Sony Ericsson XPERIA Arc Hands-On by Aaron Aaron gets a first look at the Sony Ericsson XPERIA Arc, the newest device in the XPERIA lineup. It's sporting a 1 GHz processor, 4.2-inch "Reality Display" (yes, the high-resolution catchphrases will never die), some HDMI goodness, Android 2.3 (Gingerbread), and Sony Ericsson's custom user interface. The device is impressively thin with some nice curves, though it's a bit plasticky. It'll be available by the end of Q1 (March), but there's no word on carrier partnerships or the regions that will be receiving the device. This device is called an isolator. It's a mechanical disconnect that opens and closes a 500000 volt electrical transmission line at the El Dorado electrical substation near Boulder City, Nevada. Another device called a switcher is supposed to open the circuit first, then the isolator opens to physically disconnect the circuit. The switcher has had a history of one of the three phases failing to open. When this happens, the isolator opens with one phase still energized. Since the isolator isn't designed to open hot, there's no arc suppression. and the result is quite spectacular. Because of the history of periodic failures when the switcher has been opened, a video camera had been set up to record the event should it happen again. They were in luck and caught it. The arc ends when an upstream circuit breaker is opened. Full credit goes to Neil Brady who captured this amazing sight. The "wow" at the end of the video says it all.

The foundation of the ARC Angels was laid at the Austin Rehearsal Complex (Whose initials inspired the first word of the bands moniker). There Charlie Sexton had a writing room where he was preparing for his next solo album, Doyle Bramhall II was writing and rehearsing under a development deal with Geffen Records, and Chris Layton had a drum room where he and Tommy Shannon would practice. The initial idea was for a jamming band to play around town when Stevie Ray Vaughan was off the road but nothing came of it. But after the death of Stevie Ray, the ARC Angels became a musical outlet and inspiration for all four band members. With the release of there debut album on Geffen records the band preceded to tour for three years with appearances on David Letterman, Jay Leno and Conan OBrien. Overloaded with talent the band came to an abrupt halt, breaking up in 1994. Chris and Tommy continued on with Storyville (Another Austin success story) as Doyle and Charlie revisited there solo careers. Doyle eventually moving on to perform with Rodger Waters and than to become a member of Eric Claptons touring band. While Charlie spent five years on the road with Bob Dylan. A decade later after headlining the Austin City Limits Festival in Austin the ARC Angels have decided to reunite, release a new Live CD/DVD, tour extensively and ultimately record a new full length studio album in 2009.

Both the Samsung Galaxy S 2 and the Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc are super thin and have fantastic displays. The Arc happens to be about $150 cheaper than the Galaxy S 2, making it a greater value. Both of these devices are available unlocked with the proper bands to do AT&T. In terms of specs, the Arc uses the Qualcomm Snapdragon 1GHz CPU with 512MB of RAM. The screen is 4.2" and FWVGA 854x480 resolution. There is 1GB of storage onboard, plus you get microSD expansion. The camera on the rear takes 8MP photos and 720p video, plus there is an HDMI output.
