The structure and themes of the overture follow the play very generally. The main C minor theme represents Coriolan's resolve and war-like tendencies (he is about to invade Rome), and the tender E flat major theme represents the pleadings of his mother to desist. Coriolan eventually gives in to tenderness, but since he cannot turn back having led an army of his former enemies to Rome's gates, he kills himself. Friends, I recently came across this beautiful book of Poetry - Please check it out: www.amazon.com "What Child Is This?" is a popular Christmas carol that was written in 1865. At the age of twenty-nine, writer William Chatterton Dix was struck with a sudden near-fatal illness and confined to bedrest for several months, during which he went into a deep depression. Yet out of his near-death experience, Dix wrote many hymns, including 'What Child is This?" It was later set to the traditional English melody of "Greensleeves". Written for voice (soprano or tenor) with piano accompaniment, it contains no words, and is usually sung entirely to the vowel "ah". It was dedicated to soprano Antonina Nezhdanova. Although the original publication stipulates that the song may be sung by either soprano or tenor voice, it is virtually never performed by a tenor as the male voice's range (an octave lower than a soprano) would sound very odd in relation to the piano accompaniment. The range of the piece is high, going up to a high C-sharp (although Rachmaninoff offers an alternative version which only reaches high A). The fifth movement of that suite, called Asturias (Leyenda) is probably most famous these days in the classical guitar world, even though it was originally composed for piano and only later transcribed to guitar by Francisco Tárrega. Many of his other compositions were also later transcribed to guitar - Albéniz himself preferred Tárrega's guitar transcriptions to his original piano works. Leyenda (Asturias) is a work of classical music written by the Spanish composer Isaac Albéniz. Originally written for piano in G minor, it was Francisco Tárrega who transcribed it for guitar and put it in its most recognizable key, E minor. It is the most famous section in a suite entitled "Suite Española" (Op. 47), noted for its delicate, intricate melody and abrupt dynamic changes. Passing Through: www.youtube.com - Friends, Please visit my Poet friend "Passing Through's" YouTube channel: www.youtube.com , and support him - Thanks :) Excerpts from "Five Variants of Dives and Lazarus": This is a small work for string orchestra by Ralph Vaughan Williams, based on the well-known folk tune Dives and Lazarus and first performed at the 1939 World's Fair in New York City. One of the variations uses a form of the tune traditionally associated with Maria Martin. Dives and Lazarus or Lazarus and Dives is a parable attributed to Jesus that is reported only in the Gospel of Luke (Luke 16:19-16:31). It is also known as "The Rich Man and the Beggar Lazarus." The wealthy man is traditionally called "Dives", after the Latin word for "rich man" (though in the Biblical text he is only referred to as the rich man).[1] The story has been a favorite for artists and theologians, as it is the most vivid account of the afterlife to be found in the New Testament. He was the most famous composer of the 16th century in Spain, and one of the most important composers of the Counter-Reformation, along with Palestrina, Orlando de Lassus, and William Byrd. Victoria is the most significant composer of the Counter-Reformation in Spain, and one of the best-regarded composers of sacred music in the late Renaissance, a genre to which he devoted himself exclusively. His works have undergone a revival in the 20th century, with numerous recent recordings. Many commentators hear in his music a mystical intensity and direct emotional appeal, qualities considered by some to be lacking in the arguably more rhythmically and harmonically placid music of Palestrina. Passing Through: www.youtube.com - Friends, Please visit my Poet friend "Passing Through's" YouTube channel: www.youtube.com , and support him - Thanks :) Excerpts from The Capriccio Italien, op. 45 is a fantasy for orchestra composed between January and May of 1880 by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky. The Capriccio was inspired by a trip Tchaikovsky took to Rome, during which he saw the Carnival in full swing, and is reminiscent of Italian folk music and street songs. As these elements are treated rather freely initially he intended this piece to be called Italian Fantasy. Tchaikovsky even uses as the introduction a bugle call that he overheard from his hotel played by Italian cavalry regiment. Another source of inspiration for this piece are Mikhail Glinka's Spanish Pieces. The premiere was held in Moscow on December 18 of the same year; the orchestra was led by Nikolai Rubinstein. Although Tchaikovsky wrote to his patroness Nadezhda von Meck that the work would be successful (the piece was praised by most critics)he admitted that it was not very well composed. Dedicated to Karl Davidov, the Capriccio was later arranged by the composer for 4-hand piano. A typical performance lasts for around 15 minutes. It has also become known through various orchestrations and arrangements produced by other musicians and composers (see: Versions by other hands, below, for further discussion), with Ravel's arrangement being the most recorded and performed. The version by Maurice Ravel (also produced in 1922, to a commission by Serge Koussevitzky) is a virtuoso effort by a master colourist, and has proved the most popular in the concert hall and on record. Passing Through: www.youtube.com - Friends, Please visit my Poet friend "Passing Through's" YouTube channel: www.youtube.com , and support him - Thanks :) III. Scherzo: Lebhaft The Symphony No. 4 in D Minor, op. 120, was composed by Robert Schumann. Although a version of this work was completed in 1841, Schumann heavily revised the symphony in 1851, and it was this version that reached publication. Clara Schumann, Robert's widow, later claimed on the first page of the score to the symphony--as published in 1882 as part of her husband's complete works (Robert Schumanns Werke, Herausgegeben von Clara Schumann, published by Breitkopf und Härtel)--that the symphony had merely been sketched in 1841 but was only fully orchestrated ("vollständig instrumentiert") in 1851. However, this was untrue, and Johannes Brahms, who greatly preferred the earlier version of the symphony, published that version in 1891 despite Clara's strenuous objections. The 1851 (published) version of the work is in five movements which follow each other without pause: I. Ziemlich langsam - Lebhaft II. Romanza: Ziemlich langsam III. Scherzo: Lebhaft IV. Passing Through: www.youtube.com - Friends, Please visit my Poet friend "Passing Through's" YouTube channel: www.youtube.com , and support him - Thanks :) Egmont, opus 84, by Ludwig van Beethoven, is a set of incidental music pieces for the 1787 play of the same name by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. It consists of an overture and nine separate subsequent pieces for soprano and full orchestra. Beethoven wrote it between October 1809 and June 1810, and it was premiered on 15 June 1810. The subject of the music is the history and the heroism of the Count of Egmont. In the music Beethoven expressed his own political concerns, particularly the heroic exaltation of the sacrifice of a man condemned to death by having taken a strong stand against oppression. The music was accompanied by eulogistic praise, in particular by ETA Hoffmann, for its poetry and Goethe himself declared that Beethoven had expressed his intentions with "a remarkable genius". The overture, powerful and expressive, is one of the last works of his middle period; it has become as famous a composition as the Coriolan Overture, and is in a similar style to the Fifth Symphony which he completed two years earlier. It was revised in the summer of 1879 and again in December 1888. The concerto is the most famous of the three piano concertos written by Tchaikovsky. The concerto follows the traditional form of three movements: 1. Allegro non troppo e molto maestoso - Allegro con spirito (B flat minor) 2. Andantino simplice - Prestissimo (D flat major) 3. Allegro con fuoco (B flat minor → B flat major) The concerto is famous for the dramatic tension between soloist and orchestra. MASSENET: Meditation From Thaïs

