Professor Nick Barr and Professor Amos Witztum from the London School of Economics and Political Science provide a 'set of discourses', in which they discuss their view of economics and the role of economics as a discipline. The discussion starts with Professor Barr reading a quotation from Pigou, suggesting that economics is about 'light' (ie the development of an analytical framework) and 'fruit' (the application of that analytical framework to economic policy problems). Some economists argue that the main purpose of the academic study of economics is to push forward our theoretical understanding (light); others, like Pigou, argue that the main purpose of the subject is to find 'the causes of things', to apply analytical framework to economic policy problems in order to improve human lives (fruit). Throughout these videos Professor Nick Barr and Professor Amos Witztum debate their differing perspectives but both do agree that the 'light' and the 'fruit' are affected by each other. Much of what they discuss can also be applied to other social sciences. As you watch these video's notice how the debates emerge and how they justify their arguments, using theory and examples. Deutsches Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt (DLR), Germany's space agency, now predicts that its ROentgen SATellite (ROSAT) X-Ray observatory will deorbit sometime between Friday, October 21 and Monday, October 24. Much of the X-ray satellite will burn up in the atmosphere, although 30 pieces are expected to survive reentry. The largest single fragment could weigh up to 1.7 tons. Aerospace engineers from Analytical Graphics, Inc. (AGI) used the company's analysis and visualization software to create this video depicting: • ROSAT in its current orbit • The satellite's ground track • Its burn-up in reentry • Statistical debris break-up model • Estimated size of debris region Although it is too early to predict the time and location of the re-entry, DLR says that predictions of the time period will become more refined as the date of reentry draws nearer.
