William Walton - Bagatelle for Guitar No. 2 performed by Julian Bream

This nice piece is from Julian Bream's "My Life in Music" DVD Before playing this piece Julian Bream tells the following: "As I began to get more and more interested in the piano repertoire of Debussy, Beethoven, Mozart, Bach and so forth. I began to feel that the guitar repertoire was lacking a lot of variety, not only variety but quality, and so it was really the influence of the piano that changed my way of interpreting music on the guitar to some extent and very much so to trying to forge ahead with a notion that, at least in this country, there was a possibility of creating new music for the guitar that had no Spanish base or influence.

Gerald Finzi - Five Bagatelles (HD Version)

I continue to explore Finzi's musical orchards! Finally got this HD version uploaded! Immersed as most of us are in the crazy turmoil of noise and perpetual bad news, take heart! "Deep roots are not reached by the frost" - JRR Tolkien. Here are three of Gerald Finzi's Five Bagatelles, composed originally for clarinet and piano duo - arranged here by Lawrence Ashmore. The three inner bagatelles are represented, in the following order: II Romance III Carol IV Forlana The images here are of England's Peak District in Derbyshire, which I took at Christmas 2008 and 2009. Great Longstone's 13th century church features in this clip, as does the Jacobean Tissington Hall and the Norman chancel arch of the church of St. Mary at Tissington. Elisabeth Lutyens Five Bagatelles

Daughter of the famous architect Sir Edwin Lutyens, Elisabeth Lutyens used her own method of serial (12-tone) composition to create individual, psychologically powerful music. Determined to be a composer from the age of 9, Elisabeth Lutyens went to Paris in 1922 to study at the Ècole Normale de Musique in Paris. On her return to London, she studied composition and the viola at the Royal College of Music from 1926-30. Critical of the "overblown" music of Mahler, Bruckner and Elgar, she collaborated with fellow RCM students Iris Lemare and Anne MacNaughton to mount a series of modern music concerts which featured first performances by new composers such as Benjamin Britten, Alan Rawsthorne and Elizabeth Maconchy. Some of Lutyens' own works were also performed, but she withdrew these later because they were "too conservative". In 1933, Lutyens married the singer Ian Glennie, by whom she had 3 children, but in 1938 she left Glennie for the conductor, Edward Clark. For much of this period, Lutyens had been working in near isolation, since her music had little affinity with prevailing trends in Britain. For example, her Concerto for Nine Instruments (1939) employed a 14-note series which she had worked out for herself. These and other pieces have been described as "extraordinary achievements, demonstrating a completely personal serial style and very original structures". However, at that time her work was not looked on favourably by the musical authorities at the BBC, although <b>...</b>

Under the influence of Jean Cocteau and Eric Satie, they achieved notoriety for their advanced ideas. Honegger and Auric were prolific writers of screen music, mainly for the French cinema. In a forty-year film career, Auric composed well over a hundred French film scores and in the latter part of his career scored a succession of big-budget, pan-European co-productions aimed, presumably at the American market. ~ Rob Barnett

Anton Webern - Six Bagatelles for String Quartet

Six Bagatelles for String Quartet, op. 9 (1913) I. Mäβig II. Leicht bewegt III. Ziemlich flieβend IV. Sehr langsam V. Äuβerst langsam VI. Flieβend Juilliard String Quartet (Recorded in New York, February 27, 1970) These tiny, perfectly-proportioned masterpieces (lasting just over three minutes in all) are a milestone in Weber's career -- and, indeed, in the history of Western music: here, for the first time, each single note becomes a complete entity, so that there is no one sound which can be removed from the texture without destroying the sense of the whole. In spite of the tempo fluctuations which can mark the ends of musical sentences, and of the irregular groupings (into two, three, four and five) within each beat, the underlying pulse of the music is clearly present as a fluttering inner urgency -- which occasionally rises to the surface in throbbing repetitions.

Schnabel plays Beethoven Six Bagatelles op.126 (I)

Six Bagatelles, op.126, composed in 1824, dedicated to his brother Johann van Beethoven, published in 1825; recorded in January 1937. PART I : - No.1 in G major, Andante con moto - No.2 in G minor, Allegro - No.3 in E flat major, Andante PART II : www.youtube.com - No.4 in B minor, Presto - No.5 in G major, Quasi allegretto - No.6 in E flat major, Presto - Andante amabile e con moto ~~~ There are three sets of Bagatelles for piano by Beethoven: the seven in op.33 (1801-1802), the 11 in op.119 (1820-1822), and the six in op.126 (1824) together with the three scattered Bagatelles without opus numbers from his early years. Many of the works in the three sets have roots predating the years specified, some of the earlier ones actually traceable to 1783. Still, Beethoven reworked his material before publication, and thus the Bagatelles in the last two sets can be called products of the composer's final period. Six Bagatelles in his op.126, unlike the previous ones having a light character and often less important keyboard works, offers the listener a more substantial artistic yield. The self-critical Beethoven himself expressed a favorable view of them in a letter to his publisher, stating they were likely the best of that genre he had yet composed. ~~~

Beethoven / Wilhelm Kempff, 1964: Bagatelles, Op. 126 - Complete DG Recording

In this 1964 recording, the late German pianist Wilhelm Kempff (1895-1991) performs the six Bagatelles, Op. 126, by Ludwig van Beethoven. I created this video from the LP depicted above, "Beethoven: Bagatelles - Wilhelm Kempff, Piano," issued in 1965 by Deutsche Grammophon, serial number 138934. So that there is no question in the mind of the listener, I rely principally on images of the LP label (3:43) and LP jacket (4:55) in order to document the authenticity of historically important recordings such as these. 1. Andante con moto 2. Allegro (3:02) 3. Andante (4:53) 4. Presto (7:12) 5. Quasi Allegretto (10:35) 6. Presto (11:58) Beethoven dedicated these works to his brother, Johann van Beethoven. They were published in 1825, just a couple of years before Beethoven died.
