1977 Korg PS-3100 Analog Semi-Modular Synthesizer Part 1

This is an exploration of one of the most complex and interesting analog polyphonic synthesizers. PS series Korgs are rare and examples of them are few, so I decided to make a video demonstrating some of the sounds and capabilities. The theme music at the beginning was composed using the PS-3100 as the only sound source, without any effect or EQing. Feel free to link to this video or post it on your page, but please give me credit by marking it "by Marc Doty." Thanks!

ARP ODYSSEY Analog Synthesizer 1972 | HQ DEMO

The ARP Odyssey is a classic monophonic / duophonic synthesizer. It came out 1972 and was the competitor of the Minimoog. It can be seen as a cutdown version of the ARP 2600 - although some features where added - the highpass filter and the oscillator synchronisation for example. It has the best sync-lead-sounds I ever heard from a synthesizer! The Odyssey is a real classic - and it sounds classic! The ARP has a lot of features, so it is very flexible: 2 oscillators (VCO 2 can be used as a second LFO), VCO synchronisation, 2 filters (resonant lowpass & non-resonant highpass), ring modulator, sample & hold, noise generator (white & pink noise), 1 LFO, 2 envelopes (ADSR and AR). There were three versions of the Odyssey. In my video you see an ARP Odyssey MK II from 1976 or 1977, which has the PPC (proportional pitch controller), the 24db filter, the CV/gate jacks - and a external signal input. In this video I used a Roland DEP-5 for delays and a Yamaha ProR3 for reverb. The ARP Odyssey was used by many prominent musicians: Klaus Schulze, Kraftwerk, Tangerine Dream, Vangelis, Herbie Hancock, Gary Numan, Pink Floyd, ABBA, Chick Corea, Tony Banks (Genesis), the Carpenters...

Crumar Spirit analog synth

Great little synth I just got back from being serviced by James Walker at Synth Repair Services. It had a new power supply and a faulty keyboard DAC replaced as well as a full service Don't have much experience of it, so just me noodling. from Vintagesynth.com: The Crumar Spirit was originally designed by Bob Moog (himself), Jim Scott & Tom Rhea and released back in 1983. It is a full featured analog monophonic synthesizer with 2 VCO's so it's got a pretty fat tone, but not as much as the classic 3-VCO Minimoog. However it is considerably more flexible than the latter. It has a basic 37-note keyboard without velocity or aftertouch. The two oscillators feature basic sawtooth, triangle and square waves and can be synced together. The filter section is very nice featuring low-, high- and band-pass filters and switchable 12dB or 24dB slopes. Other features of the filter include an independent envelope with inverted and normal ADSR, key tracking and single or multiple triggering of the filter. Some other features of the Spirit include a built-in ring-modulator, an Arpeggiator with 3 different patterns and that can be linked to the LFO, and there's an external audio input for running external sounds through its filters, LFOs or Ring Mod. For the hands-on approach, the Spirit is sure to please. There are 24 knobs, 10 switches and 15 sliders to start. There are 3 performance wheels for controlling the Pitch, Mod-X and Shaper-Y modulation effects (see LFO specs below). Using those ...

KORG POLY-800 Analog Synthesizer 1984 | HQ DEMO

The Korg Poly-800 came out 1984 and is an interesting analog synthesizer with usable, interesting sounds. It has MIDI, runs even on batteries, and can be used as a remote keyboard. It was cheap, almost every musician could afford one - and can afford it even today. It has digital controlled oscillators (DCO's). Not digital oscillators - they are just controlled digitally. Actually, it has just square waveforms. Combining different footages of squares you'll obtain the usual saw, pulse and square waveforms - and some more. In the WHOLE mode it's 8-voice polyphonic. In DOUBLE MODE you have 2 DCO's per voice, this sounds best. This however, reduces the polyphony to 4 voices. It has a VCF - a real resonant analog filter. It also has 3 complex envelopes and a noise generator. It also has a switchable CHORUS, CHORD MEMORY and a polyphonic STEP SEQUENCER. What a pity that it does not have something like RING MOD or OSC SYNC. It also lacks portamento and PWM. But okay, it was a small budget synth. There also was a POLY-800 MK II, which had a programmable delay instead of the MK I's chorus. Also more MIDI functions and a bigger sequencer memory. But the sound of the filter is not as smooth as on the MK I. The sound does not reach the warmth of the original Poly-800. The Korg EX-800 is the desktop / rack version of the Poly-800. It has the same features and sound but CHORD MEMORY is missing. And it can't run on batteries. A desktop version EX-800 II never existed. In this movie I ...

