Ethiopia - Gelada baboons
Hundreds of these rare animals can be seen right outside the Simien Lodge - the highest hotel in Africa. The Simien mountains, and the entire National Park is one of the most extraordinarily beautiful places on the planet. Wonderful treks and the opportunity to come really close to these fascinating vegetarian animals; the males have a mane almost like a lion, and both males and females have red chests. They live in large family groups of up to a hundred, and move down from the warm uplands to caves on the escarpment when it gets cold at night.

Leopard Slays Its Most Feared Enemy The Baboon
A particularly poignant and unexpected chapter occurs as Legadema nears the cusp of adulthood and kills a mother baboon only to find the young baby still clinging. To the Jouberts' amazement, instead of killing the baby baboon, Legadema lies down protectively around it and even gently lifts it to safety at the approach of a scavenging hyena. "It was as if nature had turned on its head completely," says Dereck Joubert, a filmmaker who followed Legadema for three-and-a-half years in her natural habitat, the Okavango Delta of Botswana - the verdant flood plains known as Africa's Garden of Eden." "She had killed the mother primate, but then found this live new-born on the ground. The little baboon called out, and we thought we were going to hear a major crunch and the leopard smacking its lips, but instead the baby baboon put its paws out and walked towards the young leopard." "Legadema paused for a moment, apparently not knowing what to do. Then she gently picked it up in her mouth, holding it by the scruff of its neck and carrying the infant up a tree to keep it safe." Africa is so good at divulging little secrets, just when we think that we know it all so well. There are many myths and legends dancing around these ancient forests, where the Owls call your name and the distant Hippos speak to the gods. Staring Through the Eyes of War The greatest factor that is likely to have influenced our wildlife is the uncontrolled manner in which agriculture and forestry has changed natural habitats. Competition with "livestock" for food, cultivation, overgrazing, the persecution of perceived "problem animals", and soil erosion are some of the factors that have contributed ot the decline of healthy wild populations. The lure of vegetable and fruit crops against the backdrop of a shrinking natural habitat has resulted in a severe war on diminishing primate populations and irreparably damaged troop structures. Crop farming harms species such as porcupine, bushpigs, bushbuck and other vegetarian and omnivorous mammal populations too. Some nine years ago, when I first moved to the Garden Route, after establishing a baboon sanctuary in the Magaliesberg, I decided not to continue rehabilitating and rescuing non-human indigenous primates. My reasons had much to do with what had occurred on the sanctuary, the one we'd named "Imfene" which was based at the foot of the Magaliesberg Mountain. Neighboring farmers, legislation that seeks to persecute these species, widespread negative misconceptions about their behaviour and status as "problem" animals in relation to the humans who have robbed them of their natural habitat and the right to live freely, and the chronic consequences of loving non-human animals that face death on a daily basis were a few of the factors that caused me to turn away <b>...</b>