Passing Through: www.youtube.com - Friends, Please visit my Poet friend "Passing Through's" YouTube channel: www.youtube.com , and support him - Thanks :) Thaïs is an opera in three acts by Jules Massenet to a French libretto by Louis Gallet based on the novel of the same name by Anatole France. It was first performed at the Opéra in Paris on March 16, 1894, starring the American soprano Sybil Sanderson, for whom Massenet had written the title role. Set in Roman Egypt, the story concerns a Cenobite monk, Athanaël, who attempts to convert Thaïs, a courtesan of Alexandria and devotée of Venus, to Christianity, but discovers, too late, that his obsession with her is rooted in lust. It has been described as bearing a kind of religious eroticism and has spawned many controversial productions. Its famous Méditation for violin, an entr'acte played before a closed curtain between the scenes of Act II, is among the most frequently performed concert pieces and has been arranged for many different instruments. After Manon and Werther, Thaïs is one of Massenet's most performed operas, but it is not part of the standard operatic repertoire. The role of Thaïs, similar to another Massenet heroine, Esclarmonde, is notoriously difficult to sing and is reserved for only the most gifted of performers. Modern interpreters have included Carol Neblett, Anna Moffo, Beverly Sills, Leontyne Price and, most recently, Renée Fleming. (We appreciate Wikipaedia's contributions in the descriptions here)

