The FDA said Wednesday that a new study by the agency shows that an ingredient in chicken feed that contains arsenic, called Roxarsone, may make its way into parts of the bird that are eaten. Previous studies have indicated the arsenic was eliminated with chicken waste. Pfizer, which makes the feed ingredient, said Wednesday that it will pull it off the market in the United States. The FDA said it would be banned because it is a carcinogen. Thanks to private donations from ordinary folk, we helped 55 extremely poor families in Dec 2008 with special filters which remove arsenic from drinking water. Arsenic posioning, arsenicosis, often leads to death from multi-organ damage depending on the severity of the poisoning,duration, and on the person's strength of their immune system. Poor folk, who can barely afford to eat regularly, seem to be the worst affected. Its possible wealthier people can afford to take preventative measures while the poor cannot. Seeing is believing, hence this video so perhaps you can see how it creates orphans and affects people too poor to seek treatment. We interviwed many who have family members who have died. Outward symptoms from what we witnessed are usually skin discolouration, followed by extremely rough hands and feet, lesions and ulcers, and gangrene. Some patients swell up before death and complain of lethargy and other ailments, we are told. Contains graphic medical footage and personal interviews with some families we helped. These filters will last between 5 to 8 years. It might save lives, and at the very least , it should halt the illness. We plan on doing regular safe water projects like this every few months. Veteran Los Angeles coroner forensic technican Michael Cormier had died, apparently due to arsenic poisoning. The 61 year old Cormier was discovered dead on April 20th - the same day the city officials had released their preliminary autopsy report on the death of conservative media powerhouse Andrew Breitbart. According to early reports, Michael Cormier was "seemingly healthy," yet "suddenly stricken" with a fatal condition -- just like Andrew Breitbart. It's the latest twist in the case of Andrew Breitbart's untimely death that will surely fuel increased speculation into possible foul play - in both cases. The sluggish release of the Breitbart autopsy follows the unorthodox, rushed announcement by city authorities at the time of Breitbart's death that he had died of 'natural causes' on March 1, 2012 at the age of 43. The timing of Breitbart's death came on the eve of a few highly anticipated events. Firstly, he had announced that he would be releasing rare 'game changing', rather damning video footage of President Obama allegedly cavorting with communist activists years earlier. Hand pumps have been promoted by aid agencies and the government for the past 20 years. The world had helped Bangladesh solve its problem of diseased water, in a country where millions used to die from water-borne diseases. But now evidence suggests it contains arsenic, which is killing Bangladeshis. In Kutubpur, villager Garribukler has 35 times the safe level of arsenic. His hair and skin samples are analysed with chilling results. Doctor Roy says he's likely to get cancer due to the arsenic in his skin. Other villagers show the stone-like beads covering their bodies, a sign of poisoning. Bangladeshis face a nightmarish dilemma, partly of the international aid agencies' making: to drink polluted water or risk a slow, painful death by arsenic poisoning. Public Lecture—Arsenic: The Silent Killer
Lecture Date: Tuesday, February 28, 2006. Andrea Foster uses x-rays to determine the forms of potentially toxic elements in environmentally-important matrices such as water, sediments, plants, and microorganisms. In this free public lecture, Foster will discuss her research on arsenic, which is called the silent killer because dissolved in water, it is colorless, odorless, and tasteless, yet consumption of relatively small doses of this element in its most toxic forms can cause rapid and violent death. Arsenic is a well-known poison, and has been used as such since ancient times. Less well known is the fact that much lower doses of the element, consumed over years, can lead to a variety of skin and internal cancers that can also be fatal. Currently, what has been called the largest mass poisoning in history is occurring in Bangladesh, where most people are by necessity drinking ground water that is contaminated with arsenic far in excess of the maximum amounts determined to be safe by the World Health Organization. This presentation will review the long and complicated history with arsenic, describe how x-rays have helped explain the high yet spatially variable arsenic concentrations in Bangladesh, discuss the ways in which land use in Bangladesh may be exacerbating the problem, and summarize the impact of this silent killer on drinking water systems worldwide.
