Israel - Wildlife conservation project 2008

GoEco and the Israel Nature and Parks Authority (NPA) would like to invite international volunteers to join this exciting ecological project to assist with re-acclimation of endangered species and conservation of sea turtles in the biodiversity rich Carmel Biosphere Reserve in Israel. By the turn of the 20th Century, many larger animals that had once made their homes in the Eastern Mediterranean had disappeared from the landscape, largely due to large-scale hunting. The Carmel Hai-Bar (wildlife reserve) was established 40 years ago in the Carmel mountain range by the NPA to assist the endangered species that once thrived in the Eastern Mediterranean scrub forest to return to this region. The re-acclimation process has three main stages: First, the animals live in reproduction pens, which are built in a place as similar as possible to the environment into which the animals will eventually be released. During the second stage, the well-adjusted animals move into a larger penned-in area, where they acclimatize to the Carmel Mountain Range. The final stage is the release of the animals into the wild at the Carmel Biosphere Reserve and other nature reserves in Israel. The NPA also monitor and protect sea turtle nests along the coasts of Israel. As a volunteer in this project you will gain the opportunity to work for the preservation of these incredible species, while gaining practical conservational experience under the guidance of ecologists from NPA and the University of ...

NWHS - Father Khan And Son Taj

A 3 1/2 minute National Wildlife Humane Society Presentation. "Father Khan And Taj" hopefully compels people to consider wildlife conservation from an animal's point of view, and possibly through the eyes of a child. Children are, after all, the future of wildlife conservation, preservation and the health of Earth in general. A tiger father, Khan, discusses life in the jungle with his cub son, Taj. The presentation is formatted much like a children's book, although you may want to view it first, before watching it with your child. The subject matter is based on a harsh reality (the current plight of tigers in the wild) and may be a bit too mature in content for very young children. This presentation is created to stimulate discussion with added outreach impact. It also introduces people to NWHS conservation efforts in a unique way. The background music is "The Angels Weep" by Jason Shaw - audionautix.com.

Christian The Lion - Full (High Quality) © Beckmann Group.

Christian left the Kora Reserve in 1973. He made his new territory along the Tana river, but when the Wakamba herdsmen kept bringing their livestock to his hunting ground, he moved on. George Adamson said in his autobiography, "I used to count the days on which we hadn't seen Christian, but when they reached 97, I gave up recording them in my diary." Because a lion can live from 12 to 15 years in the wild, Adamson believed that Christian ended his days in the Meru National Reserve only a few miles up river. "Lion Man" Gareth Patterson, author, environmentalist, and the person who continued George Adamson's lion rehabilitation work, revisited Kora in 1998. This is what he found... As for the two guys, the Born Free Foundation tells me that Anthony "Ace" Bourke (referred to as Ace "Berg" in a Daily Mail article) lives in Australia as a lecturer and expert in the area of Aboriginal Art, and John Rendall lives in the UK and is a Trustee of the George Adamson Wildlife Preservation Trust. PBS Nature - The Loneliest Animals 720p (documentary)

Introduction Around the globe, unique and fascinating species face extinction from hunting and habitat destruction, which affects vulnerable animals in every kind of environment. Biologists, conservationists, wildlife preservation centers and zoological parks work to breed and shelter rare and critically endangered animals when and where they can, but many species are down to the last few individuals and face an increasingly uncertain future. For some, however, the future is all too clear. Lonesome George, a Pinta Island tortoise from the Galapagos Islands, is the very last of his kind. For centuries, until they were believed to be extinct, his species kept sailors and pirates well-fed on the high seas. George alone survived. But when George dies, millions of years of evolution will come to an end. Other species, like Spix's macaws, lemurs, Iberian lynxes, rhinos, black-footed ferrets and Chinese rafetus turtles, were well on their way to joining George as the loneliest animals in the world until help arrived, providing hope for a better outcome. Each species in trouble presents unique challenges, including inbreeding and lack of genetic diversity, sibling rivalry on an extreme scale, and individuals who may never have seen another of their kind. There are some successes with captive breeding. For example, the black-footed ferret, once thought to be entirely extinct, is now being reintroduced to its natural home on the American plains after an incredible intervention by ...

Wildlife preservation in Africa is subject to very diverse policies. In the Republic of Congo, animal reserves look more like food stores for local populations than animal parks! Poaching is rife and animals are on the brink of extinction. In Kenya, where wildlife protection is an old tradition and brings important revenues related to tourism, reserves are overcrowded and animals are invading residential areas, destroying crops and threatening the security of the population.

Christian the Lion- Reunion!

***UPDATE!*** (It's been due for one for a while now!) Yes, this is the original video. :) This footage is from the documentary Christian The Lion, showing the progress of Christian's rehabilitation from London into to the wild by George Adamson; and of the pride that Mr.Adamson had formed around him. And by all means, the story is not over, as long as there are people around to tell it! To find out more, visit The Born Free Foundation's website: www.bornfree.org.uk and www.bornfree.org.uk If you would like to buy the documentary (or even just donate- all the proceeds go towards animal preservation), you can get it here: www.bornfree.org.uk The Born Free Foundation is an international wildlife charity working throughout the world to stop individual wild animal suffering and protect threatened species in the wild. I first heard of this, and got this footage from: www.kimbawlion.com Yes, I am the first person to post this on YouTube. And yes, Ace Bourke and John Rendall are awesome. Hats off to George Adamson, may he rest in peace. In celebration of the new documentary that aired April 5th, 2009, Animal Planet has also made a website telling Christian's story, complete with all sorts of neat stuff, so you can check it out here: animal.discovery.com So these two people raised this lion cub who they named Christian, and sadly he got too big for them to take care of so they decided to release him to live as a wild lion. Traudi Riegger visiting with Zuba the white lion and some of her other favourite animals at Mystic Monkeys & Feathers Wildlife Park which is situated on Genius Loci Game Ranch, Rust de Winter, Limpopo, South Africa. "I have learned first-hand the magic and wonder of animals." ~ Traudi Africa's great cats and rare canines are losing ground in the conservation battle. Lions, leopards, cheetahs, Ethiopian wolves and wild dogs play critical roles in African ecosystems, but their future is uncertain due to loss of habitat, disease and conflict with their human neighbours. The need for conservation of Africa's great predators is urgent. National parks and other protected areas such as Mystic Monkeys & Feathers Wildlife Park in Limpopo play a critical role, but many of these animals live outside of parks. "A lion's work hours are only when he's hungry; once he's satisfied, the predator and prey live peacefully together." ~ Chuck Jones
