No end to exploitation of Balochistan's mineral wealth

Balochistan, January 31: Balochistan is rich in gold, copper, coal, uranium, oil & gas reserves. Unfortunately, the resource-rich province of Pakistan remains poor because of continuous exploitation by Islamabad. The wealth goes to foreign companies as Pakistan has been relying on them for surveys, exploration, mining and refining of mineral wealth. Reko Diq, a small desert town in Chagai district of Balochistan has gold and copper reserves worth 260 billion USD. Some 12.3m tons of copper and 20.9m ounces of gold lie in the Reko Diq area. The exploration work has been carried out by Tethyan Commper Company (Pvt.) Limited (TCC) -- a Canadian consortium. Now, TCC wants to take the raw material abroad for refining. This will benefit the company and lead to a massive loss for Balochistan.

The 'wealthy' Pakistani generals

Pakistan, February 28: Pakistan has had a turbulent history. And it remains in turmoil with growing internal instability and rising conflicts with its neighbours. Despite the return to civilian rule, the politics of the country has remained closely linked to the military, one of Pakistan's most powerful institutions. The generals while projecting their utility are virtually in control. Interestingly, while Pakistan suffers economic difficulties, frequent political crises and issues like unemployment, illiteracy and malnutrition, the top brass of the army is making huge amounts of money through the corporate sector and controls large tracts of real estate. The Audit General of Pakistan revealed that the army is using government land falling in A-1 category worth 1.4 billion USD (Rs. 120.767 billion) for commercial purposes.

The Baloch are united in the fight to win sovereignty

Balochistan, October 11: In early 2005 Islamabad invited disillusioned Baloch leaders for a dialogue. But, as expected the ruling civil-military establishment deceived them. And while the Baloch leaders were talking to a 12-member parliamentary committee on Balochistan, several hundred Baloch political activists went missing. Today the regime may have changed... but Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani continues to follow the same game plan and has urged Baloch nationalist leaders to hold talks with the government to clear existing grievances. The Gilani-Mengal summit has initiated what seems is an effort to create a division between the Mengals, who lead the biggest nationalist political party, and the Marris, who presumably head the armed struggle.

Protest against Pakistan's barbarism in Balochistan

London, August 08: The barbarism of Pakistani security agencies in Balochistan continues to infuriate the Baloch people. A Human Rights Watch report titled "We can Torture, Kill, or Keep You for Years': Enforced Disappearances by Pakistan Security Forces in Balochistan" exposes the fact that Pakistani agencies are responsible for widespread disappearances of Baloch political activists. The 32-page report slams Pakistan authorities for taking people into custody and then denying all responsibility or knowledge of their fate or whereabouts. The rights group investigated several cases in which uniformed personnel of the Frontier Corps, an Interior Ministry paramilitary force, and the police were involved in abducting Baloch nationalists.
