What Is Archaeology?

What the heck do archaeologists really do? Though you may not find many fedoras, whips, and (for the most part) mummies, archaeology is still a romantic, exciting, and interesting endeavor.

Extraterrestrial Archaeology - David Childress

This is an archeological video of conjunctured theory of the moon, Mars and other planets that made NASA wince and reluctantly offer several public denials. With hundreds of satellite photos and illustrations, Extraterrestrial Archaeology takes the viewer to the strange and fascinating worlds of the moon, Mars, Mercury, Venus, Saturn and other planets for a look at the alien structures that appear there. Using official NASA and Soviet photos, as well as other photos taken via telescope, this video seeks to prove that many of the planets (and moons) of our solar system are in some way inhabited by intelligent life. There are also many blowups of NASA photos and detailed diagrams of structures. Extraterrestrial Archaeology includes: -- NASA photos of pyramids and domed cities on the moon-- Pyramids and giant statues on Mars-- Hollow moons of Mars and other planets-- Robot mining vehicles that move about the moon processing valuable metals-- NASA and Russian photos of space bases on Mars and its moons-- A British scientist who discovered a tunnel on the moon, and other "bottomless craters"-- Early claims of trips to the moon and Mars-- Structural anomalies on Venus, Saturn, Jupiter, Mercury, Uranus and Neptune-- NASA, the moon and antigravity-- NASA's confirmation of water on the moon-- New photos from Russia and the latest face-on-Mars pictures Extraterrestrial Archaeology is highly illustrated with photos, diagrams and maps!

Time Capsules? The Maritime Archaeology of the Baltic Sea and New Perspectives on History

Guest Speaker: Jonathan Adams Head, Department of Archaeology, University of Southampton Introductory remarks: Calit2 division director Ramesh Rao; Jules Jaffe of the Scripps Institution of Oceanography; and CISA3 associate director Tom Levy. DESCRIPTION/ABSTRACT: The low salinity of the Baltic inhibits those organisms that live on and degrade organic materials, particularly wood. This means that wooden shipwrecks survive in far better states of preservation than in other seas. This lecture reviews the history of northern Europe through three thousand years of shipwrecks, bog finds and rock art and suggests that major episodes of innovation and change in shipbuilding manifest similarly profound changes in society. SPEAKER BIO: Jonathan Adams is a specialist in maritime archaeology, with interests in ships as manifestations of innovation and social change, and in the practice of archaeology in the coastal zone and under water, particularly the ethics of the developing field of deepwater archaeology.

Great Riddles in Archaeology: King Arthur, Camelot, and the Quest for a Holy Grail

For centuries, the legend of King Arthur, Camelot and the quest for the Holy Grail has captivated the world. Was there really a Holy Grail, and how did it find its way to Britain and the Arthurian legend? Were Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table real historical figures? What does the archaeology of this era tell us? Dr. Richard Hodges, the Williams Director of the Penn Museum and a noted Medievalist, is the kickoff speaker of this popular lecture series, running October 2011 through June 2012.

Archaeology

This song is available at www.cdbaby.com When Cataclysm launched, I set myself a challenge to try and write a song about World of Warcraft's new profession -- Archaeology. It was during this process that Doctor Jones revealed he's not quite the 2-dimensional, pop-culture cardboard cut-out everyone makes him out to be. So... yet another Greyfoo movie with protagonists walking places, panning shots and girls staring wistfully into the camera, daring it not to fade them out (again). There's my usual token wardrobe malfunction too (bonus points if you spot it!). Ah if I only I could just record what's in my head straight onto YouTube, we'd all be better off. Actually, if I could do that, I'd probably just end up making endless movies about boobs, and nothing would actually get done. Cheers Grey * * * * Ooh, it's a crazy ol' dance, roll of the dice, life's so happenstance. I don't believe in fate, cos fate don't believe in me. Sometimes when I'm all alone, singin' to myself among the clay and the bones, I realise I'm seeking a sign, that all is forgiven in time... *chorus* and nobody understands why I'm diggin' like a madman here in the sand or why I work around the clock just to have a piece of shiny crap from under a rock, they'll say it's archaeology, a million years ago, when you still loved me. And all of this unearthed wealth keeps me busy but I guess you can't fool yourself. Underground with an ancient art, I just can't hide my broken heart... *chorus repeats out ...

