On Monday, May 24, The Recording Academy Chicago Chapter and GRAMMY U spent the late afternoon with English indie-rock sensation Mumford & Sons at Lincoln Hall in Chicago. Ted Dwane, Ben Lovett, Marcus Mumford and Country Winston were greeted by students cheers and camera flashes as they walked onstage for their sound check. After each band member tuned their instruments and played a few acoustic songs, they glanced into the balcony as Mumford personally welcomed us to the rehearsal. The bands run-through of their larger than life anthems continued with a full band rendition of "Little Lion Man," a choice that clearly pleased the students as many sang along with its booming chorus. Once satisfied with their sound, the band headed up to the balcony for a Q&A with the students.

The rock era saw a few white female singers, like Janis Joplin, show they could sing the blues. But one who could outshine them all -- Jo Ann Kelly -- seemed to slip through the cracks, mostly because she favored the acoustic, Delta style rather than rocking out with a heavy band behind her. But with a huge voice, and a strong guitar style influenced by Memphis Minnie and Charley Patton, she was the queen. Born January 5, 1944, Kelly and her older brother Dave were both taken by the blues, and born at the right time to take advantage of a young British blues scene in the early '60s. By 1964 she was playing in clubs, including the Star in Croydon, and had made her first limited-edition record with future Groundhogs guitarist Tony McPhee. She expanded to play folk and blues clubs all over Britain, generally solo, but occasionally with other artists, bringing together artists like Bessie Smith and Sister Rosetta Tharpe into her own music. After the first National Blues Federation Convention in 1968 her career seemed ready to take flight. This is my very first music video (as a director and in general) and also my very first upload on YouTube (so please give it a rating!!!). The melody of this song by the German band mother nature's crime ( www.myspace.com ) to me immediately evoked images of nature, running water and summer. I incorporated some images suggested by the lyrics and worked closely with the band to find a concept we all could agree upon. (Originally there was a second idea that would have concentrated on reflections and the mirror-motif, but we decided against it, mostly for practical reasons.) The video was shot in two days in October 2008 in Berlin, Germany using only an SD camcorder (Panasonic GV 180 - 3Chip), a wooden tripod and a gold reflector. I did the camera work and the two original (and, at that time, only) members of the band "star". I edited it using Adobe Premiere and only tweaked the colors a little. The band and I met at certain stages of the editing and I incorporated their wishes, much to the benefit of the finished product. I think the video would have benefited from some additional footage to increase the pace at times, but generally I am especially happy with how well it works with the rhythm of the music.
