A fun clip showing the firing of a newly restored WW2-era German 88mm flak (anti-aircraft) gun. The gun tractor (Hanomag half track) and the 88mm gun are both owned and based here in New Zealand. Well done to the restoration team in Blenheim (Dave Lochead, Tim Babb, Craig Keown, Reece Duncan and Roger Lauder) for getting this superb piece of historic military hardware up and running (firing) again. Please note, the barrel on this gun had been previously rendered useless by having a piece cut out of the side. The restoration team 'corrected' this problem such that the gun can now be fired with blank rounds. However, the barrel will NEVER be strong enough to use blank rounds explosive enough to produce a realistic recoil effect. While the current effect isn't 100% realistic (ie little or no recoil) it's as close as it will ever be possible to get with this particular 88. Flak towers (German: Flaktürme) were large, above-ground anti-aircraft gun blockhouses used by the Luftwaffe to defend against Allied air raids on certain cities during World War II. They also served as air-raid shelters for tens of thousands of people and to coordinate air defence. After the RAF's raid on Berlin in 1940, Adolf Hitler ordered the construction of 3 massive flak towers to defend the capital from air attack. These towers were each supported by a radar installation that had a retractable radar dish (the dish would be retracted behind a thick concrete and steel dome in order to prevent damage in an air raid). The flak towers, the design of which Hitler took personal interest in and even made some sketches for, were constructed in a mere 6 months. The priority of the project was evidenced in the fact that the German national rail schedule was altered in order to facilitate the shipment of the necessary materials, namely concrete, steel and lumber to the construction sites. With concrete walls up to 3.5 metres thick, flak towers were considered to be invulnerable to attack with the usual ordnance carried by Allied bombers, though it is unlikely that they would have withstood Grand Slam bombs which successfully penetrated much thicker reinforced concrete. Aircraft generally appeared to have avoided the flak towers. The towers were able to sustain a rate of fire of 8000 rounds per minute from their multi-level guns, with a range of up to 14 km in a full 360-degree <b>...</b>

The proximity fuse was a radio transmitter/receiver that detected an object in its path. When the object was close enough, about 30 feet, the fuse would go off. Before the proximity fuse, the range to the target had to be estimated and that range dialed into the shell. This was difficult against a maneuvering attack aircraft. The trick was to get the tiny radios rugged enough to withstand firing from an anti-aircraft gun. The success of the proximity fuse was confirmed with tests aboard Cleveland (CL-55), 12 Aug 42, which downed three drones with four shots from 5" dual purpose guns. The North American Aviation XB-70 Valkyrie was a prototype version of the proposed B-70 nuclear-armed deep penetration bomber for the United States Air Force's Strategic Air Command. Designed in the late 1950s, the Valkyrie was a large six-engined aircraft able to fly at Mach 3 at an altitude of 70000 feet (21000 m), which would have allowed it to avoid interceptors, the only effective anti-bomber weapon at the time. Two XB-70 prototypes were built for US Air Force. The aircraft program's high development costs, and changes in the technological environment with the introduction of effective high-altitude anti-aircraft missiles led to the cancellation of the B-70 program in 1961. Although the proposed fleet of operational B-70 bombers was never built, the XB-70A aircraft were used in supersonic test flights from 1964 to 1969, performing research for the design of large supersonic aircraft. One prototype crashed following a midair collision in 1966. The other is on display at the National Museum of the United States Air Force in Dayton, Ohio.

In 1977 and 1982 the Swedish government decided to increase the Swedish armys mechanized capabilities and studies of a new combat vehicle were initiated. The new vehicle had be fast, have high tactical and strategic mobility, have air defence and anti-tank capability (both day and night time), have high survivability and protection. Försvarets Materiel Verk (FMV), the Army Command, Bofors and Hägglunds formed a project in 1983 in order to find a sollution. In 1984 the new vechicle were ready for presentation and in 1991 the first version of the CV-9040 in basic configuration were ordered by the Swedish Defence. They were delivered in 1993 and the same year new orders were made of the special versions based upon the CV-9040 chassi. This included the The CV9040 Anti Aircraft Vehicle (27 vehicles) and were delivered during 1993-1995. In 1994 more CV-9040 were ordered and between the period 1994-2002, 509 CV-9040s have been acquired by the Swedish Defence. In 2003 the new CV-9040 Ceasar version were delivered.
