Andrew Zuckerman photographs birds at the National Aviary for his new book, Bird.

At your house, attached to a back portion, is a canary aviary that has upwards of 50 canaries that sing such lovely moning songs and all during the day. They are breendig every year and their numbers do increase all the time. Care for the aviary is minimal, but we have to vaccinate them every year and keep ticks and mosquitoes in check.

Like a mad scientist's hot toddy, the Rooibos is a mix of Rooibos tea, lemon peel, orange peel, almond, vanilla, lemon verbena, mint, saffron, lavender, peppercorn, cardamom, Hendrick's gin, Luxardo maraschino liqueur, citric acid, simple syrup, and water. A vac pot, which has an upper and a lower chamber is placed at the table, dry ingredients in the top chamber and wet in the bottom. And because playing with fire at a table full of booze has to be the most dangerously fun idea ever, a small gas burner is placed under the lower chamber to bring it to a boil. Once boiling, it forms a vacuum, drawing the liquid into the top chamber and is flash infused, turning a cheery orange and filling the air with citrus and aromatics. After a quick stir with a cinnamon stick the burner is turned off, the liquid drops back into the pot and the cocktail gets poured. It's redolent of citrus, with a solid herbal punch from the gin and a nice subtle spice underlying the whole thing. It's the perfect antidote for chilly spring evenings and as it cools it gets an almost old school orange candy flavor. Plus, it's far more fun to watch than anyone could expect, especially under dim lounge lighting.

These are custom showcases that can contain a shallow amount of water at the bottom of the case. This allows for easy cleaning at the end of the day as you rinse & flush the enclosure out. The water below contributes to humidity as well as bathing and drinking. The enclosures allow for proper flight that these birds need as well as a spectacular way of viewing them in their natural surroundings! Check this product out here: www.jworlds.net

This is my cockatiel aviary that currently holds 18 rescued birds from various situations. Some came in together, some individually, some were found, others had life threatening injuries and were nursed back to health. Each one has a story. The life span of one of these birds is 15-20 years. Something to keep in mind when selecting a pet bird. ;)

May I show you our self-made inside aviary? We built it for our adopted Linnies Henry & Christo. The two birdies live at Markus, the elder son of my husband Ludwig. I care for them the way I do for my own birds. We had a lot of fun - the Linnies too! It is little bit difficult for me to describe our work in English - but if you have some question, please ask me :-) Starring: Markus, Ludwig and the birdies Henry & Christo Directed by Monika Produced in Germany, Oktober 2007

I've always been attracted to aviaries since I was a kid and I've finally been able to make one. It makes a great addition to our home as it is very relaxing to just sit from a distance and watch these little birds fly about. Currently, we have societies, orange cheek waxbills, shafttails, and an indian silverbill who all get along fine. I wanted to put a waterfall in there but cleaning it would be a pain since the birds love to bathe in their water. I designed this so I wouldn't have to disturb the birds too often so I use either aspen, cedar, or pine shavings on the floor. I leave a thick pile of it, rake it every other day and then clean it out completely every few months. The food in the wild bird feeder lasts for weeks so the only chores I have to do are to replace the water and give them their veggies, worms, etc.

This finch aviary is located at northern Israel and it accommodates various Australian & African finches such as Gouldian Finch, Strawberry Finch, Parrot Finches, Grassfinch, Star Finch, Cordon Bleu, Orange-cheeked finch, Paradise-Whydah, Weavers and others.

This aviary contains all untame parakeets that people have surrendered to our rescue. Here they are able to live out their lives in one large flock. They are an extremely happy group and welcome in newcomers without incident. They are a joy to watch as they play and flutter around their environment.

trainedparrot.com?bid=40 I bought an outdoor aviary for my parrots. This video shows the complete assembly process. Why is the video 15 minutes long? Because there were so many defects and problems assembling the cage that it took 10 days before it was completed! This 8'x5' Suncatcher Aviary made by Cages By Design is one of the most problematic products I have ever encountered. Please click the link on top to read the full story and product review. If you are thinking of buying anything from Cages By Design, make sure you read my full article before you spend a fortune on one and regret it. I am really happy to have an aviary for my parrots and after all of the hard work and modification I had made, I am sure it will be a great aviary for them. However, I am quite disappointed what a terrible product it turned out to me. I wouldn't go so far as calling it a scam, but the fact that this company has no quality control standards and is oblivious to the problems with the product is undoubted. http Once again, here is the full story. It is quite long as is the video but it turns out to be quite humorous. Thanks for watching.

Grant Achatz and Craig Schoettler create a drink served "in the rocks," using a blast chiller to form hollow ice shapes. An old fashioned made with Buffalo Trace bourbon, demerara syrup and housemade orange bitters is injected into the hollow ice using a syringe. The customer uses a utensil to crack the ice and release the cocktail contained within.

July 15, 2008: Here is a little video I made while refilling the pond in the egret aviary at IBRRC. All wasn't so peaceful when I first entered, but after a few minutes the residents concluded I wasn't going to eat them. So they settled down to their usual routines of wading in the water, flying from perch to perch, eating, and pecking their neighbor. This aging aviary was beautifully restored this spring by Monte, one of our rehabilitation experts. A small pond was created, pots of plants were added (he took the plants from the marsh behind IBRRC), and two layers of netting were hung inside to protect the birds' beaks from the metal mesh of the cage and to give the birds some privacy. Large gravel was added (the aviary sits on the ground) so we could hose it down without creating mud puddles. There are shallow bowls filled with water and smelt (the water keeps the fish fresh and discourages ants). The other side of the aviary, which you don't see here, has large branches suspended with bungee cords. The idea is to mimic nature, so that after these birds are released, they won't be frightened when the tree branch they land on moves. These beautiful birds are snowy egrets and cattle egrets. To see part 2 of this video, showing the branches suspended by bungee cords, click here: www.youtube.com www.ibrrc.org

July 22, 2008: IBRRC has a very large (100 feet long) pelican aviary and spa, which also serves as a flight cage. Because we have so many birds right now, we have moved some other birds into the peli aviary. All of them get along just fine. At the far end are the two adult Double-crested Cormorants, who serve as role models for the baby cormorants which hatched in our incubator a few weeks ago. If you look very closely at the video, you'll see one of the black adult cormorants perched at the far end of the aviary. We have baby and juvenile Western Gulls. They are gray-brown and will turn white when they are adults. There are quite a few juvenile Brown Pelicans. They made it from Baja California but are very underweight. When they gain weight and demonstrate good flying skills, we'll release them into a flock of other pelicans. Hopefully, they will learn to be better fishermen. I filmed the clips around 6 PM, standing very quietly in one corner of the spa, so as not to disturb the birds. From this perspective, the two pools look small, but they are actually quite large. The birds seem to be enjoying themselves, preening, swimming, flying, eating, pooping.

Finally finished my outdoor aviaries for my lovebirds. They are all built from anodised aluminium and 4mm UV reflective PVC. There is a sealed concrete base with a drain on each flight. The guttering has a removeable filter inside and as rain water runs down the sloped roof, it travels through 2 pipes and into a hanging trough inside each cage. There's a guillotine-style window on each flight leading the the night quarters. Each night cage has a 3-pot swing feeder, sliding aluminium tray and multiple doors.

The Tracy Aviary is one of two aviaries in the country and of the two it's the largest. Over 400 different species of birds can be found here - all accessible by the Salt Lake Connect Pass
