How Ant Colonies Get Things Done
Google Tech Talks April, 30 2008 ABSTRACT Ant colonies operate without central control; there is no one in charge and no ant directs the behavior of others. Colonies perform many tasks including foraging, nest construction, and care of the young. Task allocation is the process that adjusts the numbers of workers performing each task, according to the current situation. How do colonies get ants to show up at a picnic, and what determines which ants go? Experiments with harvester ants show that task allocation arises from a dynamical network of brief interactions. Which task an ant performs, and whether it performs it actively at that moment, depends on its recent rate of encounter with other ants. The dynamics of task allocation changes as colonies grow older and larger: larger colonies are more stable than younger, smaller ones, although since ant turnover is high, older colonies do not contain older ants. Ant colony organization provides an interesting model for investigating network behavior and the function of network size. This talk will be taped. Speaker: Dr. Deborah Gordon Deborah M. Gordon is a professor in the Department of Biological Sciences. She was a French major at Oberlin College and received her M.Sc. from Stanford and her PhD from Duke. One of my colonies of leafcutter ants (I think it's "Atta sexdens rubropilosa" which is common in the region). 10/20/2009: I got the queen (nuptial flight); 10/25/2009: the queen laid eggs; 12/05/2009: the first adult worker started to walk; 12/20/2009: workers started to cut substrate (leaves).

Xbox 360 Power Supply Ant Colony
So I randomly got the infamous Red Ring of Death one day after already having repaired my Xbox. I thought this was pretty random, so I followed the instructions to determine what the error was (the sync/eject button feature) which gave me the error "0 0 0 1." I looked it up, and it claimed it was the power supply. I take a look, notice it's orange LED is, well, orange instead of green. I get curious as it looks fine, I pick it up, and out of no where- A swarm of ants begin to invade my hand! Looks like these suckers just loved the heat so much they decided to call it a home. I dropped it and the ants began to scatter around and eventually make their way back in. I wonder if this is covered under warranty. (San Diego, CA is notorious for ant infestations in the most random locations. We'll find them in printers, scanners, power supplies, TVs, computers, and more. So, it was no shock to spot these suckers in my power supply that sits idly against a wall. (The perfect location to make a colony trail to invade the house.)

My most recent colony of ants here is a black species of Formica which I caught up in the mountains here. Having good timing and knowing where to look, anyone can capture a queen ant with very little to no work. Note in this video that the queen is the larger ant with the bigger thorax (middle part) where she once had wings. This video was filmed using a Canon EOS Rebel T3 using extension tubes and no macro lens.

Finally both queens entered the formicarium. The queen on the right is the primary queen. The queen on the left is the either enslaved or merged willingly queen. In the colony, the primary queen is observed to have unrestricted movement whereas the enslaved queen is guarded by a group of ants that sometimes grip her mandibles to guide her to move where they want her to be. The story is I had 4 separate colonies with individual queens in test tubes placed is close proximity of each other. One day when I check on my colonies, I found only 1 colony left. In 2 of the other colonies, I found queen ant corpses. As for the 3rd colony, I found its queen in the 1st colony's test tube. I could recognize it by its tattered wings that didnt drop off completely. As can be observed in this video, the enslaved queen is being coaxed to move deeper into the nest. As the exit is on the left, we can see a bunch of ants cordoning of the route to prevent the enslaved queen from moving out. singaporeants.blogspot.com

The sheer number of ants that can be apart of one West African colony is staggering. In controlled colonies, ants can form small paths cutting through the forest floor as the sentinels protect the worker ants on there passage through clearings. At the opposite end of the spectrum, vast carpets of army ants can cover huge sections of jungle floor, invading everything (and everyone) that stands in their path.

Fallout 3 - Shalebridge Ant Colony
The Lone Wanderer explores an ant nest and kills the Queen. There are two ant nests in this area known as Shalebridge. One consists of smaller ants (smaller by wasteland standards anyway) which are friendly, and the other of 'normal' sized ants who are very hostile. When you first explore the friendly nest, it's under attack by the bigger ants, and you can take it upon yourself to wipe out the aggressive nest to help the friendly one. You can also inject the friendly ants' eggs with a stimpak to stimulate their growth, though this has no noticeable results. Despite all the above, this area has no quests associated with it, and I had never even been here until my third playthrough, but I'm glad I found it. It's a good adventure, especially for a lower level player.
