Baghdad Vibrant but Still Dangerous, 8 Years After US Invasion

US foreign policy changed the moment Islamic terrorists attacked the United States on September 11, 2001, and then-President George W. Bush declared a global war on terror. Soon afterwards, US forces attacked terrorist strongholds in Afghanistan, but the Bush administration also considered Saddam Hussein's regime a threat and the US invaded Iraq in March 2003. Eight years later, the capital still bears the scars of war. Ayman Oghanna reports from Baghdad.

Multiple Iraq Blasts - Baghdad

co-ordinated bomb attacks in the Iraqi capital, Baghdad, has killed at least 63 people and injured around 185, say officials. blasts hit various locations, including al-Amil in the south and Halawi and Karrada closer to the centre. The bombings are the worst in months - and follow the withdrawal of US troops This is a whole rash of co-ordinated bomb attacks of the sort that we saw during the worst of the insurgency. One would assume that Sunni-based insurgents are behind it. The problem is the current extremely heated political climate. The vice president - Iraq's senior Sunni politician - is hiding out in Iraqi Kurdistan with a warrant on his head on charges of involvement in terrorism. A lot of Shias, including the prime minister, will no doubt conclude that this is his revenge - that he or people close to him will have unleashed this as revenge against the Shias and it Looks like a planning capability only available to al-Qaeda in Iraq, which is a mainly Sunni insurgent group. Four car-bombs and 10 improvised explosive devices (IEDs) were detonated,

Deadly Legacy - Iraq - August 2010

Seven years after the invasion of Baghdad, the Iraqi people are experiencing a devastating legacy. Babies are being born with severe deformities and cancer at a rate, which makes the effects of Hiroshima look tame. "Here look at her. So many things are wrong with her. It's all because of the fighting", says one stricken grandmother. The baby she clutches in a little pink towel has a cleft lip, a deformed arm, six fingers on one hand, and a kidney that bulges through her abdomen. Yet the doctors in this children's hospital in Baghdad are unfazed. "We see multiple cases like this", they say. Like all of the parents whose babies lie under the gravestones in the 'Childrens Graveyard', the doctors suspect that the cause may be the depleted uranium weapons used by US forces during the war. However they don't have the resources to provide much-needed data on what they describe as an "alarming increase". The Ministry of Health may refuse to comment on the problem due to suspected "pressure from the American Forces". Yet walking through the pock-marked centre of Baghdad wearing radioactive suits, workers from the Environment Ministry let the readings speak for themselves. Their clean-up may be ongoing, but whilst the Ministry of Health keep their silence, parents living in the areas around Baghdad say they are "too scared" to have more children. SBS

Adding to a series of bombings in the Iraqi capital of Baghdad on Thursday, two more bombs exploded in the evening, according to Reuters news agency. Targeting mainly Shia areas, a wave of 12 bombings across Baghdad during the early hours of the morning killed at least 63 people and injured 176. No group has claimed responsibility for the attacks as yet. But, following the withdrawal of US troops, sectarian tensions, which could bring down the unity government, have already been under the spotlight. Al Jazeera's Omar al Saleh reports from Baghdad.

"The winds of change will not cease to blow. For decades, the people of the Arab world have seen tyrannies topple and democracies emerge in Europe, Asia and Africa," Mr. Ban said in his remarks to the League of Arab States Summit in Baghdad, Iraq. Muqtada al-Sadr's Mahdi Army parades in Baghdad's Sadr City: 'Victory Festival' after US withdrawal

The Mahdi Army, a militia formed in 2003 by Muqtada al-Sadr, went on parade in celebration of the withdrawal of US troops. In the "Sadr City" district of Baghdad, al-Sadr addressed the crowd via video link and congratulated his army for their "victory." The celebration was titled "Victory of Resistance and Liberation Festival," and comes as a formal event to mark the withdrawal of the US military from Iraq last December. Muqtada al-Sadr said, "America bet that the Iraqi people would receive it with flowers and that the young and the old would chant for it, but we bet that they would by targeted by bullets and stones, and this is exactly what had happened. The sounds of the weapons of the resistance deafened their ears and scared them, and they could not do anything to stop them, therefore they pulled out defeated and losers."

Iraq PM: Baghdad bomb meant to kill me

Iraq's prime minister has said an explosion inside Baghdad's heavily fortified Green Zone earlier this week was an assassination attempt. Nouri al-Maliki said that initial intelligence on the bomb that exploded opposite the parliament buildings on Monday suggested he was the target. However, he denied that the explosion signaled a deterioration in security in the area, which is meant to be one of the most secure in Iraq. "The preliminary intelligence information says that the car was due to enter parliament and stay there and not to explode. It was supposed to explode on the day I entered parliament," he told the Associated Press news agency on Saturday. Al Jazeera's Jane Arraf reports from Baghdad.

September sees 110 die in violence? To see more go to www.youtube.com Follow us on Facebook (goo.gl or Twitter (www.twitter.com Ten years after the beginning of American payback following 911 Iraq looks back with confusion. They had no truck with Al Qaeda but today their country is ruined, one repressive regime gone and another in its place. Just a few brief encounters with the real people in Baghdad illustrates that this fledgling democracy has failed to achieve any substantial development. In fact, it's dubious whether democracy has bettered life at all, as factions and political parties follow their own violent agendas. "The significant capital is with the militias, who establish civil organisations that cause destruction: they build organisations that destroy." Yet a few resolute citizens remain confident that change will ensue: "there is a space for democracy, it might be small but it is being established". Dozens dead in Baghdad blasts

www.euronews.net A series of explosions has rocked the Iraqi capital Baghdad. Around 60 people are dead and more than 180 reported injured. Apparently coordinated attacks in up to 18 separate locations have brought carnage, four days after the last US soldiers left Iraqi soil. Surrounded by debris, one woman in western Baghdad, who identified herself as Um Hanin, said: "The baby was sleeping. Shards of glass fell on our heads. Her father carried her out. She is now scared in the next room. Why don't we have security and stability in this country?"

It belongs to a series of 3 pieces written the same year and that I dedicated to the children of the war in Iraq. I recorded the two others, Leila and Leila's Tears, in 2007 and 2008. I don't know why I did'nt finish the job with this one. Probably because it's a bit more difficult to play;) Anyway! Now it's done and it's on the web available for everyone. 2005 was a difficult period for me and for reasons that I will not share here. But those three songs give an idea of my feelings at that time. Or when the guitar mirrors your soul... It's much better today ;)) Thank you for watching Frédéric