Analogue Solutions Leipzig-s Synthesizer #01: Bass Detonation

(headphones required due to lower frequencies) Here's a brief first look at the Analogue Solutions Leipzig-s analogue synthesizer: analoguesolutions.org.uk This beast of a synth represents the latest in Analogue Solutions' Leipzig line and incorporates a vast number of new features, most notably the 8-step on-board sequencer which can be synced and controlled in a vast number of innovative ways (midi, LFO, VCO, etc.) This video serves as a first glimpse of the synth - yes, it's a teaser. The evolving sound uses the Leipzig's on-board step sequencer, however the pitch of the notes is controlled via MIDI. The sequencer can also be stepped manually via a MIDI keyboard. Sequencer reset is handled via accent (or using heavy velocity on a MIDI note). A beat was added to provide some context for the evolving bass line. Details: *Pure analogue voice and modulation circuitry. *Fat Moog style filter. *2 VCOs with Glide and Sub-VCOs. *Osc Sync & Cross-Mod *Plenty of modulation routing possibilities. *Analogue step sequencer -- with plenty of clocking options. *Audio input so can be used as a sound processor. *Rugged steel/aluminium construction. *MIDI In for software sequencer control. Enjoy.

FARFISA SYNTORCHESTRA - Analog Synthesizer 1975 | HQ DEMO

Demo of the Farfisa Syntorchestra - an italian analog keyboard / synthesizer. It looks a bit like an ARP synth. This vintage baby was used by Klaus Schulze on his album Moondawn, by Ash Ra (Ashra Tempel) and by Vangelis. Basically, it is a simple monophonic synthesizer with some presets which can be modified and a polyphonic section. These two sections can be also combined and slightly detuned (intervals are also possible) to sound like a 2-VCO monophonic synth. It is simple, and it sounds great - especially with a delay effect! I use it today to produce interesting pad and lead sounds in my music - sounds, which you don't get from other synths. It sounds really vintage, like classic electronic music from the seventies! I played the Syntorchestra along with delay from a Roland DEP-5.

KORG MONOPOLY Analog Synth DEMO | Mono Poly

The Korg MonoPoly came out 1981 and was the last analogue monophonic synthesizer from Korg (ok, they have now the Monotron, but this is rather a toy). Actually, the MonoPoly is a monophonic synth - but you can play it polyphonically, too - if necessary. The Korg/Mono Poly is a very flexible synthesizer: It has 4 oscillators, oscillator sync, cross modulation, PWM, noise generator (white noise), 24 dB Filter, 2 ADSR envelopes, 2 LFO's with many waveforms, ARPEGGIATOR, CHORD MEMORY and portamento. The built in microprocessor makes many things possible: chord memory, arpeggiator, key assign and polyphony. It is built around SSM chips like the Korg Polysix. I think, with the MONOPOLY Korg wanted to produce a synth as an alternative to the Minimoog and Sequential Circuits Pro One. Please don't expect it to sound like a Minimoog. The Minimoog remains one of the best sounding analog synths, and the Monopoly (like many others) can not compete in terms of sound quality. The basic sound is a bit "lo fi" but not too much like the MS series. It is a flexible instrument with an amazing potential. The most characteristic thing on the MonoPoly is the arpeggiator, when it triggers the oscillators in poly-mode. Every step of the arpeggiator triggers a different oscillator - unique patterns can be produced. The MonoPoly is a great synth with awesome sounds - it produces fat basses and leads - but also FX sounds, bells, like you can hear in the video. I played the Korg MonoPoly sometimes ...

MOOG MICROMOOG Analog Synthesizer 1975 | HQ DEMO

The Micromoog is a highly versatile analog monophonic synthesizer from Moog. It's the most flexible Synthesizer with a single oscillator architecture. Ways better than his competitor ARP Axxe. Don't underestimate a Micromoog... It's the first synthesizer having a sub-oscillator in addition to the main oscillator. The filter can be modulated by the oscillator in different ways. It has noise generator, sample & hold, mixable oscillator waveforms, pulse width modulation, the 24 dB Minimoog filter, two envelopes and a ribbon controller. It has all interfacing you would expect from a good monophonic synth: CV / Gate IN and OUT, EXTERNAL SIGNAL IN, VCF IN. You can even play a Moog modular system from the Micromoog keyboard. Prominent users: Kraftwerk, Klaus Schulze, Herbie Hancock, Chick Corea... I played the Micromoog with Roland DEP-5 (delay) and Yamaha Pro R3 (reverb) effect processors.

