Naomi Wolf Celebrated Author of "The End of America"

Fascinating interview with renowned author Naomi Wolf, perhaps best known for her early 1990s feminist classic "The Beauty Myth", considered by many to be one of the most important works of the 20th century. Wolf discusses her new book "The End of America", already on the New York Times bestseller list. The book identifies ten classic steps common to all dictatorships -- including those of Mussolini, Hitler and Stalin. Alarmingly, Wolf makes the case that each of these ten steps is occurring in post 9/11 America today. The book is a call to action for young and concerned Americans and this interview intimately frames this important discussion.

Jane Smiley: Author of The Man Who Invented the Computer

[Recorded: January 27, 2011] One night in the late 1930s, in a bar on the Iowa-Illinois border, John Vincent Atanasoff, a professor of physics at Iowa State University, after a frustrating day in his lab performing tedious mathematical calculations, hit on a revolutionary idea. He realized that the binary number system and electronic switches, combined with an array of capacitors on a moving drum to serve as memory, could yield a computing machine that would make his life and the lives of other similarly burdened scientists easier. Then he went back and built the machine. It worked. The whole world changed. Why don't we know the name of John Atanasoff as well as we know those of other computer pioneers like Alan Turing and John von Neumann? Atanasoff never secured a patent for his early device, and a number of the concepts he pioneered were incorporated into the breakthrough ENIAC computer that evolved into the legendary UNIVAC. But in 1973 a court declared that the patent on the Sperry Rand UNIVAC was invalid, opening the intellectual property gates to the computer revolution. In this lecture, Pulitzer Prize winning novelist Jane Smiley discusses the fascinating man who beat the world's greatest minds in the quest to develop the first true digital computing machine.

So You Want to Write? One Author's Perspective

What does it take to get started as an author? Science fiction author David Brin (The Postman, Startide Rising) offers advice to aspiring writers. Storytelling is the only verified form of magic; the ability to form incantations in the listerner's mind, to have them envision imaginary worlds, to feel profound emotions. Brin tells you the key aspect of the relationship between a writer and the readers -- a sadomasochistic one! You want your readers to be so engaged with the text that they are unable to put the book down...even at the risk of being late for work or missing a class. The only way to gauge your progress is to seek criticism from readers. This is hard to do, but you must distribute your manuscript widely (beyond friends and family members) to see where people were bored or confused; to find where they found your characters' actions inconsistent or implausible. Getting feedback is the surest way to improve your work. For more information about David Brin, visit his website: www.davidbrin.com Twitter: twitter.com Facebook: www.facebook.com
