Feather and Ball Bearing Dropped in Vacuum
We are all told at school that in a vacuum, all objects accelerate under gravity at the same rate, regardless of their mass, shape or size. This is something that I had never witnessed first hand. During the Apollo 15 mission, David Scott dropped a hammer and a feather on the moon to demonstrate that they would hit the ground simultaneously. The result of this demonstration looks rather strange though because of the low lunar gravity. It looks more like the hammer is falling abnormally slowly. I decided I wanted to witness this phenomenon first hand, so set up an experiment in the bell-jar vacuum rig. As space is limited in the bell-jar, I decided to use a steel ball bearing rather than a hammer. The feather was held in place with a relay and the ball bearing was held by an electromagnet. The two were powered from the same supply so that they could be de-energized, simultaneously dropping the feather and the ball bearing. The ball bearing weighs 67g and is 1 inch in diameter. The feather is less than 0.1g and does not register on my balance. It is 73mm long. I placed some crumpled up aluminium foil under the ball bearing to absorb the impact and prevent it from rolling or bouncing inside the bell-jar.

Neodymium Magnets Magnetic Ball Spins for over five minutes LOW FRICTION BEARING
This video illustrates the low friction from a magnetic connection. The powerful Neodymium Magnets are rated at 87-112 pounds of pull force. I have smashed my fingers 4 times. They are really dangerous. The balls are regular steel ball bearings and are NOT magnets. The smaller ones are 3/4 inch and the large ones are 2 inch x 2 pound steel ball bearings. They become magnetized when entering the magnetic field. The further away from the original magnetic field, the lower resistance the steel balls experience. There is an optimal distance based in the weight of the final ball. I am not sure what application this can be used for if any but it is quite amazing for a 5:37 hand spin.

Its been a good year or so since I last messed with my helis and I have since moved on to other projects. Since then, many of the vendors I used to buy from have ether gone out of business or just no longer stock the parts. But, because of all the positive comments I still receive (and are very thankful for) on this project I felt that it would be selfish of me to just abandon the community of those who still want to mod their PicooZ's. So after doing some searching, and sorting through the forums over at RCGroups (which is a GREAT forum to check out if you're into RC) Ive been able to track down a couple of places that still sell these parts: www.indoorflyer.co.uk - This store carries just about everything you need to mod your Picoo. The 90mAH LiPo's can be found here along with 1mm carbon fiber rod for the shaft and they even carry replacement tail props. www.homefly.com - Tracking down a source for 1x3x1mm ball bearings (that aren't sold in bulk) was kind of tricky but this store seems to carry them. I've never bought bearings from them so I cant personally vouch for them. Their bearings also seem to be a bit different from the ones Ive used in the past, and their price is a bit higher as well. The 1.0mm bore one priced for $5 seem to match the specs of <b>...</b>

This is a recording of an AR.Drone with brand new sealed ball bearings replacing the stock bronze bushings. Also is a recording of the stock bronze bushings. The audio was recorded with a very high quality microphone, in mono using a wide pick up pattern and maximum signal level to help you hear the difference. The ball bearing Drone is has a much less bassy lower end and is quieter. I think this is the mechanical aspect of the sound that the Drone generates and may show that the bronze bushings impart less accurate and efficient angular rotation causing more noise.

Oil-Free Turbojet using MiTi® Foil Bearings & Korlon Coating
A 134 Newton thrust class, 120000 rpm turbojet was redesigned to incorporate a high-temperature Korolon™ coated MiTi® air foil bearing aft of the turbine rotor and a compliantly mounted ball bearing forward of the centrifugal compressor—cold section. Two rotor-bearing system configurations were evaluated, one for operation above the bending critical speed and one for rigid rotor operation. Required characteristics for the MiTi® air foil bearing and generic ball bearing equipped with MiTi® compliant foil damper mount were determined through a series of design tradeoff studies evaluating critical speeds and system stability. Following the design studies, the necessary hardware was fabricated, the engine assembled and operation to full speed achieved. Engine speed, rotor vibrations, compressor discharge pressure, exhaust gas temperature, thrust and fuel consumption were all recorded for both a baseline fluid lubricated ball bearing supported engine and the new turbojet engine using the MiTi® hybrid foil bearing support system. Issues related to high-speed operation above the bending critical speed are identified and recommendations offered. Engine test data show that approximately 10% less fuel is consumed by the MiTi® hybrid foil bearing mount system than the baseline conventional design. It is also shown that the MiTi® foil bearing life was longer than the ball bearing life even though the MiTi® foil bearing operated in the exhaust gas stream at temperatures exceeding 800 <b>...</b>
