Scientists in Greece have reconstructed the face of an ancient Athenian girl, using the teeth and skull found in a mass grave. Named "Myrtis", the life size mannequin now forms part of an exhibition called "Face to Face with the Past." Greek scientists and archaeologists have given a face to an ancient Athenian girl from the 5th century BC The facial reconstruction process utilized the teeth and skull from her skeleton, discovered in a mass grave in 1995. The 11 year old girl, known as "Myrtis", died of typhoid fever during a plague in 430 BC Manolis Papagrigorakis, a professor and orthodontist from the University of Athens, worked with a team of 20 scientists on the project. [Manolis Papagrigorakis, Professor and Orthodontist]: (Greek) "We had all of the skull, the jaw, and the teeth, and something very rare - the milk teeth on the skull. These all helped us to be accurate with the final product, and we are very close - 95 percent close to reality with the final product." The scientists used a 3-D technological program called the "Manchester method" - from the University of Manchester - often used on Egyptian mummies, for the reconstruction process. As Athenian democracy progressed, it became embroiled in the clash of new ideas with old beliefs; Athens started to tear itself apart. The story culminates in one of history's greatest paradoxes: the trial of Socrates, who was democratically judged to be executed for speaking his mind. Democracy grew against the backdrop of a brutal war between democratic Athens and authoritarian Sparta. Still, Athens attracted great thinkers and scientists. Art and culture thrived. At exactly the same time that democracy was emerging, a new, more realistic style of sculpture flourished. Drama provided a structured way to express deep feelings and fears, as Athenians used the theater to debate their problems on stage. Outrageous story lines - sons and mothers making love, mothers eating their children - were presented and openly discussed. Theater at every level was a democratic institution; playwrights were chosen by the state and paid by the state. When Sparta finally defeated Athens, the citizens looked for a scapegoat. Socrates had ridiculed the idea of government by non-experts and had coached many of the arrogant aristocrats who had failed in battle. When Socrates was condemned for impiety and the corruption of youth, he refused to compromise in any way and rejected an offer of exile. He stood trial and was condemned to death by drinking poison. Potters added handles and mouths to molded clay parts, creating small numbers of nearly identical mass-produced vessels. He is remembered particularly for his efforts to legislate against political, economic and moral decline in archaic Athens. His reforms failed in the short term yet he is often credited with having laid the foundations for Athenian democracy.

My neighbors house on fire. I recorded video after calling 911. Fire started around 1 am This morning. Fire started in basement and luckily no one was injured. No one was home, place being renovated from news report. There were many fire trucks and police had both end of the streets blocked off from anyone other than fire department and EMS from getting through. Half of the house is destroyed by fire and I bet the rest by water and smoke damage.

This is a suite of six Greek folk tunes from Athens, adapted and arranged for mandolin by Victor Kioulaphides. Victor's notes say: "This volume contains late 19th - early 20th century 'cantades', popular songs that were sung by strolling musicians in the narrow streets of Plaka, the old picturesque city around the Parthenon." The individual tunes are (as given in Victor's score; I don't have their Greek names): 1. I Shook the Blooming Almond-Tree 2. With a Little Guitar 3. In the Narrow Streets of Plaka 4. Let Your Hair Loose 5. Which One to Pick? 6. The Girl With the Golden Cross The penultimate tune plainly incorporates the chorus from "La Petite Tonkinoise", which by coincidence I also have up on Youtube -- clearly popular songs from outside Greece found their way into the folklore in Athens. I have tried to keep the playing loose and informal, in keeping with the folkloristic nature of the material. Many thanks to Victor for this inspiring music, and apologies for my copious mistakes (my playing in 7/8 time is shockingly erratic without the guitar part to keep me straight...).
