Baryshnikov performs Albrechts' variation from act II of Giselle in 1977.

Nikolai Rochenko (Baryshnikov) is a Russian ballet dancer who 8 years earlier had defected to the West. He is in a plane flying over Russia when a malfunction forces the plane to land in Russia where the authorities hold him. Galina Ivanova (Helen Mirren) is in cahoots with the KGB to convince Rochenko to stay in the country and take up his former position as a celebrated Russian dancer. In this scene she describes what his life could in Russia but Rochenko counters that he wants to be free and scream what he feels, like Vysotsky (the singer) does in his songs. She is overcome not only by recognizing the strength of Rochenkos argument but by the artistry and liberation of his dance.

Bob Hope brought Mickhail Baryshnikov to China to teach a class at the Peking Ballet School. Needless to say, he was a hit... Working with Mickhail Baryshnikov in China was a privilege and a thrill. He's a very nice guy and here's an interesting story for you from THE LAUGH MAKERS... Longing for a little more adventure, one afternoon Don, Gig and I slipped away from our guide for a couple of hours. In a narrow alley about a mile from the hotel, we discovered a small antique shop, obviously not intended for tourists. The musty interior was piled high with artifacts from estate-sales — rugs, furniture, household utensils, silverware, paintings, photos, lamps, vases, family stamps called chops made of marble or ivory and decorated with dragons, lions, monkeys and other characters from China's ancient mythology. More items made of ivory — chopsticks, statuary, and finely-carved jewelry. Up a narrow flight of stairs was the clothing — kimonos, men's suits, jackets, caps, sandals, shoes — all in a pile that said it hadn't been disturbed in years. Hanging on one wall of the dimly lit mezzanine, almost unnoticed, were old costumes retired from the Peking Opera — multicolored capes, pantaloons, garments weighted down with gold embroidery. Here was a treasure trove that foreigners weren't supposed to find! We felt like Sydney Greenstreet stumbling upon the Maltese Falcon. We made a few purchases and headed back to the hotel. That night over dinner, we mentioned our find to Mikhail ...

Mr. Mikhail Baryshnikov gave this interview exclusively during the Noorderzon Performing Arts Festival in Groningen, Netherlands. In this festival Mr. Baryshnikov is performing 'In Paris' a play from the Russian director Dmitry Krymov. It was a very special moment for me personally as Mr. Baryshnikov was my dancer idol which I have followed from the distance since when I was in the ballet school in Albania back in late '80. The first time I had the pleasure to watch him dance live on stage was only in 2009 when Mr. Baryshnikov danced with Ana Laguna in Amsterdam. The interview was filmed by dance2film (Altin & Mathieu) This interview was made possible by the arrangements of danspubliek.nl

This fascinating look at world of international ballet competitions features a young Mikhail Baryshnikov competing and winning in Moscow in 1969. The Moscow International Competition of Ballet Artists at the Bolshoi Theater attracts young dancers from around the world to compete for gold and silver medals, much like the Olympics. In this acclaimed film of the 1969 Competition, Baryshnikov performs an excerpt from La Bayadere and a solo from an original ballet by Leonid Jakobson entitled Vestris. Also featured in this historic documentary is a young Ludmila Semenyaka performing a scene from Act III of Giselle as well as a modern jazz dance piece titled We. There is also a rare and remarkable film clip of the legendary Anna Pavlova in performance, the first such film ever to be seen on DVD. Judges for the Competition were in a veritable "who's who" of other Russian dance stars, including Galina Ulanova, Maya Plisetskaya and Yuri Grigorovich. Also on the jury were Soviet composer Aram Khachaturian and dancers Agnes DeMille and Alicia Alonso. Highlight of the film include excerpts from Swan Lake, War and Peace, Spartacus and Le Corsaire. For a look at Baryshnikov at the beginning of his glorious career and at the heartbreak and joy of young dancers trying to make their mark, this behind-the-scenes program is a must have for every dance lovers DVD collection.