Although the ballet is presented in many different versions, most ballet companies base their stagings both choreographically and musically on the revival by Marius Petipa and Lev Ivanov, staged for the Imperial Ballet, first presented January 15, 1895 at the Imperial Mariinsky Theatre in St. Petersburg, Russia. For this revival, Tchaikovsky's score was revised by the St. Petersburg Imperial Theatre's kapellmeister Riccardo Drigo. (We appreciate Wikipaedia's contributions in the descriptions here)

"O come, O come, Emmanuel" - Merry Christmas :)

Friends, I recently came across this beautiful book of Poetry - Please check it out: www.amazon.com O come, O come, Emmanuel is a translation of the Christian Latin text ("Veni, veni, Emmanuel") by John Mason Neale in the mid-19th century. It is a metrical version of a collation of various Advent Antiphons (the acrostic O Antiphons), which now serves as a popular Advent and Christmas hymn. Its origins are unclear, it is thought that the antiphons are from at least the 8th Century, but "Veni, veni Emmanuel" may well be 12th Century in origin. The text is based on the biblical prophesy from Isaiah 7:14 that states that God will give Israel a sign that will be called Immanuel (Lit.: God with us). The Gospel of Matthew, (Matthew 1:23), states fulfillment of this prophecy in the birth of Jesus of Nazareth. We would like To thank The Mormon Tabernacle Choir for This Beautiful Song. BRAHMS: The Violin Concerto in D Major, Op. 77 - HEIFETZ

Passing Through: www.youtube.com - Friends, Please visit my Poet friend "Passing Through's" YouTube channel: www.youtube.com , and support him - Thanks :) 3. Allegro Giocoso. Ma Non Troppo Vivace Johannes Brahms' Violin Concerto in D major, Op. 77 is one of the best-known of all violin concertos. It follows the standard concerto form, with three movements in the pattern quick-slow-quick: 1. Allegro non troppo 2. Adagio 3. Allegro giocoso, ma non troppo vivace - Poco piu presto Originally, however, the work was planned in four movements like the second piano concerto. The middle movements, one of which was intended to be a scherzo, were replaced with what Brahms called a "feeble Adagio." The work was written in 1878 for the violinist and friend of Brahms, Joseph Joachim, who was the dedicatee. Brahms asked Joachim's advice on the writing of the solo violin part. The most familiar cadenzas used in the work are by Joachim, though a number of people have provided alternatives, including Leopold Auer, Max Reger, Fritz Kreisler, Jascha Heifetz, and George Enescu. A recording of the concerto released by Ruggiero Ricci has been coupled with sixteen different cadenzas. The work was premiered by Joachim in Leipzig on January 1, 1879. Various modifications were made between then and the work's publication by Fritz Simrock later in the year. Performed by: Jascha Heifetz (We appreciate Wikipaedia's contributions in the descriptions here)

It is one of the better-known songs in English-speaking countries, and it is often sung at the stroke of midnight on New Year's Day. Burns' Original Scots verse: Should auld acquaintance be forgot, and never brought to mind ? Should auld acquaintance be forgot, and auld lang syne ? CHORUS: For auld lang syne, my dear, for auld lang syne, we'll tak a cup o' kindness yet, for auld lang syne. And surely ye'll be your pint-stoup ! And surely I'll be mine ! And we'll tak a cup o' kindness yet, for auld lang syne. CHORUS We twa hae run about the braes, and pou'd the gowans fine ; But we've wander'd mony a weary fit, sin' auld lang syne. CHORUS We twa hae paidl'd in the burn, frae morning sun till dine ; But seas between us braid hae roar'd sin' auld lang syne. CHORUS And there's a hand, my trusty fiere ! And gies a hand o' thine ! BEETHOVEN: Piano Concerto No. 3 in C Minor, Op. 37

