Alexander Rodchenko and the Russian Avant-garde
Alexander Rodchenko, the Russian avant-garde artist, abandoned painting in the early 1920s in favour of photography convinced it would better express the new visual and social realities emerging at that time. His experiments in photography and photo-collage influenced artists and photographers throughout the 20th century. This film by Michael Craig of Copernicus Films is a compilation of extracts from a larger documentary film about Rodchenko's search for new visual frontiers. Starring Nadia Sibirskaia as a French girl whose parents are murdered before her eyes; looking for love in the wrong place she becomes pregnant out of wedlock, is homeless and starving, and suddenly finds kindness in the most unlikely of places. After driving several hundred miles I was left with one overwhelming emotion: disappointment. I loved the sleek lines and the clever technology; the huge boot swallowed the largest load. But none of this could hide the car's Achilles heel: its engine. The 177bhp V6 petrol engine fitted to the E240 sounded harsh when pushed, performance felt moderate and after 800 miles it had averaged only 21mpg. But my reaction was out of step; almost universally the car was heaped with praise. And it was 18 months before my opinion was to change. This time I drove an E270 diesel. It was blessed with virtually identical power to the petrol car on paper but in reality the leap in torque produced a smooth wall of power that made the car genuinely fun to drive, and it also averaged close to 40mpg. At last I understood what everyone had been saying: this was quite possibly the best executive car money could buy. I also tried the more modestly priced E220 diesel with 150bhp. It still felt good, and the 3.2 litre E320 diesel with 204bhp was a real hoot. With these cars Mercedes proved that not only had diesel engine technology caught up with the petrol equivalents but actually eclipsed them. Hiroshima mon amour is an acclaimed 1959 drama film directed by French film director Alain Resnais, with a screenplay by Marguerite Duras. It is the documentation of an intensely personal conversation between a French-Japanese couple about memory and forgetfulness. It was a major catalyst for the Nouvelle Vague (French New Wave), making highly innovative use of miniature flashbacks to create a uniquely nonlinear storyline. The title literally translates from French to English as 'Hiroshima, My Love', though the film is almost always referred to by its original French title. The Avant-Garde - Yellow Beads (1967)
The Avant-Garde was an American psychedelic pop group formed by Chuck Woolery and Elkin "Bubba" Fowler in 1967. They released three singles on Columbia Records in 1967 and 1968, backed by different session musicians on each release: "Yellow Beads", "Naturally Stoned" (which hit #40 on the Billboard Hot 100 charts in mid 1968)[1], and "Fly With Me". Despite the success of "Naturally Stoned", the group disbanded after "Fly With Me" and never released a full album. After The Avant-Garde, Fowler went on to a career as a folk singer. Columbia released his LP And Then Came Bubba in 1970, and he played guitar on albums by Bob Dylan and Leonard Cohen. Woolery became a country music artist on Warner Bros. Records and later Epic Records, charting twice but never releasing an album.[2] He has since become a game show host, appearing on Wheel of Fortune, Scrabble, Love Connection, Greed, and Lingo. "Naturally Stoned" was also used as the theme to a short-lived reality television series on GSN that starred Woolery, entitled Chuck Woolery: Naturally Stoned.[1] 2. This band is best known for Naturally Stoned which hit the Billboard chart at No. 40. and is best described as orchestrated 'psychedelic pop' (the lyrics may be psychedelic but the music is pop) with the backing sounding like a James Bond-type movie theme. It is the flip side which has been compiled however: Honey and Gall resurfacing on Psychedelic Unknowns Vol. 8 (LP & CD) and being an unusual and captivating hippie <b>...</b>

"Ogonyok" by El Lissitzky - Russian Avant-Garde
The Printing plant of "Ogonyok" magazine designed by El Lissitzky is likely to be the only extant building based on the blueprints of this master. Located at 55°46′38″N 37°36′39″E / 55.777277°N 37.610828°E / 55.777277; 37.610828 17, 1st Samotechny Lane, it is Lissitzky's sole tangible work of architecture. It was commissioned in 1932 by Ogonyok magazine to be used as a print shop. In June 2007 the independent Russky Avangard foundation filed a request to list the building on the heritage register. In September 2007 the city commission (Moskomnasledie) approved the request and passed it to the city government for a final approval, which did not happen. In October 2008, the abandoned building was badly damaged by fire. But next door developer "Inteco" has started preparations for construction of a new block of flats for the Film- Makers Union.
