Breaking News -- UC Davis Students Pepper Sprayed -- Students that were protesting on campus this past week found themselves facing what some are calling police brutality for their civil disobedience. After being asked to leave the quad area by Chancellor Katehi, students refused and lock arms and hands in a sign of unity and civil disobedience. According to Chancellor Katehi, the pepper spray incident was the culmination of two weeks of protests on campus which had been peaceful up to that point. Despite being asked to leave the area by both the Chancellor of the school as well as the police, students felt they were asserting their first amendment rights. Since the pepper spray incident, students and other organizations have asked for Chancellor Katehi's resignation. Katehi has stated to media that she intends to stay on as Chancellor but is resolute in her attempt to maintain a peaceful and open dialogues with the students. Four investigations are already underway, and one report is expected to be delivered to US Defence Secretary Leon Panetta on Thursday. Oakland activists step up 'Occupy' protest


Protesters in Oakland, California are planning to try and shut down the city's port - the fifth-busiest shipping container port in the United States, in what they are calling a general strike on Wednesday. Colombian Farc hostage freed after 12 years


The Colombian president has met the sole survivor of a botched rescue attempt that ended with the deaths of four other hostages. Juan Manual Santos described the police sergeant as a national hero. US dam removed to check salmon decline


A dam on the river Elwha in the US state of Washington is being taken down after it caused an ecological imbalance in the region. Following its construction there was a severe decline in the fish population, a major resource for the local economy, with the number of salmon dropping from 400000 to just 3000. After decades of protests, the controversial dam is on its way out, and one of the world's largest ecological restoration projects is under way. Al Jazeera's Rob Reynolds reports from the site of the dam.

Chavez heralds new regional alliance


Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez has hosted the first summit of a new regional bloc of Latin American and Caribbean leaders in Caracas. The alliance of 33 nations - known as CELAC - excludes the United States and Canada. Chavez said the time had come to put an end to what he called US hegemony. NASA to launch new Mars rover


NASA will launch its latest Mars rover, Curiosity, on Saturday. It is the agency's most ambitious mission yet to discover if life ever existed on the red planet. The Rover lands next August and will spend two years studying the planet. Al Jazeera's Tom Ackerman has more.