Rondo: molto allegro Ludwig van Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 3 in C minor, Op. 37 was composed in 1800, and first performed on April 5, 1803 with the composer as soloist. As is standard for concertos, it is in three movements: 1. Allegro con brio 2. Largo 3. Rondo: molto allegro About two and a half minutes pass in the first movement before the orchestral introduction is intruded upon by C minor scales forcefully announcing the piano's entrance. The coda is similarly dramatic, emanating from very quiet trills, moving faster, resulting in a regal yet dark climax. The second movement is in E major, opening with a much-admired melody for the solo piano. The final rondo begins in C minor, ending with a presto in C major. The concerto was incomplete at its first performance. Beethoven's friend, Ritter von Seyfried, who turned the pages of the music for him that night, later wrote: "I saw practically nothing but blank pages. At the most I noticed here and there a few hieroglyphics which meant absolutely nothing to me, but which he had scribbled down to provide him with a few milestones. He played almost the entire solo part by memory; as was often the case, he had not had time to commit it all to paper". (We appreciate Wikipaedia's contributions in the descriptions here)

First performance: Malyi Theatre, Moscow, 1879. Eugene Onegin is a well-known example of lyric opera; the libretto very closely follows Pushkin's original, retaining much of his poetry, to which Tchaikovsky adds music of a dramatic nature. The story concerns a selfish hero who lives to regret his blasé rejection of a young woman's love and his careless incitement of a fatal duel with his best friend. There are a several recordings of it, and it is regularly performed. Act 2 Scene 1: The ballroom of the Larin house Tatyana's name-day party. Onegin is irritated with the country people who gossip about him and Tatyana, and with Lensky for persuading him to come. He decides to revenge himself by dancing and flirting with Olga. Lensky becomes extremely jealous. Olga is insensitive to her fiancé and apparently attracted to Onegin. There is a diversion, while a French neighbour called Monsieur Triquet (tenor) sings some couplets in honour of Tatyana, after which the quarrel becomes more intense. Friends, Please check out this beautiful book of poetry: www.amazon.com - It comes in four different covers - Hope you enjoy it :) The Suite Bergamasque (ber-gah-'mask) is one of the most famous piano suites of Claude Debussy, and is widely regarded as the most fascinating. It was likely named after Paul Verlaine's poem "Clair de lune", which references a bergamask. It was published in 1905 and consists of four parts, or movements. I. Prélude II. Menuet III. Clair de Lune IV. Passepied The Prélude is played in the key of F, tempo rubato. It is full of dynamic contrasts with a very spectacular beginning and ending. The second movement is entitled Menuet, according to the typical Baroque suite form. It is quite mysterious, yet playful during its pianissimo parts and shows interesting harmonies. It is followed by the well-known Clair de Lune (Moonlight), a very soft and tender masterpiece of Debussy, played mostly pianissimo. Finally, the Passepied. It is played in F-sharp minor, allegretto ma non troppo; it is again playful and ends with a very quiet part after going through a section in C minor. Clair de Lune de la Suite Bergamasque Perhaps the most famous part is the third movement of Claude Debussy's Suite bergamasque for solo piano, composed in 1890. It is mostly played pianissimo, and the variations between intensity and distance make this masterpiece one of the most beautiful from the Impressionist epoch. It is played in D-flat major, with the exception of its climax <b>...</b>

PUCCINI: E Lucevan Le Stelle - (Tosca)

Friends, Please check out this beautiful book of poetry: www.amazon.com - It comes in four different covers - Hope you enjoy it :) E lucevan le stelle was the last romanza in the opera Tosca by Giacomo Puccini. It is sung by Tosca's lover, the painter Mario Cavaradossi, when lamenting his coming execution. The painter Cavaradossi has been sentenced to death for helping to hide an escaped political prisoner. As he awaits his fate, he sings of the sweet memories of his beloved Tosca and his dashed dreams. It is written in B minor. How the stars seemed to shimmer, the sweet scents of the garden, how the creaking gate whispered, and a footstep skimmed over the sand, how she then entered, so fragrant, and then fell into my two arms! Ah sweetest of kiss, languorous caresses, while I stood trembling, searching her features concealed by her mantle. My dreams of pure love, forgotten forever! All of it's gone now! I die hopeless, despairing, and never before have I loved life like this!

