Aurora Borealis viewed from the Chippewa National Forest north of Grand Rapids, MN on the evening of February 18, 2012. The last segment was taken on Trout Lake near Bovey, MN. I used Canon 5d Mk II, 24mm f1.4 lens, and 16-35mm f2.8 zoom lens with exposures ranging from 6 seconds to 20 seconds. The auroral event came from a coronal high speed stream with a southward-pointing magnetic field. The ensuing geomagnetic storm reached minor levels with Kp=5 at its peak, when the auroral oval was directly overhead at latitude 47 degrees N.

At noon Mountain Standard Time on October 24, 2011, a coronal mass ejection from the Sun hit the Earth, strongly compressing its magnetic field and sparking an intense geomagnetic storm, reaching a peak planetary K index of 7. By the time dark had fallen enough here to see the aurora, the K index had fallen to 6, though still classified as "storm level". The result was a spectacular display, including red, as well as exceedingly rare blue and purple aurorae. This time-lapse movie was made from 239 individual photos, taken between 7:55 and 8:32 pm, local time, in Legal, Alberta, Canada (the times listed in the video were accidentally off by an hour). It is sped up by a factor of approximately 10. Incidentally, each of those 239 photos were taken manually. Next time, it would be great to have rigged up something to automate the process. Note #1: For those who like skipping ahead, the best bit starts at about 40 seconds into the movie. Note #2: No modifications to hue, saturation, or other Photoshop magic was applied to these photos. This visually stunning explanatory video takes you on a journey from sun's interior to the Earth's upper atmosphere. Auroral observations over the last 100 years reveal that peak periods of aurora occur close to the equinoxes-that is, during the months of March and April, and again September and October. Of the two yearly peaks, the greater peak of auroral events occurs during October. However, some of the strongest levels of geomagnetic storms are in the spring. The minimum activity yearly occurs during the months of June and July, with a lesser minimum during December. Aurora is a direct result of solar plasma interacting with gasses in the upper atmosphere. Geomagnetic storms develop when strong gusts of solar wind and coronal mass ejections (CMEs) "hit" the Earth's magnetosphere in just the right way. The magnetosphere is filled with electrons and protons that are normally trapped by lines of magnetic force that prevent them from escaping to space or descending to the planet below. The impact of a CME breaks loose some of those trapped particles, causing them to rain down on the atmosphere. Gasses in the atmosphere start to glow under the impact of these particles. Anyway, this was my first video project. It is a timelapse video of the Northern Lights. All sequences are shot in or close to Tromsø in Northern Norway. I spent over 6months collecting footage for this, I shot approx 50.000 stills to choose from in making this video. A goal for me has been to try to preserve the real-time speed of the northern lights, or come as close as possible, and present it the way I experienced it, instead of the northern lights just flashing over the sky in the blink of an eye. It may work on other time-lapse videos with fast moving clouds and sunsets etc, but with the northern lights in focus, it should be presented in it's true speed to reflect her beauty, imo. In the video I have put together a collection of slow moving auroras in the woods, over the mounatins, in the city, in the foreshore, reflected in the sea, with some of the most spectacular and strongest auroral outbreaks seen in many years. Included here is a coronal outbreak, in which I am particularly happy to present, since it is very difficult to get on stills, even worse on "film".
