I hope my story gives you hope. It is just a small insight of struggle that millions go through every day. However, this is not who I am anymore. The concerns listed in the video are no longer concerns of mine now. That being said, I do hope that awareness is raised on this issue. You can watch this video and get a glimpse into my life when I was anorexic, but this video doesn't even begin to tell the story or the struggle of thousands of other girls... or my own. Speaking from a personal basis, you cannot see the cold, purple, numb hands, the lanugo covering my shivering body, my hair falling out in clumps, the cold, dark hands. I just spoke with an old teacher who had me when I was at my worst, and she told me I look miserable, had no friends, that the only conversations we had had were about food, that I was very hostile when asked if I had anorexia, would wear several layers of clothes at any time, including sweatshirts in the summer, spoke very, very fast due to OCD and being on the edge I guess, would zone out in class, etc. There are so many horrible memories I have from anorexia, and I hope to help girls suffering and also encourage eating disorder awareness.. hopefully to prevent the onset of this horrible disorder which becomes your life. In late 1993, Caraline Neville-Lister, a young woman suffering from chronic Anorexia and Bulima, allowed a film crew to chart her struggles with her illness, and her attempts to come to terms with her childhood of serious sexual abuse. Always harrowing, and often shocking, Caraline's story traces several weeks in the life of this remarkable, beautiful and articulate young woman. The documentary was completed, and first broadcast in January 1994. Caraline died five months later on the 3rd of June.

I started to write this song thinking back to a very distinct memory of mine. This song is not just about me, but I'd like to share my personal experience with an eating disorder. I was thirteen years old and my step-mom had bought me my first "teen vogue" magazine. I opened it up and was so surprised at what I saw. Before that, my eyes had been closed to the expectations of women and girls in today's culture. It was a long process, but to make a long story short, I became anorexic that summer. For three months, I barely ate anything. I felt weak...and I was unable to function properly. I'm so happy I was able to stop before I endangered my health, but I still struggle with body-image today. I'm constantly thinking about the way I look and thinking about what I should and shouldn't be eating. Girls...guys...anyone who struggles with body-image...you're not alone!
