This is Part II. Ampex fans will enjoy hearing, at 1:52 "This program is now being recored on Ampex Color tape, and it can be played back immediately and you can't tell that it isn't a live program..." The Kitchen Debate was a series of impromptu exchanges (through interpreters) between then US Vice President Richard Nixon and Soviet Premier Nikita Khrushchev at the opening of the American National Exhibition at Sokolniki Park in Moscow on July 24, 1959. For the exhibition, an entire house was built that the American exhibitors claimed anyone in America could afford. It was filled with labor saving and recreational devices meant to represent the fruits of the capitalist American consumer market. It was the first high-level meeting between Soviet and US leaders since the Geneva Summit in 1955. It took place in a number of locations at the exhibition but primarily in the kitchen of a suburban model house, cut in half so it could be viewed easily. The two men discussed the merits of each of their respective economic systems, capitalism and communism. It was recorded on Ampex color videotape, a new technology pioneered in the US by the Ampex company.; during the debate Nixon pointed this out as one of the many American technological advances. Both men argued for their countrys industrial accomplishments, with Khrushchev stressing the Soviets focus on things that matter rather than luxury. Archival footage married with part of a Christopher Hitchens speech, showing Saddam Hussein's final purge of the Iraqi Baath Party leadership. You'll notice a couple of small details are different than Hitchens remembers. The audience is larger, and the confessor does not come in wearing chains (metaphorically, perhaps, but not literally.) We don't know exactly how many hundreds of party members were killed in this purge in the whole of Iraq, but of the 68 taken out of this room on July 22, 1979, at least 22 were executed (by their fellow party members). Sadly, the bloodbath for Iraqis and the region was only just beginning. Remember: Fascism means war. The speech is entitled "Axis of Evil" and can be found on fora.tv and here on youtube. GONDOR IN DECLINE - as heard in the FOTR when Boromir speaks of his father during the Council of Elrond GONDOR IN ASCENSION - DA says this about Gondor in Ascension: "though the Ascension theme is not fully heard until the third film, the Heroics of Aragorn theme...hints at the second half of the Ascension melody." A documentary about the history of skateboarding (with german Subtitles). It won the Independent Spirit Award for Best Documentary Feature. Using a mix of film the Zephyr skateboard team shot in the 1970s by Craig Stecyk and more recent interviews, the documentary tells the story of a group of teenage surfer/skateboarders and their influence on the history of skateboarding (and to a lesser extent surfing) culture. It is narrated by Sean Penn and directed by Stacy Peralta. Much of the archival footage used in the film came from teenagers who wanted to be a part of the Z-Boys group but were not good enough skateboarders so they got to be a part of the Z-Boys group by filming and photographing them. The film's $400000 budget was financed by Vans, Inc., whose skateboarding shoes Stacy Peralta had been paid to endorse during his days as a professional skateboarder. Dogtown is the nickname of a portion of "the Santa Monica, California area that Pacific Ocean Park bridge[s].Jeff Ho's shop was on the corner of Bay and Main, right next to where the Horizons West shop founded by Z-Boy Nathan Pratt currently exists.