Giorgio Agamben. The Archaeology of Commandment. 2011

www.egs.edu Giorgio Agamben, contemporary philosopher, begins his 2011 summer seminar. Agamben discusses the difference between commandment and obedience, the Greek word arche (both origin and commandment), Martin Heidegger, Jacques Derrida, Michel Foucault, and Franz Kafka.Public open lecture for the students and faculty of the European Graduate School EGS Media and Communication Studies department program Saas-Fee Switzerland. Giorgio Agamben is perhaps Italy's most famous contemporary philosopher; as a leading figure in both philosophy and radical political thought, he has been intimately connected, along with Antonio Negri and Paolo Virno to Italy's post-1968 leftist politics. During his tenure as professor at the Universita di Venizia, he has written widely on philosophy, politics, theology as well as radical critical theory—indeed, there is little in the world of critical theory that he has not at some point touched upon. Working in the wake of such thinkers as Michel Foucault and Jacques Derrida, as well as Martin Heidegger (with whom he studied with as a post-doctoral student) Agamben has become one the most influential thinkers of his generation, concerned primarily with the proper ethical and political task of thought. With over sixteen titles translated into English so far, Agamben's work covers fields as diverse as Biblical studies, cinema, classical and medieval literature, linguistics, juridic philosophy, as well as commentary on world politics, theories of ...

Great Riddles in Archaeology Lecture Series: Ötzi the Iceman

Dr. Thomas Tartaron February 1, 2012 In 1991, two German tourists discovered a frozen body emerging from the melting ice of a glacier in the Alps along the Italian-Austrian border. Although it was initially believed to be a modern corpse, it quickly became apparent that the body was quite ancient, mummified naturally in the frozen environment. The discovery set off a frenzy of examinations and testing, as well as a series of disputes about the discovery and ownership of the mummy, Great and even claims of a "mummy's curse." Nicknamed "Ötzi" after the Ötz Valley in which he was found, the male mummy has been dated to approximately 5300 years ago. Dr. Thomas Tartaron, Assistant Professor of Classical Studies, University of Pennsylvania, recounts the story of Ötzi's discovery and subsequent investigation, separating fact from fiction.

Ollantaytambo: Impossible Archaeology & Alien Technology?

Ollantaytambo is a town and an Inca archaeological site in southern Peru some 60 kilometers northwest of the city of Cusco. Due to the enormous size of the stone blocks used to construct the city, and due to the fact that the blocks appear to have been machined, some speculate that the technology used to construct Ollantaytambo did not exist at the time of construction and therefore must have been constructed by ancient aliens. While there is no proof, some cite Ollantaytambo as evidence. Of personal interest to me is how the blocks were cut out of the mountain side with rounded corners. How do you think that would be possible using technology then... and today? This segment posted under fair use law for the purpose of public discussion and no profit is earned by the poster from this video. This was originally aired on on the History channel show "Ancient Aliens" season 3 episode 6 "Aliens and Ancient Engineers".

Hector Avalos: How Archaeology Killed Biblical History - Part 1 of 2

Atheist Talk cable program by Minnesota Atheists. "Hector Avalos: How Archaeology Killed Biblical History" recorded 10/23/2007 Part 1 of 2 Hector Avalos is professor of religious studies at Iowa State University and the author or editor of six books on Biblical studies and religion, including his recently published work, The End of Biblical Studies. Join us for a fascinating presentation detailing how the more we discover about the ancient world, the less reliable we find the Bible. From the dust jacket of The End of Biblical Studies: Hector Avalos calls for an end to biblical studies as we know them. He outlines two main arguments for this surprising conclusion. First, academic biblical scholarship has clearly succeeded in showing that the ancient civilization that produced the Bible held beliefs about the origin, nature, and purpose of the world and humanity that are fundamentally opposed to the views of modern society. The Bible is thus largely irrelevant to the needs and concerns of contemporary human beings. Second, Avalos criticizes his colleagues for applying a variety of flawed and specious techniques aimed at maintaining the illusion that the Bible is still relevant in today's world. In effect, he accuses his profession of being more concerned about its self-preservation than about giving an honest account of its own findings to the general public and faith communities.
