Italy passes austerity package

Italy's lower house of parliament has approved a three year, $67bn austerity package in a rushed vote to try to calm the financial market storm which has sent Italian borrowing costs soaring. Al Jazeera's Sonia Gallego reports from Rome.
Vote called on Italian austerity package

www.euronews.net Italy's government has called a confidence vote in parliament to speed up the approval of a 33-billion euro austerity package. Italian Prime Minister Mario Monti believes the package will restore market confidence in the euro zone's third largest economy. The plans were booed and jeered by the Northern League in Italy's upper house of Parliament on Wednesday, as they held up placards saying "This is not a budget, but a hold-up." They tried to stop the confidence vote in the chamber but they were cut short by the speaker.
Senate protest fails to prevent austerity package vote

www.euronews.net "A government of thieves" read a banner as Italian opposition senators tried to disrupt proceedings in the upper house. The noisy protest was triggered by the country's new technocrat government calling for a final vote of confidence on its austerity measures. Despite the opposition the package is expected to pass easily later today.

Italy unions call strikes following austerity package

www.euronews.net Italy's Prime Minister Mario Monti has said the country would have suffered a crisis like Greece if a tough austerity package had not been introduced. The measures were hashed out during an emergency cabinet meeting on Sunday and presented to parliament on Monday. "The austerity, which is calling for sacrifices from our country, is fundamental for social fairness and, at the same time, is a launching pad for development. The events of the last months prove that our country's and Europe's destinies are strongly connected," Monti told parliament.
Age of Austerity: Italy town rebels against Rome, wants own currency

Italy's much-disputed 54-billion-Euro austerity package to slash the country's crippling debt will go through a final debate at the lower house of Parliament on Monday. It would increase taxes and cut government spending to balance the budget by 2013. But constant changes to the plan and squabbling between lawmakers has damaged people's faith in it. And as Ivor Bennett reports, there's a town that's decided it doesn't want to wait for the cuts. RT on Twitter: twitter.com RT on Facebook: www.facebook.com

Police Clash With Protesters As Greek 'Austerity Package' Passes

LiveLeak.com - In a tight vote Greece's legislature approved a plan of austerity that will enable the debt-riddled country to receive the next tranche of bailout funds and avoid a default, for now. Amid clashes between protestors and police outside government buildings, the Greek Parliament passed Prime Minister George Papandreou's package of budget cuts and taxes, a positive development but merely a first step. While the deal buys a bit more time for Greece to sort out its issues, it does little to address the fact that the country is not growing anywhere near fast enough to repay bondholders without receiving aid from the EU, IMF and ECB for the foreseeable future. The final tally showed 155 votes for the austerity program, 138 against and 7 abstentions. Yesterday, Bank of America Merrill Lynch currency strategist Paresh Upadhyaya compared the goings-on in Greece to the movie Groundhog Day, his way of arguing that the issues are going to be revisited time and time again. European leaders certainly do not seem to have the stomach for a Greek restructuring, largely because their own banks are at risk. France has expressed a willingness for its banks to roll over their Greek debt holdings, and Germany is also coming around to the idea. Markets in Europe were higher, with German and UK indexes up better than 1% after the Greek vote, though the agreement was likely largely priced in. It remains to be seen what will happen Thursday, when lawmakers are due to vote on the ...

Eurogroup Chief Juncker: Greek austerity package 'absolutely necessary'

Jean-Claude Juncker, President of the 16 countries that have adopted the euro as their single currency, on Sunday said that the measures tabled by the Greek government to stave off further increase in the government's debt are "absolutely necessary." Speaking in French at a press conference that followed Sunday's meeting in Brussels of EU finance ministers, Juncker said that the package seeks to restore the Greek deficit to 3 percent of GDP by the year 2014. Because of the package, the Greek deficit is seen at about 11 percent of GDP between 2010 and 2014, compared to projections of 13 percent before the package was announced.

Hartmann: Eurozone catastrophe...will there be blood on the streets?

Kenneth Levin, Manhattan Community College at CUNY joins Thom Hartmann. It looks like civil unrest and economic destruction are about to be exported from Greece to Italy. The new bankster-run government formed in the wake of Silvio Berlusconi's resignation has approved a new austerity package that will raise the retirement age of all Italians - and let inflation destroy their pensions. The austerity measures also target government spending and dissolve several government programs. These spending cuts are so painful that the Minister of Labour and Welfare, Elsa Fornero, broke down in tears while she was announcing them during a press conference. Is this the beginning of the newest European empire - and a backdoor way of saying that Germany is now in the process of winning World War II?

