Haydn composed this trio to celebrate the birthday of his employer, Prince Nikolaus Esterházy, who was a passionate baryton player. The prince commissioned 126 baryton trios from Haydn. Valkkoog is a small village in the Netherlands. Its population is approximately 150. Valkkoog is 15 km to the north of Alkmaar, and 60 km north of Amsterdam.The video was recorded in the village church (www.kerkjevalkkoog.nl). Henk van Eldik (Videofilmclub Schagen) edited this video. Paulina and Jacek are students at the Royal Conservatoire in The Hague. They are not regular members of Baryton Trio Valkkoog, but they volunteered to participate in the making of the present videos. Their instruments are a baroque viola and a baroque violoncello.

Late Jörg Eggebrecht performs Haydn's Divertimento No. 113 in D major (last part) on the rare baryton instrument, supported by the other "Munich Baryton Trio" players. From Wikipedia: "The baryton is a bowed string instrument in the viol family, in regular use in Europe up until the end of the 18th century. It most likely fell out of favor due to its immense difficulty to play. Its size is comparable to that of a violoncello; it has seven or sometimes six bowed strings of gut, plus from nine to twenty-four sympathetic wire strings (most often twelve). The gut strings are bowed while the wire strings are plucked by the thumb of the performer in order to create a contrasting tonal quality."

Burgksteiner Divertimento for Baryton Trio in D, no 24
Burgksteiner's Baryton Trio no. 24, written for Prince Nikolaus Esterhazy, played by the Haydn Baryton Trio of Budapest as part of the 2009 'Indian Summer in Levoca' Festival, in the Music Room of the Dardanely Summerhouse of Markusovce chateau, Slovakia. Three movements: Andante, Menuett and Finale (Allegro).The concert was made possible by the support of the Cultural Institute of the Republic of Hungary in Bratislava.

The instrument is not already completely and perfectly tuned, but as a rare document, we decided to upload it and share with everybody.
