Veronica Guerin(Field's of Athenry)

This is one of the best version's of the fields of athenry i have heard it's from the movie Veronica Guerin i have added some pic's from the movie and there's a couple of photo's of the real Veronica. RIP You will alway's be remembered Veronica Guerin was shot dead by irish drug dealer's On June 26, 1996, while Guerin was sitting in her red Opel Calibra at an intersection on the Naas Dual Carriageway, a few miles outside Dublin, one of two men sitting on a motorcycle beside her car fatally shot her five times. Guerin's murder caused outrage, and Taoiseach John Bruton called it "an attack on democracy". The following criminal investigation led to over 150 arrests and a hunt against Irish organised criminal gangs.
Fields of Athenry

"Sir Charles Trevelyan was secy of the treasury for Irish relief. When the potato failed, he said it was God's punishment of the Irish and 'an opportunity to clear the land of surplus population'. He exported Irish grain (on the same ships as fleeing peasants) for the 'free market'. Trevelyan's relief corn was inedible. His cold heartedness is believed to have increased Irish deaths. No country infested by the potato blight had death on such a scale." patpol2007 Fields of Athenry By a lonely prison wall, I heard a young girl calling "Michael, they have taken you away, For you stole Trevelyan's corn, So the young might see the morn. Now a prison ship lies waiting in the bay." Chorus: Low lie the fields of Athenry Where once we watched the small free birds fly Our love was on the wing We had dreams and songs to sing It's so lonely round the fields of Athenry. By a lonely prison wall, I heard a young man calling "Nothing matters, Mary, when you're free Against the famine and the crown, I rebelled, they cut me down. Now you must raise our child with dignity." By a lonely harbor wall, she watched the last star fall As the prison ship sailed out against the sky For she lived to hope and pray for her love in Botany Bay It's so lonely round the fields of Athenry.

The Fields Of Athenry (Acapella)

This request goes to comrabure :) This is one of my all time favorite traditional Irish folk songs. My favorite versions are by the Dubliners and by Johnny McEvoy. I had no instrumental backing for this song, so I just sang acapella. If anyone out there has an instrumental for this song PLEASE send it to me :) "The Fields of Athenry" is a folk song about the Great Irish Famine (1845-1849), composed in the 1970s by Inchicore songwriter Pete St. John and first recorded by Irish ballad singer Danny Doyle. It tells the story of the famine through first-person narrative, recounting the tale of a prisoner who has been sentenced to being transported to Botany Bay, Australia, for stealing food to feed his starving family. -Wikipedia:Copyrights This song always reminds me of Les Miserables when Jean Valjean steals a loaf of bread to feed his family and is arrested. Poor Michael just stole some corn to keep his family alive.

DKM - Fields of Athenry [Ballad] (Sgt. Farrar Tribute)

A video I made for Dropkick Murphy's ballad rendition of The Fields of Athenry. It's a tribute version, done for a soldier that died in Iraq. Info: This is a ballad version of the song so its slower than the original DKM version. It's slightly modified as a dedication for a soldier who died in Iraq. Sgt. Andrew Farrar (the soldier) was a long time Dropkick Murphy's fan whose last wish, in a letter he wrote to his wife, was that DKM play the "Fields of Athenry" at his funeral if he died in combat. DKM accepted his request and played it while his coffin was being carried into the church. You can read more about it here: www.dropkickmurphys.com

Shebeen - Fields Of Athenry (Garvaghy Road) !

just-imagine-if.blogspot.com Drumcree Church is the parish church of Drumcree, a rural Church of Ireland parish to the north of Portadown in County Armagh, Northern Ireland. In recent times it has become noted for the Orange Order service held annually on the Sunday before 12 July. The service, or more precisely the Orangemen's parade both to and from the service and the reaction of the community on Garvaghy Road, has been the catalyst for sectarian unrest between the Protestant paraders and the Catholic residents of the area. This version of the Fields of Athenry tells how the Orange scum WILL NEVER MARCH DOWN GARVAGHY ROAD EVER !!!! On a lonely Drumcree hill Ten thousand Orangemen are waiting. They want to walk the streets of Portadown Their sashes and their flutes Their bowler hats and suits But they'll not be marching down Garvaghy Road Low lie the fields of Athenry Where once we watched the small free birds fly. "Hey baby let the free birds fly!" It's plain for us to see Take your tents up to Drumcree Because you'll not be marching down Garvaghy Road By a lonely prison wall I heard a young girl calling Michael they are taking you away. For you stole Trevelyn's corn So the young might see the morn But they'll still not be marching down Garvaghy Road Low lie the fields of Athenry Where once we watched the small free birds fly. In English and in Hungarian : "The Fields of Athenry" is an Irish folk ballad set during the Great Irish Famine (1845-1850) about a fictional man named Michael from near Athenry in County Galway who has been sentenced to transportation to Botany Bay, Australia, for stealing food for his starving family. This song about his love and his lonely on the fields of Athenry. "The Fields of Athenry" egy ír nép ballada, a nagy ír éhínség idejéből (1845-1850), amikor milliók haltak éhen Írországban. A Michael-ról szól a dal, aki élelmet lopott a családjának. Lyrics: " By a lonely prison wall I heard a young girl calling Michael they are taking you away For you stole Trevelyn's corn So the young might see the morn. Fields of Athenry

Fields of Athenry was written by Pete St. John who can be found "alive and well" at petestjohn.com. "Trevelyan's corn" was field (feed) corn donated by the US in the midst of the hunger years of 1845 to 1850. Lord Trevelyan believed that giving the corn to the starving of Ireland would make them dependent on welfare so he made the corn available for purchase only.
