Sullivan Ballou Letter
This video is the result of an assignment for a Teaching & Learning class that I took in the Spring of 2007 about incorporating technology into the classroom. The pictures used come primarily from the National Archives website and the music and letter are from "The Civil War: A film by Ken Burns." I decided to leave the video up because so many people seemed to enjoy it. Feel free to engage in discussion with other users in the comments section but please keep the tone civil. Also, comments telling me to "remove the intro" will be ignored/removed. This was a school project, not an official presentation, not something really meant to be seen by anyone outside of the class, and as such I have lost the original video a loooong time ago. For the most part I agree that it's unnecessary but it was required in the project. If you don't like it, you are welcome to watch something else. XD ALSO. I'm a woman. Stop calling me a "he". XD

Members of the Ballou Senior High School Marching Band rise above their violence-filled Washington, DC, neighborhood in this documentary, which follows the group as they try to achieve their dream of winning the national marching band competition. Inspired by their tireless director, Darrell Watson, and helped by a dedicated team of volunteers, the musical teens put their heads, hearts and souls into making the band the best it can be.

Mike Ballou has been a presence and activist within the Williamsburg art scene for decades. Founding 4 Walls Project Space with Adam Simon and Michele Araujo in 1991, he's contributed to the formation and progressive nature of the Williamsburg community. Beginning with a performance in 1996, Ballou has crafted a series of animal heads, some wearable some not, and later, made table-top sculptures assembled from parts of animal toys. This is his first presentation of these works in several years. Includes a tour and discussion with the artist Mike Ballou.

Ballou Senior High School is located in South East Washington, DC An inner-city school from which only five percent of graduates go on to attend college, Ballou has a secret weapon in the form of bandleader Darrell Watson - a respected educator and highly valued member of the community. Along with his all-volunteer staff, Watson strives to provide his students with opportunities that might otherwise pass them by. In addition to giving them the tools needed to learn, he also teaches them important lessons that will help them succeed in life. Now, as the band makes their way towards the competition in Birmingham, AL, Watson's students discover just how far a little hard work can truly take them.

Of the several good spoken presentations of this eloquent and timeless letter, this is my favorite. Clancy displays just the right intensity and intimacy necessary to convey Ballou's faith, love for his country, and love for his wife and sons. We have no knowledge that Ballou was of Irish extraction (although his given name does hint at a maternal Hibernian link) but Liam Clancy's brogue in no way detracts from this ardent American artifact. Near the start of the American Civil War, Sullivan Ballou pens a letter to his wife Sarah. This famous piece of historical correspondence is brought to life through the talents of actors' Kevin Rahm and Stephanie Foster-Breinholt. Several real-life Civil War reanactors were also enlisted to lend credibility and historical authenticity to the film.