"AMAZING GRACE": The Blind Boys of Alabama

Passing Through: www.youtube.com - Friends, Please visit my Poet friend "Passing Through's" YouTube channel: www.youtube.com , and support him - Thanks :) "Amazing Grace" is a well-known Christian hymn. The words were written late in 1772 by Englishman John Newton. John Newton (July 24, 1725 -- December 21, 1807) was an Anglican clergyman who had, at one time, been a slaveship master. They first appeared in print in Newton's Olney Hymns, 1779 that he worked on with William Cowper. John Newton wrote this hymn some time after converting to Christianity in the village of Kineton, in Warwickshire, England. The lyrics are based on his reflections on an Old Testament text he was preparing to preach on, adding his perspective about his own conversion while on his slave ship, the Greyhound, in 1748. "Amazing Grace" Amazing Grace, how sweet the sound, That saved a wretch like me.... I once was lost but now am found, Was blind, but now, I see. T'was Grace that taught... my heart to fear. And Grace, my fears relieved. How precious did that Grace appear... the hour I first believed. Through many dangers, toils and snares... we have already come. T'was Grace that brought us safe thus far... and Grace will lead us home. The Lord has promised good to me... His word my hope secures. He will my shield and portion be... as long as life endures. When we've been here ten thousand years... bright shining as the sun. We've no less days to sing God's praise... then when we've first begun <b>...</b>

Allegro deciso (Tempo di Marcia) - Allegro vivo e deciso Carmen is a French opera by Georges Bizet. The libretto was written by Meilhac and Halévy, based on the story of the same title by Prosper Mérimée. The opera was premiered at the Opéra Comique of Paris on March 3, 1875. For a year after its premiere, it was considered a failure, denounced by critics as "immoral" and "superficial". Today, it is one of the world's most popular operas.[1] In fact, Opera America claims it to be the fourth most-performed opera in North America. The story concerns the eponymous Carmen, a beautiful gypsy with a fiery temper. Not careful with her love, she is responsible for the downfall of many men. She woos the corporal Don José, leading him to mutiny against his superior. His infatuation causes him to join a band of smugglers, of which Carmen is a member. He is happy with Carmen for a brief period, but is driven to madness when she turns from him to the bullfighter Escamillo. Beethoven's Symphony No. 5, In C Minor, Op. 67 - Dedicated To The People Of IRAN

The Whole World Is With You - Beethoven's Symphony No. 5, In C Minor, Op. 67 I. Allegro Con Brio Symphony No. 5 in C minor, Op. 67, was written by Ludwig van Beethoven in 180408. This symphony is one of the most popular and well-known compositions in all of European classical music, and one of the most often played symphonies.[1] It comprises four movements: an opening sonata allegro, an andante, and a fast scherzo which leads attacca to the finale. First performed in Vienna's Theater an der Wien in 1808, the work achieved its prodigious reputation soon afterwards. ETA Hoffmann described the symphony as "one of the most important works of the time". The first movement opens with the four-note motif discussed above, one of the most famous in western music. There is considerable debate among conductors as to the manner of playing the four opening bars. Some conductors take it in strict allegro tempo; others take the liberty of a weighty treatment, playing the motif in a much slower and more stately tempo; yet others take the motif molto ritardando (a pronounced slowing through each four-note phrase), arguing that the fermata over the fourth note justifies this. The first movement is in the traditional sonata form that Beethoven inherited from his classical predecessors, Haydn and Mozart (in which the main ideas that are introduced in the first few pages undergo elaborate development through many keys, with a dramatic return to the opening section—the recapitulation—about <b>...</b>