KORG POLYSIX Analog Synthesizer 1981 | HQ DEMO

This movie shows the Korg Polysix in action, with high quality sound. Pure sound without any eq and external effects. The Korg Polysix was the most successful analog synthesizer - like it was the Yamaha DX7 in the world of digital synthesizers. Korg was inspired by the Sequential Circuits Prophet-5 - in fact, the Polysix has SSM chips like the early Prophets. For this reason, it has a warm, "american" analog sound... The Polysix can produce fat pads with the "ensemble" effect, which reminds me on old string machines. It also can produce great bass sounds in unisono mode. Weird sounds are possible with the filter resonance. The hardware is solid, well made - except the original internal battery, which tends to leak. Especially when the Polysix is not turned on for a long time. So, please play yours, if you have one - or better, replace the original battery as soon you can.

ROLAND ALPHA JUNO-1 Analog Synthesizer 1985 | HQ DEMO

The Roland Alpha Juno-1 is an great analog, polyphonic, programmable synthesizer with MIDI. It came out 1985. Like all Junos, it has 1 oscillator and 1 suboscillator per voice. It also has a resonant 24 dB lowpassfilter as well as a highpass filter. The chorus effect is better than on earlier Junos - it can be tweaked (depth, speed). The "tone modify" on the front panel allows someting like "easy edit" to tweak sounds easily (MOD RATE, MOD DEPTH, BRILLIANCE, ENV TIME). The most comfortable way to tweak sounds is using a programmer - but it also works with the alpha dial wheel. I played all sounds dry without any external effects.

KORG MS-20 Analog Synthesizer 1978 | HQ DEMO

The Korg MS-20 from 1978 is an outstanding monophonic synthesizer with a very characteristic sound. It is very flexible thanks to its patching features. Korg planed the MS-20 as a budget synth - and it was the best sold monophonic synth of all time - mainly because its price. Today, it is a real classic, because its hip sound - and because its price :-). Although a budget synth, it has all the traits of a professional instrument - it's a sophisticated tool. It's also very reliable - it never gets out of tune. Switch it on and play - no warm up required. In my opinion, it's the first serious monophonic synth from Korg - it also has for the first time conventional terminology (ADSR, Filter cutoff, instead of "Singing level, Traveler" like on previous Korg models). It is semi modular - like an ARP2600. Indeed, some call it "the poor man's ARP2600". But the sound is completely different from ARP or Moog. The MS-20 sounds more "electronic", "lofi" or "dirty" - these qualities are welcome for some electronica styles. Like on the Minimoog, the oscillators can overdrive the filter(s) - on values higher than 7 in the VCO mixer. Pay attention to this, if you want "cleaner" sounds. The MS-20 can give you great leads, basses, loads of great FX, almost everything an analog synth can deliver. But first, you must learn to program it... It's not that easy to get great sounds out of a MS-20 like on a Minimoog or Roland Juno-60. The behaviour of the patch connections is not always logic ...

Roland Jupiter-4 Analog Synthesizer pt.1

vintage synth demo by RetroSound Roland Jupiter-4 4-Voice Analog Synthesizer from the year 1978. The JP-4 sound is very warm and organic. The 4 VCO`s are always a bit out of tune but this is the typical JP-4 sound. A very nice analog synth! Unfortunately a bit underrated. Not compared to the bigger JP-6 or JP-8. For me the best sounded Jupiter. the demo shows some sound settings, arpeggiator and unisono mode FX: Lexicon MPX for delay and reverb used by: Human League, Depeche Mode (Vince Clark), Tears for Fears, Duran Duran, Vangelis, Thomas Dolby.... more info: www.retrosound.de and http

