Jean-Michel Basquiat (1960-1988) (excerpt)

Excerpt of ART/new york program no. 30A: JEAN-MICHEL BASQUIAT: An Interview, available for purchase at www.artnewyork.org/store. On this program we see a rare interview with the mercurial painter, Jean-Michel Basquiat, conducted in 1981 in his studio on Crosby Street, in SOHO. Basquiat, an internationally renowned artist as well as the enfant terrible of the 1980's art scene, died tragically in 1988 at the age of 28. Both during his brief life and since his untimely death, stories and legends abound which chronicle his meteoric rise to art world stardom. In 1996 Basquiat's life was fictionalized in the film entitled BASQUIAT, directed by fellow artist Julian Schnabel. On this ART/new york program, the 21 year old Basquiat is interviewed by art historian - curator Marc H. Miller, PhD. Already a well known art world figure, Basquiat's fondness for high jinks as well as his exuberant spirit are captured as he describes his working process and comments upon his art world persona. 34 mins.

Basquiat is a 1996 film directed by Julian Schnabel which is based on the life of American postmodernist/neo expressionist artist Jean-Michel Basquiat. Basquiat, born in Brooklyn, used his graffiti roots as a foundation to create collage-style paintings on canvas. Jeffrey Wright portrays Basquiat, and David Bowie plays Basquiat's friend and mentor Andy Warhol. Additional cast include Gary Oldman as a thinly disguised Schnabel, Michael Wincott as the poet and art critic Rene Ricard; Dennis Hopper as Bruno Bischofberger; Claire Forlani, Courtney Love and Benicio del Toro in supporting roles as "composite characters". The film was written by Schnabel while Lech J. Majewski and John F. Bowe each receives a story credit and Michael Thomas Holman receives a story development credit. As director, Schnabel is often found painting himself into the film by adding the fictional stand-in character, Albert Milo (Gary Oldman), based on Schnabel. Schnabel also leaves a bit more of himself in the film by adding cameo appearances by his own mother, father, and daughter (as Milo's family.) Schnabel himself is an extra as a waiter. Basquiat died in 1988, of mixed-drug toxicity (he had been combining cocaine and heroin, known as "speedballing"). Basquiat's estate would not grant permission for his work to be used in the film. Schnabel himself did the accurate reproductions of Basquiat's work . Jeffrey Wright as Jean-Michel Basquiat David Bowie as Andy Warhol Gary Oldman as Albert Milo ...

Jean-Michel Basquiat: The Radiant Child - Trailer

Now Available on iTunes: www.newvideo.com and DVD: www.newvideo.com In his short career, Jean-Michel Basquiat was a phenomenon. He became notorious for his graffiti art under the moniker Samo in the late 1970s on the Lower East Side scene, sold his first painting to Deborah Harry for $200 and became best friends with Andy Warhol. Appreciated by both the art cognoscenti and the public, Basquiat was launched into international stardom. However, soon his cult status began to override the art that had made him famous in the first place.

Three from Chelsea Sall, Richter, and Warhol Basquiat

James Kalm is out and about again bringing viewers a popuri of recent exhibitions. "Solid Liquid" Eric Sall's latest group of paintings at ATM draws viewers in with their rich use of paint, luscious color and sophisticated abstract compositions. Daniel Richter is yet another of the wild young German painters showing with David Zwirner who have picked up the mantel of bold large scale painting. Fluctuating between figuration and abstraction, Richter employs jarring colors and spontaneous techniques to fashion his disturbing images. In the mid eighties, as Warhol's star was diminishing and Basquiat's was rising, their paths crossed. Van de Weghe Fine Art presents a show spotlighting this short and unique collaborative project, as they produced some of the decade's most striking paintings.

Polar opposites such as life and death and good and evil show how we often categorise phenomena in pairs, with each element representing the antithesis of eachother. Throughout its history, maharishi has played with dualities by mixing East and West, military and peace, high-visibility and camouflage, nature and technology.

GRITtv: Tamra Davis on Jean-Michel Basquiat: Remembering the Art

In the 80s, before she directed Hollywood comedies like Half Baked and Billy Madison, Tamra Davis shot hours of footage of her friend Jean-Michel Basquiat. The young artist went on to international stardom before dying of a heroin overdose at age 27, and Davis went on to Hollywood. Here, she reminds us to remember the man, and more importantly the art, behind the celebrity. Distributed by Tubemogul.
