The recent £135million (US$200million) contract win to provide the Swedish and Norwegian armed forces with 48 Archer 155mm artillery systems and ammunition is the latest in a series of contract wins and delivery successes for BAE Systems global land business. The announcement follows a £100million development programme which began in 2003 and will see the first vehicles enter service in late 2011. The Archer contract reflects another recent success for BAE Systems when the CTA weapon system, developed in partnership with French defence company Nexter, was mandated for the British Army's FRES and Warrior programmes. Across the Atlantic the company has also been selected to provide its Check-6 infrared camera to more than 2300 US Army all terrain M-ATV vehicles. Valued at around $45 million the contract will help to increase the safety of US soldiers as Check-6 enables them to view their surroundings, in either daylight or darkness and in adverse weather conditions, without leaving the vehicle. March also saw the delivery of final BvS10 Mk2 to the Royal Marines. The BvS10, known as Vikings in British Service, is the first armoured vehicle selected by the Royal Marines for more than 50 years. The Mk2 variant features greater mine resistance and protection and more power than its predecessor, key upgrades made in response to the operational requirements of the Marines. Their forces included 274 T-34-85 tanks, some 150 Yak fighters, 110 attack bombers, 200 artillery pieces, 78 Yak trainers, and 35 reconnaissance aircraft. In addition to the invasion force, the North Korean KPA had 114 fighters, 78 bombers, 105 T-34-85 tanks, and some 30000 soldiers stationed in reserve in North Korea. Although each navy consisted of only several small warships, the North Korean and South Korean navies fought in the war as sea-borne artillery for their in-country armies. In contrast, the ROK Army defenders were vastly unprepared, and the political establishment in the south, while well aware of the threat to the north, were unable to convince American administrators of the reality of the threat. In South to the Naktong, North to the Yalu (1961), RE Appleman reports the ROK forces' low combat readiness as of 25 June 1950. ARTHUR - Artillery Hunting Radar
ARTHUR is a military radar system originally developed by Ericsson Microwave Systems (now Saab Microwave Systems) in close cooperation with the Swedish Defence Material Administration and Norwegian Army Material Command. ARTHUR can operate as a stand-alone medium-range Weapons Locating Radar or a long-range weapon locating system, consisting of 2 to 4 radars working in coordination. This flexibility enables the system to maintain a constant surveillance of an area of interest on a complex battlefield. It detects hostile projectiles and calculates their points of origin with great accuracy and these positions are automatically relayed to friendly artillery units, which can then return fire. ARTHUR also tracks out-going projectiles from friendly artillery and calculates points of impact. The radar is capable of detecting and track very small targets such as mortar bombs in the presence of clutter and electronics countermeasures (ECM). With its low weight, small size and single vehicle configuration when mounted on a BV206, the system has high tactical and operational mobility and is capable of manoeuvering in the most difficult of terrain. In a demonstration in Hungary, ARTHUR was able to detect and locate the firing units for 500 assorted rockets, cannon shells, and mortar rounds. Excerpt from recently updated Operation Upshot-Knothole From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia en.wikipedia.org Picatinny Arsenal was tasked to create a nuclear capable artillery piece in 1949. Robert Schwartz, the engineer who created the preliminary designs, essentially scaled up the 240mm shell (then the maximum in the arsenal) and used the German K5 railroad gun as a point of departure for the carriage. (The name "Atomic Annie" likely derives from the nickname "Anzio Annie" given to a German K5 gun which was employed against the American landings in Italy.) The design was approved by the Pentagon, largely through the intervention of chief of the Ballistics Section of the Ordnance Department's Research and Development Division, Samuel Feltman, and a three-year developmental effort was begun. The project proceeded quickly enough to produce a demonstration model to participate in Dwight Eisenhower's inaugural parade in January of 1953. The cannon was transported by two specially designed tractors, both capable of independent steering in the manner of some extra-long fire engines. Each of the tractors was rated at 375 hp, and the somewhat awkward combination could achieve speeds of 35 miles an hour and negotiate right turns on 28 ft wide, paved or packed roads. Over 130000 tons of Soviet artillery was dropped on Nazi Germany and its forces, while the second largest amount artillery during the second world war is claimed by the UK at 16000 tons fired. It is no doubt that Russia is the pioneer of artillery as we know it. As Russian artillery evolved to fight an even greater war fantastic systems were created such as the Bm-27 "Uragan" and the 2s3 "Akatsia". Today Russia's artillery system is second to none with the worlds largest number of various systems totaling more than 15200 pieces. Closest competitor is China with 12000 pieces.

