The AR-10 is an American 7.62 mm battle rifle developed by Eugene Stoner in the late 1950s at ArmaLite. The rifle had innovative features at the time of its introduction, and while the AR-10 was not adopted, it eventually led to the development of the M16 Series rifles. The design is now 55 years old, and still being used to this day.

The video displays why various militaries around the world were very interested in the AR-10 design and why it was able to out-perform many competing designs. The larger 7.62x51mm NATO cartridge provided enough power to drive the bolt system through most fouling, coupled with a slower burning and cleaner powder meant it didn't foul as quickly as the later cut-down AR-15, developed by Stoner's chief assistants Robert Fremont and Jim Sullivan, under request by the military as a production-prototype. ArmaLite later developed the more influential AR-18 as a cheaper, more reliable, alternative to the AR-15 design. Shooting the 50 for the 1st time. 600 yards at the bullet proof acrylic. Took a while to zero the scope but after around 15 shots we were all scoring hits. The 50 completely destroyed the bullet proof acrylic. I will make a slide show of the damage in the next couple of days so everyone can see the destruction.

My buddy Don lets us shoot his AR-50 at a 350 yard steel plate, then talks shop about the rifle, the round, and the plate. I must have lollygagged at lunch too long, because I missed some of the fun. Well here is my take on the "break in "controversy. Some will argue that it is a waste of time, with no added benefit to the guns overall accuracy. After asking a lot of very good long range marksmen as well as manufacturers of precision rifle barrels, I made my decision as to what to do. That decision was to follow a regimented break in procedure for the first 20 rounds. Now whether or not the process actually helped, I really do not know. What I do know is that the rifle in this video shoots extremely accurate, 30 round aggregate is consistently 16 inches or less and I have shot many sub 7 inch, 5 shot groups, all at 1000 yards. Yes, I do build my own ammunition, with careful attention paid to virtually all aspects of loading. I sort all projectiles by weight and ogive/base length and weigh my powder charge out 3 decimal places to the right, everything the same way every time. So make your own decision, I follow this procedure of breaking in on all of my rifles and am always pleased with the outcome, it seems to work for me.

This rifle is a collapsible .22LR "Aircrew Survival Rifle". Armalite used the research and tooling for the AR-5/MA-1 to develop the AR-7, an eight-shot semi-automatic rifle chambered for the .22 Long Rifle cartridge. Released in 1959 as a civilian survival weapon, the AR-7 is related to the AR-5 in terms of its overall layout, and retains the same modular takedown, storage in stock, and the ability to float. Having seen it in a James Bond Film as a kid, I had to take this home when I saw it. A version of this is made to this day by Henry Repeating Arms, but this specimen is an original late 60's - early 70's ArmaLite in fine condition with original box and paperwork as well as some relics from the former owner in the box. en.wikipedia.org
