Experimental wiring of a standard incandescent light bulb connected in series with a small F15T12 15 watts fluorescent lamp to act as a ballast. The incandescent bulb regulates the current arriving to the fluorescent lamp preventing it from destruction, the same was a typical magnetic ballast would work. The best result for light output, heat, electrode use and optimal lamp lifespan is to use a 60 watts 120 volts incandescent bulb. Be careful not to overdrive your fluorescent lamp. You need a current of 0.5 amps for the tube to fire up. Watts / Volts = Amperes. In this case, 60 / 120 = 0.5 This is a nice little project for under 20 bucks if you want a mix of smooth incandescent and bright fluorescent light. Using a bulb also get rid of any hum or annoying buzz from a regular ballast. This can be great for bed light, desk lamp where the hum can be a nuisance, however it is not a efficient solution for economical application as the wattage loss is greater with an incandescent ballast than a magnetic type.

Here's one of the best treble boosters I've used - well, THE best I'd say. The "Trouble" control allows you to modify the bass amount (lower setting: full bass like a clean booster, higher setting: lesser and tighter bass like a classic treble booster). "Volume" controls the boost factor. Here, I use it with a Squier classic Vibe Telecaster (no mods - this guitar is great as it is!) and a Blackstar HT-5 head with 2x12" Celestion heritage G12M speakers. For recording, I used a Shure SM57 and a T-bone RB500. Of course, the tones are not exactly Gallagher, Gibbons or May - a Tele keeps sounding like a Tele! - but it's close enough to show the amazing amount of different great tones this pedal has on offer :-)

A San Diego Northern Railroad work train is seen dumping fresh ballast at various locations along the former Santa Fe San Diego Subdivision in North San Diego County, California. The train consists of four Amtrak Ballast Hoppers sandwiched by two Coaster locomotives, one of which is running long hood forward. First up we meet up with the train as it crosses Cassidy Street in Oceanside, CA. The lead unit is running long hood forward but that horn still mangages to sound excellent. The train pulled down to and stopped at CP Longboard just after Cassidy Street where it met Amtrak 577 before pulling onto Single track to begin dumping. I drove up to Longboard and picks up the action as the train dumps ballast across the Right of Way through the Buena Vista Lagoon and stops dumping just short of Carlsbad Village. The crew climbed aboard and I catch the train blast (horn, not speed) through the Village, then stop on the other side of town to begin dumping again. We leave the train as it dumps Ballast between signals 2292 and 2301 in Carlsbad, CA. The load was almost empty and the crew was almost dead on the law when I called it quits and made my way to work.

In my previous video of this ballast, I had it laying on the floor with pieces of wire running everywhere. Decided that this ballast needed a home and bought a fixture for it from True Value. The fixture is an American Fluorescent ST series strip light for one four foot F40T12 fluorescent lamp. Replaced the factory Radionics rapid start ballast with the Robertson preheat ballast. I cannibalized the starter and lamp sockets plus some wiring from a 2' F20T12 preheat strip for use in this fixture. Starter is a metal canned FS-4 by Regent Lighting that I also got from True Value. Not shown was the 2' F20T12 preheat fixture I found on clearance for $3 at Lowes which I took the sockets and wiring from. I choose the American Fluorescent brand fixtures on recommendation of DavidFromAE as they had a conveniently located knockout on the cover for the starter socket. Once again, I'm running a Sylvania Octron F32T8 fluorescent lamp meant for electronic rapid-start ballasts on this magnetic preheat ballast.

This is how I replace the ballast in a T8 fixture. You can convert a T12 to T8 as well. Fluorescent bulbs are very dangerous if you cut yourself with one so be careful. I am not an electrician, just a DIY person. Shut off the power so you don't electrocute yourself.

A quick walk through of our 88' Malibu Skier Ballast System. I ran out of flash space so it cut me off, but it gives you a pretty good idea of how the system works. 4 Tsunami 1200 GPH pumps that manage water in 3 ballast bags. The rear pumps fill/drain the 2 500lb V-drive side/rear bags. The front pumps fill and drain the bag under the closed bow. We rarely use the front bag (never for wakeboarding) as it reduces the boarding wake when any forward weight is added. All clear tubing is 1". The black entry line is 1 1/4". There is about 90 ft of 1"line and probably easily 100 hose clamps. :-) Fill time for the rear sacs is around 5 minutes. They drain a bit faster than that. The 1 1/4" one way valves do a great job of keeping the system primed.

I've wanted to do one for quite a while and been playing with ways to use threaded rods to do it. This is the second version, but first actual test as the first mockup rotated the threaded rod making it whip about and was discharded. This version rotates a gear that's been threaded on the inside and is held in place by a single ballbearing. It is pulling water up from a 8" deep sink through a silicon fuel hose.
