Rebuilding Bamiyan - 23 Jul 07 - Part 1

In 2001 the Taliban swept through Afghanistan's Bamiyan Valley. Their target was the colossal stone Buddha statues which had stood for over 1500 years. The world watched powerless as one of its true wonders was lost. In Rebuilding Bamiyan Al Jazeera's Nadene Ghouri travels to Bamiyan to explore the restoration work being done on the site, and to talk to those planning to rebuild the statues.

Bamiyan Cultural Heritage demining project-UNESCO/UNMACA

In 2008 a project initiated by cooperation of UNESCO and UNMACCA in order to do de-mining of Cultural properties of Bamiyan, Afghanistan. Many groups, local and international people were involved in this project and here is good to appreciate all their effort and remember people who lost their life or parts of body during this project. This project in 2008 started with the supervisory of Sorna Khakzad as consultant to UNESCO in the filed, the head of the project was Brendan Cassar (UNESCO). The project ended in 2009 and now the cultural heritage site of Bamiyan is safe for visit for tourists, for study and conservation. Hopefully through this effort the remains of this historic place will be transferred to the future generation.

Afghanistan Taliban Muslims destroying Bamiyan Buddha Statues

Read More: sinhalabuddhist.com The main Buddha in the Bamiyan valley, 240 kilometers northwest of the Afghan capital Kabul, before total destruction by the Taliban. The 53 meter Buddha was the largest statue in the world. With its strategic location at the intersection of roads to Persia, India, Tarim basin, and China, it developed an art style with a fusion of Iranian, Indian, Gandharan and local style into an independent mode of its own. This style of Buddhist art traveled eastward and was quickly adopted at Kizil, Xinjiang and ultimately Dunhuang. Buddhism reached the height of its power in the 8th and 9th centuries in Afghanistan before it fell to the Arabs.

BAMIYAN KABUL AFGHANISTAN 1975

DON departed for a five month overland trip with Exodus Expeditions in a Bedford truck to teach abroad in Sept., 1975. Don visited Istanbul and enjoyed the Blue Mosque, Santa Sophia and the Tokapi Palace and the gold and silver bazaar at Hasht Behesht Esfahan, Iran. Don traveled through northern Afghanistan to Mazar-e-Sharif, Bamiyon and Kabul. Don went trekking for a week in Nepal in November, 1975. Sherpa's carried his pack, erected his tent, and awoke him with coffee and breakfast in the morning. A plentiful supply of chung, a local corn beer added spice to the trekking up and down steep hills. Don spent a month in India around Christmas, 1975.« Don traveled through northern Afghanistan to Mazar-i-Sharif, Bamiyan and Kabul in Nov., 1975, on his way from Canada to Australia. Bamian is first mentioned in 5th Century AD Chinese sources and was visited by the Chinese travelers Fa-hsien around 400 AD and Hsüan-tsang in 630 AD; it was by that time a centre of commerce and of the Buddhist religion. Two great figures of Buddha there date from this period; the larger is 53 m high and the smaller is 120 feet. These statues are carved from the living rock and are finished with fine plaster. When Hsüan-tsang saw the figures, they were decorated with gold and fine jewels. The two Buddha figures, together with numerous ancient man-made caves in the cliffs north of the town, have made Bamian a major Afghan archaeological site. The caves are of various forms, and the interiors of many ...

Bamiyan Buddha Peace Light up amidst 92000 Orwellian blips .wmv

We thank our friends from America and Palestine who join us in this Bamiyan Buddha Peace Light-up video, while we live in the midst of the 92000 Wikileaks representing just the tip of our inhumane fire-berg. www.youtube.com The Afghan Youth Peace Volunteers ask that you would join them for a daily one-hour vigil over 6-days ( from Saturday the 31st of July 2010 to Thursday the 5th of August 2010 ), to ask the leaders of the world, "Why not love?" The state of Afghanistan is fatally un-sustainable. Morality, intellectualism and democracy are dying in Afghanistan. Humanity is dying. Everything needs to change but since we can only change ourselves, doing small things like keeping this vigil is what we the 'nobodies' of the world must do. 15 year old Abdulai says, "We usually feel alone. I think that my country is on fire and that we are all withering on the inside. We wish for your friendship in this vigil to put out the fire, for only a resolute love can give us some hope. I pray you would believe that we need that hope right now." Love and peace, Abdulai, Hakim and the Afghan Youth Peace Volunteers

Statue of Buddha in Bamiyan recreated by Indian artist

Indian artist Raghuveer Panwar has recreated the historic statue of Bamiyan Buddha in Dehradun. The original statue was in Afghanistan, which was being destroyed by terrorist regim of Taliban in 2001 in Afghanistan. The replica has been made with great care by Panwar, who had worked at Bamiyan for nine years, after a detailed study from various photographs of the statue. The replica made by him has become quite famous with locals and tourists thronging his place.
