Arms trade ban - No exports of weapons from Switzerland - debate and vote

The Swiss will vote on November 29 on a controversial initiative that would ban the export of Swiss manufactured military weapons and ammunition. Opponents say the ban would cost jobs, while supporters say lives should come before profits. As the initiative advocates changes to the constitution, it has to be approved by both the Swiss people and the cantons. Julie Hunt reports. (Julie Hunt, SF/swissinfo.ch 24.11.2009)

'Bout punished by US for taking over CIA's arms business'

Moscow says it will seek to bring Viktor Bout back to his country. The Thai court's decision to allow the extradition of the suspected arms dealer to the US is seen by Russia as political and made under pressure. US wants Bout on charges of terrorism and supplying arms to Colombian rebels, which he denies. Kent Goodman, publisher and author says Bout is being extradited because he posed a direct threat to American business in Africa.

[Global Weapons Ban] Drop Your Weapon: Hillary Clinton Jumpstarts UN Arms Ban, Treaty Back On Track

(Links Below) US agrees to time-table for UN Gun Ban... The United Nations and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton are moving forward with their plan to confiscate your guns. The United States joined 152 other countries in support of the Arms Trade Treaty Resolution, which establishes the dates for the 2012 UN conference intended to attack American sovereignty by stripping Americans of the right to keep and bear arms. While everyone was watching the oil spill, the UN Small Arms Treaty came back, potentially leading to an effective ban on all privately held semi-automatic weapons in America. By way of treaty, our 2nd Amendment is in danger, meaning that the normal legislative process is consequently circumvented. but there will be little debate and even less media coverage. This treaty represents the start of a slippery slope toward mandatory private gun registration which can lead to an attempt at confiscation. Give up your gun or face prison... ...That is certainly NOT what our founding fathers intended and it is our duty as a vigilant nation to stop this before it gets out of hand. Make no mistake, this treaty is not about illegal weapons, it's about making them illegal. Here is the article - judge for yourself: www.reuters.com ..We have to do everything possible to stop this. Nazemroaya: West Funnels Illegal Weapons Into Libya

France has been among the main powers behind the NATO-led air campaign, which is officially aimed at protecting civilians from assaults by Gaddafi's forces. However, many view a change of regime in Libya as the main reason for the alliance's involvement there. France's latest move has invoked extensive criticism from Russia and the African Union, while China has indirectly objected to it. The sending of arms to the Libyan rebels is illegal, yet it has been going on almost since the beginning of the conflict there, believes Mahdi Darius Nazemroaya from the Centre for Research on Globalization. "It definitely is violating the United Nations' sanction as well as international law. There is something called the ATT [the Arms Trade Treaty] and under the ATT they cannot supply arms to the rebels," he said. "This is not new news either. They have been saying it from March that they have been sending arms to the rebels. In the London conference, the Prime Minister of Qatar said they were going to send arms. He said that in front of Hillary Clinton and all the representatives of the NATO states were there." "Reuters and the Wall Street Journal -- they all said that the United States was sending arms through Egypt to the rebels. It is reported, it is documented," Mahdi Darius Nazemroaya added. Iran-Contra Hearings Day 24: Oliver North Testimony Part 2 (1987)

July 8, 1987 www.amazon.com Watch the full testimony: thefilmarchived.blogspot.com The arms industry is a global industry and business which manufactures and sells weapons and military technology and equipment. Arms producing companies, also referred to as defence companies or military industry, produce arms mainly for the armed forces of states. Products include guns, ammunition, missiles, military aircraft, military vehicles, ships, electronic systems, and more. The arms industry also conducts significant research and development. It is estimated that yearly, over 1 trillion dollars are spent on military expenditures worldwide (2% of World GDP). Part of this goes to the procurement of military hardware and services from the military industry. The combined arms sales of the top 100 largest arms producing companies amounted to an estimated $315 billion in 2006. In 2004 over $30 billion were spent in the international arms trade (a figure that excludes domestic sales of arms). The arms trade has also been one of the sectors impacted by the credit crunch, with total deal value in the market halving from US$32.9bn to US$14.3bn in 2008. Many industrialized countries have a domestic arms industry to supply their own military forces. Some countries also have a substantial legal or illegal domestic trade in weapons for use by its citizens. The illegal trade in small arms is prevalent in many countries and regions affected by political instability. Contracts to supply a given ...
