On 24 December 1979, Ariane made its first flight from French Guiana, marking the beginning of 30 years of success and giving Europe a guaranteed independent access to space. With Ariane, ESA could develop its own programmes in many different domains: telecommunications, Earth observation, science and exploration. Europe was the pioneer in the civil launch space market, with the creation of Arianespace, the world-leading space transportation company.

People have uploaded shorter copies, but here's a longer copy of the Ariane 5 rocket's ill-fated first launch, which ended in explosion back in 1996. Now a quite reliable rocket, the failure was caused by a "software bug". As it was an unmanned flight, there were no victims, but it was an expensive blunder, destroying the scientific "Cluster" spacecraft, which luckily managed to get the funding be re-built for a later mission. In this video, you see the engine starting, the countdown announcer, most of the launch, the rocket's failure, and people watching debris falling from the sky.

On 21 September 2011, an Ariane 5 launcher lifted off from Europe's Spaceport in French Guiana on its mission to place two telecommunications satellites, Arabsat-5C and SES-2, into their planned transfer orbits. Liftoff of flight VA204, the 60th Ariane 5 mission, came at 23:38 CEST (21:38 GMT; 18:38 French Guiana). The target injection orbit had a perigee altitude of 249.6 km, an apogee altitude at injection of 35 957 km and an inclination of 2º. The satellites were accurately injected into their transfer orbits about 27 minutes and 35 minutes after liftoff, respectively.

August 21, 2009 - Kourou Space Center. Arianespace reinforced its position as the worlds commercial launch services provider of choice with the fourth Ariane 5 flight of 2009, which orbited two Asia-Pacific telecommunications satellites tonight on the 32nd consecutive mission success of this workhorse vehicle. Lifting off from the Spaceports ELA-3 launch zone in French Guiana, the Ariane 5 injected its JCSAT-12 and Optus D3 payloads into geostationary transfer orbit during a flight that lasted just over 34 minutes. Tonights mission marked another on-time departure for Ariane 5, starting its climb-out at the 7:09 pm opening of a one-hour launch window. It quickly passed through a thin layer of clouds, and was followed by tracking cameras that provided a clear view of the launchers trajectory including the downrange separation of Ariane 5s two solid propellant boosters at an altitude of nearly 68 kilometers. The satellite passengers lofted by Ariane 5 were built by US manufacturers and will be operated by two of Arianespaces key Asia-Pacific customers: SKY Perfect JSAT Corporation of Japan and the Optus telecommunications provider in Australia. Ariane 5s payload lift performance for tonights heavyweight flight was approximately 7655 kg. which included the two satellites combined 6500-kg. mass, plus the SYLDA dual-passenger dispenser system and satellite integration hardware for the vehicles payload stack.

Music from Rebellog www.rebellog.com Albert Roussel Bacchus and Ariadne (Bacchus et Ariane) opus 43 written 1930. Its composition roughly coincides with that of Roussel's third symphony and describes the abduction of Ariadne by Dionysus. The original work, in two acts, was premiered by the Paris Opera under the direction of Philippe Gaubert on May 22, 1931, with choreography by Serge Lifar and sets by Giorgio de Chirico. Roussel created two orchestral suites from the score, the first premiered by Charles Münch on April 2, 1933 and the second by Pierre Monteux a year later. A late work, the piece reflects Roussel's distinctive orchestration style and his preference for late classical rhythms and harmonies.
