channel configurations of the MHS aluminum framing members. Siahatgar notes that the growth of aluminum industry, advanced extrusion machinery, the characteristic and properties of aluminum as a material have led to evolutionary and innovative changes in building techniques, architectural and engineering projects. MHS works to foster effective collaboration between all the members of the MHS design and construction teams with the goal of using this technology in a cost-effective way to meet each clients particular needs. The MHS aluminum-based system works ideally with standard SIPs or with metal-skinned and hardwood SIPs as alternatives which require further finishing for wall covering and siding. While the twin grooves in the extruded aluminum framing members were designed to be fitted with almost any kind of panel, the strength of the SIP is preferred. Thus, walls can be assembled using a weather-resistant panel on the exterior surface side of the framing component, such as sheet metal, foamed aluminum panel or even ferro-cement panel. On the interior side the groove can be fitted with a hardwood dovetail board, cork, cloth-covered panel or ...