Birmingham Demo Against Conservative Party Conference and the Con-Dem Austerity Package

The Tory Party Conference opened today the 3rd October 2010 in Birmingham. The Right To Work Coalition organised a very successful counter demonstration of resisters to the IMF cuts, Cameron has been chosen to implement by his puppetmasters in Washington. Today was supposed to be Cameron's "coronation" as Tory leader and job-share leader of the British coalition Government. This government of multi-millionaires are attempting to push through a savage attack on the living standards of the people of the UK ...they are complete Scum! Cameron himself has a family fortune of more than £30 million He is a descendant of King William IV and his mistress Dorothea Jordan. He comes from a long line of whore's and bastards and is of course a whore to the IMF himself David Cameron's dodgy great-great grandfather Sir Ewen Cameron helped the Rothschilds sell war bonds during the Russo-Japanese war....the whole family are scum and have always been so. The Oxford-educated old Etonian Tory politician is fifth cousin twice removed of the British Queen, Elizabeth II...... according to the genealogists. And he and his multi-millionaire cabinet want to preside over the destruction of Britain's welfare state. He will not be allowed to carry through that IMF agenda, we will bring down the Con-Dem government...a class war is developing that will usher in the most radical developments since the English Civil Wars of the 17th century. The town of Filettino has started printing its own currency

As Italian lawmakers continue to debate a 54-billion-euro austerity package, more and more people are losing faith in its efficacy. Some are even trying to introduce own currency to avoid economic woes. Italy's much-disputed austerity package to slash the country's crippling debt will go through a final debate at the lower house of Parliament on Monday. It would increase taxes and cut government spending to balance the budget by 2013. However, there is one town in Italy that has decided it does not want to wait for the cuts. The town of Filettino in the middle of the country also claims to be an independent principality. To prove it, it has even started printing its own money -- the "fiorito". The new banknotes are featuring the image of the town mayor Luca Sellari, who is now a self-proclaimed prince. "I guess everyone dreams of being a prince when they're a little boy, and so did I. Now I get to live that dream," he says. Filettino is going solo in protest over government plans to slash council funding. Rome wants small towns to merge, halving the number of local authorities. With a population of just 600, Filettino and its mayor are for the chop. "It's a terrible idea because it makes no economic sense. We have everything here to be autonomous, and besides, our neighboring towns are at least 30km away, so it's not practically possible. It wouldn't even save that much money. Most regional administrations do nothing, they should get rid of them instead," Sellari claims ...
Italy's Monti Lays Out "Grow Italy" Scheme

The scheme follows last week's "Save Italy" austerity package. Italian Prime Minister Mario Monti said on Thursday that his government plans to present a broad package of liberalisation, welfare and labor-market reforms by the end of January. The aim is to boost growth. The passage of the massive "Save Italy" austerity package last week was the first duty of his government, Monti told reporters in an end-year press conference. The second act is to be a "Grow Italy" package aimed at making one of the euro zone's most chronically sluggish economies more competitive. [Mario Monti, Prime Minister of Italy]: "The problems that the markets have today are primarily problems of a European nature, and therefore a common solution needs to be found, one that is unified and firm. This solution could not even have begun to have been found within Europe, the responsible authority, if Italy - the third-largest economy within Europe - had not got its public accounts under control." Monti told Italians they should be "relieved" that the spread between the German and Italian 10-year benchmark bonds narrowed from a peak in November even as the European Central Bank (ECB) decreased its buying on the secondary market. Ousted by Austerity: Vote on cuts sees Berlusconi exit

In Italy, the race is on to form a new 'caretaker' government to pull the country back from a financial abyss. This follows the resignation of Silivo Berlusconi, who stepped down on Saturday having ruled the country as Prime Minister for 17 years. News of his departure was met with cheers and street festivities in central Rome. Former EU commissioner, Mario Monti, is considered a top contender to replace Berlusconi. The new government will be tasked with implementing an austerity package totalling almost 60 billion euros, aimed at tackling the nation's towering debt. Italy's Monti wins austerity confidence vote

www.euronews.net Italy's new government has won a parliamentary confidence vote on its anti-crisis austerity package. The lower house, as expected, overwhelmingly approved Prime Minister Mario Monti's tax increases, spending cuts and pension reforms. The Senate is also set to back the plan by Christmas. But public transport workers are not so keen. On Friday they brought buses, trains and underground services to a standstill nationwide to protest moves they say hit ordinary Italians and spare the rich.

They're angry over the government's plan to introduce more economic measures that will affect Greek's standard of living. The protesters feel they're paying the price for Greece's debt crisis instead of corrupt politicians. As the night drew on, protesters continued to crowd into the Greek capital's central square on Sunday. They're angry and afraid that the government's plan for more cost cutting will affect working Greeks. The nightly protests, now into their 19th day, have taken on a festive, peaceful atmosphere but full of criticism of the government's economic policies. Debate on a new package of measures begins in parliament next week. The package will include more taxes and more state spending cuts. It is the second round of measures since 2010, when taxes were raised and wages and pensions were cut. Greece has failed to meet fiscal targets under the 110 billion euro bailout by the European Union (EU) and International Monetary Fund (IMF). So now the Socialist government is trying to reduce the deficit quickly to avoid default. The measures have sparked the daily protests and caused the party of Prime Minister George Papandreou to fall behind the conservative opposition in opinion polls.