KORG POLY-61 Analog Synthesizer 1983 | HQ DEMO

The Korg Poly-61 is a 6-voice polyphonic analog synthesizer. It was the successor of the classic Korg Polysix. It has 2 oscillators per voice and digital parameter access - like the Poly-800, which came later. The Poly-61 has DCO's and analog 12 dB/okt. filters for every voice (unlike the Poly-800, which has a single 24 dB filter for all voices). DCO 1 has PWM. There is only one ADSR envelope for VCF and VCA. It also has CHORD MEMORY and an ARPGEGGIATOR - the same as featured on the Polysix. Poly-61 has snappier / faster envelopes than the Poly-800. The Poly-61 can produce some great and usable sounds, it has a typical sound character. It has something like an "eighties lofi" aura, that is charming. I simply like this synth... You can make good music with it, if you know how to program and use it. The battery inside is the same type as in Korg Polysix and tends to leak - replace it as soon as you can. The original Poly-61 came without MIDI. Later models had MIDI built in. Finally, the rare Poly-61M was released, which had MIDI as standard. This video shows what a Poly-61 is capable of. I recorded the sounds without any additional effects or eq. _______________________________________________________________ THE SOUND PROGRAMS IN THIS MOVIE: Do you have a Poly-61 and want to play with the powerful sounds you are hearing here? You can buy the "POLY-61 ANALOGAUDIO1 PATCH BANK" (64 sounds) for 12,99 Euros. After payment through PayPal you will get a MP3 with sound data for ...

ROLAND JUNO-60 Analog Synth 1982 | DEMO

The Roland Juno-60 is a classic six voice polyphonic analog synthesizer with RAM memories for 56 sounds. The sound architecture is rather basic, but it has an excellent sound and was used by many professionals like Eurythmics, Howard Jones, the Madonna producers, Paul Van Dyk and many more... it has the DCB interface - the predecessor of MIDI. With a DCB to MIDI interface it is very easy to integrate the instrument in a midi setup. To my ears the JUNO-60 sounds far better than the very similar JUNO-106 (I had both). It has snappier envelopes and a fater chorus. However, sound is a matter of taste...

KORG MS-10 Analog Synthesizer 1978 | HQ DEMO

The semimodular monophonic Korg MS-10 hit the market 1978 and was the small brother of the popular MS-20. It can be seen as a cutdown version of the MS-20. It has 1 VCO, 1 VCF, 1 LFO and 1 ADSR envelope. It has one feature, that the MS-20 doesn't has: PWM - pulse width modulation. It can be modulated by the LFO, ADSR, keyboard, noise or any other external source. It also has an input jack for external signals - they can be treated with the filter and envelopes. It has a 12 dB filter - similar to the MS-20 lowpass filter. The MS-10 is an interesting synthesizer and also an useful expansion to your MS20. If you don't have a MS-20, don't worry - the MS-10 delivers some typical MS-20 sounds - but only a fraction of them. The MS-10 sounds great - raw, electronic basses, dirty leads, interesting FX... and you can treat external sounds with the filter. In this demo, I played the MS-10 with Roland DEP-5 (delay) and Lexicon MPX 500 (reverb).

Analogue Solutions Telemetry (Mini Vostok) Analogue Synthesizer

Here's a look at the Analogue Solutions Telemetry (mini vostok) synthesizer. analoguesolutions.org.uk This video features various sound types from the Telemetry synthesizer, each within a musical context (beats added). All synthesizer sounds come from the Telemetry and all of the sounds were tweaked live in the video, and recorded direct. Given the vast open-ended nature of Telemetry (pin matrix, patching), the sound possibilities are immense and virtually limitless. If you want to go nuts sonically, Telemetry is for you! The video is roughly 10 minutes and barely scratches the surface. Some sounds were sequenced or played live via MIDI, while others were triggered via the Uewerkuer "Ice Machine Sequencer" [ Oberkorn MK3 ]. As usual, all patches, music, and tunes are 100% original. Enjoy. SPECIFICATION MIDI-CV converter: pitch, auxiliary CV outputs, and Gate. VCO1: CV In, PW In, Sawtooth Out, Square Out. VCO2: CV In, PW In, Sync In, Saw Out, Square Out, 3x Sub VCO Outs. VCLPF: 2x Sig In, 2x CV In, VCA CV In, Sig Out. Moog style transistor ladder filter. VC LFO1: Saw, Inverted Saw, Square, Triangle outs, Freq CV In. LFO2: Triangle and Square Outs. Sample And Hold: Sig In, Clock In, Sig Out. White Noise Envelope: Trig In, Normal and Inverted Outputs. EMS style repeat feature.
