Setting up a Network Connection in Linux (Backtrack)
This tutorial demonstrates how to configure a network connection in Linux (Backtrack specifically). Normally a network connection can be automatically established and configured but in some situations this isn't the case. In such instances, an IP, Gateway, Subnet Mask, and DNS must be assigned the the network adapter. This tutorial will also show how to configure a wireless adapter to connect to a desired network. - Commands Used: ifconfig (Shows a listing of recognized network interfaces on the system) sudo ifconfig [INTERFACE] up (Enables the specified network interface) sudo ifconfig [INTERFACE] [IP ADDRESS] netmask [SUBNET MASK] (Assigns an IP Address to the network interface. A LAN IP should begin with 192.168.xxx.xxx [EX: 192.168.0.112]. Netmask will assign a subnet mask to the interface as well which is normally 255.255.255.0) sudo iwconfig [INTERFACE] mode managed (Sets the interface to managed mode) sudo iwconfig [INTERFACE] essid [NAME OF NETWORK] key [ENCRYPTION KEY] (Connects you to the specified secure network) sudo route add default gateway [GATEWAY IP ADDRESS] (Assigns the default gateway to the interface. This will be the IP Address of your router which varies from model to model. Bushnell Backtrack GPS Review
In this video I review the Bushnell Backtrack GPS Personal Location Finder. The Bushnell device combines GPS with a digital compass to help you navigate back to a spot you have been to before (such as your house, where you parked your car, etc). The unit can store up to 3 "waypoints". I provide a brief explanation of the unit and then provide a field test. Note, this unit does not utilize maps and requires no subscriptions. Hence, it is reasonably inexpensive (roughly $50). My field test indicates that although there are some faults, they can be usually be overcome, providing a useful tool when hiking. I have absolutely no connection with the manufacturer and merely wish to provide an unbiased review of the product. If you use this product (or similar products) be forewarned that they can fail - you should not rely on them solely, especially if you are orienteering. Be prudent and exercise caution. Also, my explanation of how the unit works is based purely on some experience with robots and is an educated guess - I have not found any good documentation. QSTARZ and IDC (Ecco) appear to provide similar devices. I have not tested them. I would love to hear from anyone who has done a comparison.

This video is a quick look at the Backtrack 5 operating system with the Gnome desktop. The operating system is based on the Ubuntu 10.04 distro and has a few changes from the previous release. The boot menu gives you an option for Stealth mode to boot the OS without the networking services running. With that change, the default boot option does have networking turned on by default now.