Fired as part of Operation Upshot-Knothole and codenamed Shot GRABLE, a 280 mm (11 inch) shell with a gun-type fission warhead was fired 10000 m (6.2 miles) and detonated 160 m (525 ft) above the ground with an estimated yield of 15 kilotons. This was the only nuclear artillery shell ever actually fired in the US test program. The shell was 1384 mm (4.5 ft) long and weighed 365 kg (805 lb); it was fired from a special artillery piece, nicknamed "Atomic Annie", built by the Artillery Test Unit of Fort Sill, Oklahoma. It was time to test his mechanical beast against the demonic hoards of the Hellbourne. They would know no quarter when he found them within range and death reigned down from above. The explosions deafened both man and beast, and Artillery stood alone among the craters and carnage. Artillery is a ranged, agility hero that excels in long-range combat. With Bunker down, his attack range exceeds a tower's reach. Long Range Missiles (LRM) scale with base damage, and do not propagate orb effects or attack modifiers, so items that increase base attack damage provide the most bang for Artillery. Ghost Marchers are the boots of choice for this construction, providing needed maneuverability as well as bonus damage. Since Bunker Down's mana cost is so little, and LRM is somewhat cheap, a Blood Chalice or Power Supply can provide all the mana necessary, letting Artillery focus on his offensive front. Fragmentation shells do not count as an orb effect, yet provide a potent slow, so Frostwolf Skull is not suggested, though Geometer's Bane is a great pickup for both damage and survivability. Savage Mace, Wingbow, and a Nullstone all work great with Artillery's play style. Charged Hammer greatly increases Artillery's damage output, but since LRM doesn't proc the lightning, it may not be as efficient as <b>...</b>

BONUS Artillery Launched Precision Guided Munitions
Bonus artillery launched, fire-and-forget artillery shell targets and destroys armored vehicles (stationary or mobile) by top attack submunitions. Each BONUS shell carries two BONUS Submunitions, and is provided with base bleed system to reach ranges of 35km. Two Submunitions are carried in each shell, covering an area of 200 m' in radius. The BONUS submunition deploys two "wings" which stabilize its rapid descent path and fast spin required for target scanning. BONUS acquires a target by multi-spectral infrared signature. BONUS II, which will enter production in 2005 will also add a laser radar (LADAR) for improved aiming into a target shape generated by a laser radar (LADAR) sensor. The fusion of spectral and target profile enables BONUS to separate between combat-worthy targets, damaged or burning targets as well as decoys. Each submunition is equipped with explosive formed penetrator (EFP) striking the target by top attack. BONUS II is equipped with improved IR sensors capable of engaging targets with reduced IR signatures and countermeasures. BONUS is in production since 2003. These Megabanger Exterminator artillery shells were purchased at Nite Lites in Kentucky. The case price is $117.50 and there are four boxes of 24 shells in each case. Each box is approximately $30.00. Nite Lites advertises these shells as coming from the same factory as the famed Excalibur shells. The first thing you notice is the weight of the shells. When you evaluate artillery shells the weight is a good indicator of how much composition is in the shells. More composition translates into better fireworks. Considering this is a consumer item it looks and sounds great. A friend of mine thinks these same artillery shells may also be marketed as Kiss of Death. They may also be marketed as Lock and Load at Phantom Fireworks. For those of you new to fireworks, I have a comparison here of a similar product sold at Phantom Fireworks. These products are the 1" Mini Canister Shells, 1 ¾" Artillery Shells, 2" Critical Acclaim, and the 2" Excalibur Shells. In order to give you an idea of the difference between these products, I fire at least one shell of each. The small 1" shells are not very impressive by themselves, but they are quite impressive when large quantities are stringed together. The 1 ¾" Artillery Shells are the most commonly found aerial shell. The Critical Acclaim has a very unique performance that is very impressive. Finally, the Excalibur Shells are simply the best.
