BXI by Boris & Ian Astbury (ALBUM REVIEW)
Released in 2010 on Southern Lord Records. Ian Ashtbury is the lead singer of The Cult. He was born in 1962 making him about 47 - 48(as of 2010). Boris is a multi faceted metal band from Japan. They are fucking awesome. I guess the story goes, these guess started hanging out when Ian asked Boris to open for them for a few shows. Then they played a song together ("The End" by The Doors) in Sydney, Australia. Somewhere around this time, they agreed to release an album together. BXI is probably Boris at their most restrained. They still lay down some killer riffs, rocking out like no one else can do, but you can't help but feel they are being held back by Ian. His over the top, theatrical style singing doesn't really do Boris any favors. Cult fans might love this, but I don't. Lyrics and singing seem a little phoned in and by the numbers. The only song I really enjoyed was "Rain" which features the female member of Boris (Wata) on vocals, which is always a treat. She has a very light, fragile tone about her. It's weird that I like this one because it's a Cult cover, but maybe it's just because Ian isn't on it. Anyways, I can't say"Boris, I am disappoint" here. They continue to, I assume, do whatever they hell they want and I will always respect that. They are a killer band. If they wanna collaborate with the lead singer of The Cult, then they can. Doesn't mean I have to like it. 5 / 10
