AMALIA RODRIGUES -"Povo Que Lavas No Rio"

ThePop influences that inspired Ennio Morricone's 'Spaghetti' Western sound! Fado is often called "Portuguese Blues", somewhere in the emotional landscape between African drums, Spanish and Arabian ballads, and Delta confessionals. It's undisputed queen was Amalia Rodrigues, who's depth of feeling did more to define the sound than anyone. This lovely classic is a precursor to how ennio used Edda Dell'Orso's soprano as an instrument of mood and feeling in his scores. Today Fado is championed by the great new artist, Mariza, and others. Amalia Rodrigues _ Solidao _ 1969

As a matter of fact this is the "original" version of " Cançao do mar". In 1955 Amalia recorded for the movie soundtrack of "Les amants du Tage " Solidao and Barco negro: both songs had new lyrics by David Mourao Ferreira for Amalia's interpretation , but were old tunes. The first one was "Cançao do mar" whose lyrics will be sung by Dulce Pontes in this version, the second one was a Brazilian song "Mae preta" from the repertoire of Maria da Conceiçao ( this song will be also recorded by Dulce in her album "Caminhos" ).

Amália, Queen of the Fado ( Rainha do Fado ) 01

Amália Rodrigues was born and raised in Lisbon, Portugal and in her adult life reigned as "Queen of the Fado". There'll only ever be one Amália, although it is imperative that the Fado tradition be carried on by such artists as Mariza and others. It may seem odd, but Robert Plant, Jimmy Page and John Paul Jones know the Fado well, as do Bob Dylan, Van Morrison, Bruce Springsteen, Rod Stewart, Paul McCartney, Eric Clapton, Ian Moss, Jimmy Barnes to name but a few, and from yesteryear, "Blind" Lemon Jefferson, Blind Willie McTell, Robert (Leroy) Johnson, Lead Belly, and so many more... BB King continues to practice it also. From Wikipedia: "Her father was a trumpet player and cobbler from Fundão who returned there when Amália was just over a year old, leaving her to live in Lisbon with her maternal grandmother in a deeply Catholic environment until she was 14, when her parents returned to the capital and she moved back in with them. "She was known as the "Rainha do Fado" ("Queen of Fado") and was most influential in popularizing the fado worldwide. She was unquestionably the most important figure in the genre's development, by virtue of an innate interpretive talent carefully nurtured throughout a 40-year recording and stage career. Rodrigues' performances and choice of repertoire pushed Fado's boundaries and helped redefine it and reconfigure it for her and subsequent generations. In effect, Rodrigues wrote the rulebook on what fado could be and on how a female singer—or ...

Amalia Rodrigues - Fado Portugues [Portuguese&English lyrics]

Fado, the Portuguese blues... FADO (Portuguese: destiny, fate) is a music genre which can be traced to the 1820s in Portugal, but probably with much earlier origins. In popular belief, fado is a form of music characterized by mournful tunes and lyrics, often about the sea or the life of the poor. However, in reality fado is simply a form of song which can be about anything, but must follow a certain structure. The music is usually linked to the Portuguese word saudade which symbolizes the feeling of loss (a permanent, irreparable loss and its consequent life lasting damage). Amália Rodrigues, Carlos do Carmo, Mariza, Mafalda Arnauth, and Cristina Branco are amongst the most famous individuals associated with the genre. AMALIA da PIEDADE RODRIGUES, (July 23, 1920 -- October 6, 1999), also known as Amália Rodrigues was a Portuguese singer and actress. She was known as the "Rainha do Fado" ("Queen of Fado") and was most influential in popularizing the fado worldwide. She was one of the most important figures in the genre's development, and enjoyed a 40-year recording and stage career. Amália' performances and choice of repertoire pushed fado's boundaries and helped redefine it and reconfigure it for her and subsequent generations. In effect, Amália wrote the rulebook on what fado could be and on how a female fadista — or fado singer — should perform it, to the extent that she remains an unsurpassable model and an unending source of repertoire for all those who came ...

Amália, Queen of the Fado ( Rainha do Fado ) 04

With thanks to Catarina R for some wonderful Amália pics, and Thomas Keyes for his scholarly comments. Coimbra (April In Portugal - recorded in 1952) Commentary by Thomas Keyes July 5, 2005 "Coimbra" is the original name of a song of the 1930's, with music by Raul Ferrao* and lyrics by José Galhardo, but more widely known as "April in Portugal". Coimbra is a city in Portugal on the Mondego River about 100 miles north of Lisbon. It is also the seat of an old university, and the original lyrics of this romantic song are such an odd, incomprehensible allusion to student life that one can hardly imagine that anybody wrote them with any expectation that the song would become world-famous. It did indeed achieve fame, though, with new title and new lyrics in English, French and other languages. Choupal is a district along the Mondego, and Inês was the heroine of a medieval drama. The song, which is called a 'fado' (fate) has a truly beautiful melody. In the US, it was performed by such ... as Bing Crosby, Liberace and Louis Armstrong. I visited Portugal briefly in 1991, without knowing a word of the language, but now that I've already spent 6 months in Brazil and am planning another 6 months soon, I have gotten interested in Portuguese, spoken in Brazil also. Below I have reproduced the original Portuguese lyrics of "Coimbra", with my own literal translation. The obscurity is part of the song; it's not my doing. I've also appended the English lyrics of "April in Portugal" by ...

"Com Que Voz" is Amália at her best . In this 1970 album She sings poems by some of the greatest Portuguese-speaking poets of all time, ( Luis Camoes for this song ) . The music was composed by, Alain Oulman, of French-Portuguese origin. The result is sheer poetry, sheer magic, considered by some critics as the finest album ever recorded in Portugal.
