UN special envoy to the Middle East Terry Rod Larssen has said that weapons are being smuggled from Syrian to Lebanon and from Lebanon to Syria. The first part of his statement came as no surprise as Larssen has repeatedly said that arms were being sent to Hezbollah across the border from Syria. But the second part of his statement marked the first time a UN official confirms the smuggling of arms from Lebanon into Syria, a point which has been repeatedly made by Syrian officials who have said that arms were being sent across the border from Lebanon to terrorist groups. The remarks also come amid warnings from UN special envoy to Syria Kofi Annan that Syria was descending into a civil war. In late April the Lebanese army together with the United Nations interim forces in Lebanon, the Unifil intercepted a ship loaded with arms in the northern Lebanese city of Tripoli. The ship had set out from Libya and is believed to have been carrying weapons for the Syrian armed groups. Analysts say that the Russian and Chinese stances are having an effect in somewhat obliging the United Nations to look into both sides of the story. The United States meanwhile has stopped short of openly supporting the transfer of arms to the Syrian armed groups. The Obama administration has instead opted for providing non lethal assistance. A ship suspected of carrying weapons headed for Syria has docked at a Turkish port. The Turkish authorities are expected to carry out a detailed search of the vessel, which was named by the Dogan news agency as the Atlantic Cruiser. This follows an incident last year in which Turkey seized a huge weapons cache from an Iranian cargo plane bound for Aleppo in Syria. The plane, owned by Iran's YasAir Cargo Airline, was supposed to be carrying car parts. It was asked to make a "technical stop" at Diyarbakir where the weapons were found. In a separate incident a truck was found to be carrying military grade explosives also heading for Aleppo. The Atlantic Cruiser appeared to be destined for Tartus in Syria when it received a UN warning to change course and headed for the port at Iskenderun. It was sailing under the colours of Bermuda and may be the same ship as the one Der Spiegel Online reported on Monday was a German-owned vessel of the same name, belonging to the shipping company W. The Lebanese navy intercepted a ship on Friday suspected of carrying weapons destined for Syria's rebel army, a security official told Agence France Presse. The vessel "Lutfallah II" was stopped by the navy off Lebanon's northern coast and towed to a port near the city of Batroun. News reports said the ship was coming from the Egyptian port of Alexandria and was headed to the Lebanese coastal city of Tripoli. Al-Manar television also reported that the ship had sailed from Alexandria in Egypt and that it had been headed to Tripoli in northern Lebanon. It said that it was shipping three containers loaded with weapons. Meanwhile, Lebanon's state-run television Tele Liban reported that the ship had first sailed from Libya ahead of arriving at Alexandria and that it is owned by Syrian national Mohammed Khafaja. Tele Liban said shipping agent Ahmed Bernard was arrested without mentioning the identity of his imprisoners. The TV network said the ship sailed from Libya under the guise of carrying engines and oils. An AFP photographer at the port where the vessel was towed said dozens of army personnel could be seen around the ship. Three large container trucks were also seen entering the port.
